Can those who play the wifi vs. mode explain how lag effects the game? Is it bad or hardly noticeable? How about east coast vs. west coast? Noticeable? or not? If it is, do both parties get the same amount of lag or just one person?
I went through 12 wifi races last night with some folks on the Penny Arcade forums (I'm in Minnesota, they were in Canada, California, New Jersey, and who knows where else) and I raced against a few friends, one in Florida and the other in Texas.
I saw no lag at all. I mean, NO LAG AT ALL. Yeah, there's only 4 to a race, but you can tell Nintendo restricted this because they wanted lag to be virtually nonexistant.
I would imagine the only complaint would be the time it takes to connect a game. When I was racing with my friends, it took no time as we were on the phone and said, "Okay let's connect" and did so simultaneously. With the PA'ers, it took anywhere from 2-5 minutes for the friend finder to do it's thing and find me 3 warm bodies. I got spanked, but hey, I'm learning.
Anyone who bitches about lag in Mario Kart DS wifi play is simply looking for a nit to pick. My only complaint thus far is that this game is crippling my hands. I've played mostly stylus games on my DS up until now, and this game is difficult for me simply because the controls are killing my hands. After an hour of racing I have to take a break or I'll cramp up huge. I don't know how people manage.
If this game were ported over to the GameCube to the comfy GC controller, it would easily be my pick for best MK ever. Serious. As is with the cramped DS controls, it's hard to say who's the best.
