The ESRB notes that the game is appropriate for older gamers, with an “M” rating for “Blood,” “Language,” “Partial Nudity,” “Sexual Themes,” and “Violence.” Given the sci-fi nature of the game, a lot of the combat (also responsible for that “violence” descriptor, thanks to the gunplay, and the magical abilities known as “biotics”) is against appropriately space age foes. The fighting is primarily against robotic creatures called the “Geth” but there’s a menagerie of aliens to battle too, plus some lumbering space zombies for good measure. The bloody moments are few and far between, but can come as quite a surprise when they occur. Of note is a close-up scene of a character being unexpectedly skewered through the chest by an alien creature while in the middle of a conversation. As you can imagine, it’s quite messy.
It’s notable that the descriptor for the language is not “strong” so you can be confident that more vulgar curse words are not featured at all in the dialogue. What you will hear are words like “b*****d,” “g****mn,” and “a**.” There’s a lot of “a**.”
The partial nudity and sexual themes come as a package deal connected to the romantic storyline that unfolds over the course of the game. Should the player choose to pursue it, and depending on a number of choices made throughout (including the sex of your main character) there are opportunities to explore either a heterosexual, or homosexual (just girls, not guys) relationship. Successful wooing of one of the possible targets eventually results in the hero sealing the deal towards the end of the game, with the two characters jumping in to bed together for a night of steamy passion before the big, final battle. While described as “the sex scene” by anyone that’s heard of it, what the player actually sees is little more than the naked hips of one of the female characters as she moves up the body of her lover. The scene then fades to black.
