Mario Kart DS
No it doesn't use the rumble pack. I've left it plugged in, and it does nothing.

Oh, and I didn't find the battery life that bad. I've only had a couple hours shaved off of what I normally get...
Like I said, I didn't fully charge my DS back up so it could have been that. I have read on other message boards that there is a big drop in battery life which is to be expected.
Has anyone noticed how much playing online drains the battery? I charged my DS last night (although not fully), and played some single player since WFC was having problems. Today I connected to WFC to check on my friends list (no actual playing) and then played 2 GPs online and my DS literally powered itself off (luckily after the matches were over). I knew wifi would drain the battery but holy cow!

I'm at my in-laws and I didn't bring the DS charger. What is really sad is that I'm actually thinking about running to the closest EB and buying one so I can play again later today.

On a related note, if I bought an extra DS battery, is there a way to charge the battery without it being in the DS?
Yea, on the other forums a lot of guys are getting about 4 hours of play on a full charge, that is, if they are playing Wi-Fi non-stop.

Just make sure to bring that charger with you all the time and use it to play. When it's not convenient, then you can go portable.

Doing that right now actually ;).

Man, I see a friend is online but this thing has been trying to connect for like 5 mins!

DMK, Nice game.

Maybe we should start a competition thread? That way we can say 'Hey im on, lets play' rather then cluttering this one up?

Frelling Amazon hasn't even shipped my copy out yet. I Would have never ordered from them if I didn't have Amazon Gift Cards to burn.

Damn

MarioKart states in several places that the cartridge is essentially "married" to the DS that you first use it on. Has anyone tested this to see what happens when it's put into another DS? Is your Friend Code entirely re-generated as a different number?
Hey, do you guys know if it's in Walmart or Target stores yet?
I got it at WalMart on Monday.

I think it's an individual race stat rather than match... that being so, I'm not sure if only 1st gets a win or 1st & 2nd... it is somewhat confusing.

No need to ask in all three threads ;) Anyways, what I've gathered is that you get a win for each person you beat, and a loss for each person that beats you.

Example: In a 4 player race, if you get 2nd, you will get 2 wins and 1 loss.

Edit: To clarify, this is over the whole 4 race circuit. I still haven't figured out how it hands out wins if some of the opponents quit, but I'm guessing that you only get as many wins/losses as there are people who finish the circuit.

Supposedly if someone quits, everyone else racing automatically gets credited with a win. The player who dropped gets a loss.

Key word supposedly unless they changed it recently. It wasn't working like that for me with all the disconnects I've been getting

I know. I'm skeptical as well but there are a lot of people on the Nintendowifi forums saying that's how it has been working. Almost all of the matches I have played have been 2 player matches so I rarely get drops.
I paid full price on this game, and I have no regrets. Totally happy and satisfied. Just wanted to share this.
Same, along with Meteos, Kirby, Castlevania, Trauma Center, Metroid Pinball, Jam with the Band. And probably Tony Hawk, Sonic and Viewtiful Joe in the near future...damn the DS rules..

I may not change my icon to this tonight, but here's an idea I had for the CAG branding:

it doesnt make any sense still, last night i was playing, i played a set of races with some guys, i won all 4 races, afterwords i only had 3 more wins in my stats... also my cable modem has been acting up so ive dropped several times, no extra losses, in fact i used to have 5 losses on my game, but now it says i only have 2, ive lost more than 2 and 5 times! i wish nintendo would explain it.

*shrugs* I wish they didn't have a rating system...or better yet, a hidden one you can never see, so that it can still do "Rivals" ok, but without people dropping to try and keep their high rank.

I've been having fun regardless, though so many people dropping after Wario owned them sorta bothered me a bit...

Just a note, if you do this, put the lettering into a darker color so it shows up. For mine I made the line dark green, and the text black. :)

Has anyone found a list online of the times to get in time trial to unlock the staff ghosts? I've only found the 3 courses listed on GameFAQs Cheats page.

Interesting. Evidently the item rating even plays into Time Trial mode. It affects how many mushrooms you start out with (1, 2, or 3).

ok, I'm gonna go see if I can fall back asleep now. ;)
So, since ROB is the ultimate unlockable, does he have badass stats or something?
no, hes just another character, but he has some cool karts
no, hes just another character, but he has some cool karts
Although his weight is just balanced enough that when you've got all the carts unlocked, he works well. My character/cart of choice is ROB in the Cucumber at this moment (almost the same handling as the Dry Bomber, but a full item bar to boot).

On another topic, I'm really enjoying the people that drop so they don't lose, yet get a loss anyway because they drop. Do they realize their record is 5 and 117? ;)

Good to see that I'm not the only one using the Cucumber for most of their races. I'd love to use ROB, but his added weight makes it harder to take off-road shortcuts, so I usually go with Dry Bones or another lightweight.

Dear Abby,

I figured it would happen now and then, but crap, all this connection dropping is starting to spoil the experience a little.

I red-shelled some mother fletcher twice in round two of a racing cycle and got the win, and he dropped before round 3 started. WTF? That's the luck of the draw in Mario Kart... I got my ass spinied in round 1 and lost and didn't drop out. You know why? Because I'm a grown-assed man!

Also had some assclown drop in race #1 after realizing that DK doesn't hustle down the tracks like the lightweights do, but so what? Being the first out of the gates seldom translates to being first to the finish line in this game. In fact, it's often best to be behind for the first two spins around the track.

Frickin' babies on this game. What's a guy to do?

Signed,

My sentiments exactly. People are so, so lame. Do you think they know that they get a loss anyway? I've taken all of my MANY losses like a man, even if I was cursing the heck out of my DS ;)

I make it a rule to A) not drop and B) if someone is getting rocked, always pick whatever track he wants to play. It's a Mario Kart Code of Honor, by which few abide.

That's a very good code... One which not many follow. I've had several people drop out on me whenever they're getting rocked. I for one have not dropped out of a race when I'm far behind. If I get 4th place in every race, then so be it. The only way to get better is to play people better than you anyway.

If I'm way ahead of somebody, I will try to make it interesting and stop power sliding. I don't know if I should do this though because how is the other guy going to learn where and when to power slide.

Right on! I never drop and try to be a team player on the course selections. Sometimes being a nice guy gets me totally ganked, but at least I can walk away from the debris with my head held high.

I follow this rule as well, with exceptions. One round of Rainbow Road or Sky Garden is quite enough, thank you (read my rant in another thread).

Interesting Joystiq article about sales of Mario Kart DS and the number of people going online.

http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000050069150/

C&P:

Whether it’s the crazy ad campaign, the innovative aspect of DS wifi play or the unusual locations of DS wifi access points, Nintendo seem to be doing something right.

In the last week they’ve sold over 110,000 copies of Mario Kart DS, and over 52,000—more than 45%—have been taken online. An interesting comparison is that Halo 2, arguably Xbox Live’s most dominant title, was only taken online by 18% of new owners even after three weeks on sale.
Nintendo have some more interesting titles around the corner, many of which include and benefit from wireless play, so time should tell whether this launch is an oddity or an indication of things to come.

The comparison to Halo 2's online numbers after launch is a little bit of apples to oranges since Halo 2 players have to subscribe to Xbox Live before they can play online. What the comparison might show is that offering free WiFi play encourages a lot more people to try out an online match.

Given that MK DS has a pretty bare bones interface and is missing a ton of features we would all like it to have (pre/post race chat, configurable race mode settings, a friends list that works, etc.), it will be interesting to see what the online numbers do over the coming weeks.

...its also a large difference between a portable and a home system. That being said, halo 2 sold i think 2.4 million copies in 24 hours...the comparisons are nice (Nintendo fanboy here), but dont really seem to work.

MK copies sold - 110,000
People online - 52,000

Halo 2 copies sold - 2,400,000
People Online - 432000

People who drop are probably just some punk-ass kids.

Got the game... it's fun, but I can't help that the selection of racers is a bit on the low side. I mean, I know there is people to unlock (four right?) but I still would have liked to have seen more racers.

Did you like Mario Kart 64? And how many racers were in that?

Hello wise ones, when you are doing the installation the first time for the game, there is a statement saying that the cartridge is now married to your DS.....what exactly does this mean? Can I not play my DS cart in another DS...go online on another DS? Anyone know definitively.

Its kinda like Phantasy star online for DC....except the online part is mainly about your ID # and connecting it to nintendowifi.com

You can still play it on another system, but it will make a different ID # (or not...im not sure on that yet)
Did you like Mario Kart 64? And how many racers were in that?
MK 64 was one of the few MK racers I've never played. I guess it's just weird seeing Diddy Kong and Koopa Troopa in a billion and one Mario games and now they are gone.

It will generate a different Friend Code for you. You'll have to inform your friends that you have a new one, or you'll no longer appear online for them.

Well I'm finally connected... played a few rounds... and man, do I SUCK!!! I'm not sure why, either... I've seen people with the same racer/kart as me, who aren't powersliding, yet they seem to be able to go a lot faster... am I missing something?

Maybe they're using the snake technique? I just read it on gamefaqs, apparently you powerslide back and forth on straight roads to get lots of speed.

They don't seem to be powersliding at all, though... it's strange. I'm not saying it as an excuse for my badness either ;D I really can't figure it out... I'm not running into to anything or doing anything that would stunt my speed in any way, so I'm not sure what it is...

Guess I just need to practice!
