Now i have never played a mass effect game ever only due to not having any time. I am thinking about picking one up off of craigslist for 40 dollars never open. Should i give this a try? Now the type of games i do enjoy and have completed are games like MW3, Fallout 3, dead island and oblivion. Any help would be great and thanks you very much.

If you enjoy/like the following, then yes:
Science-fiction
Epic story that spans the galaxy
Third person shooters
Having consequences to your actions
Having decisions/consequences carry through to sequels
If you enjoy all of these, then by all means, get it.
Also, something to note:
ME1 is technically inferior (I think it's the absolute worst game this generation, from a purely technical standpoint). When I say that, I mean it has frame rate issues, crashes, glitches, texture loading, and more up the ass. But, don't let this stop you from playing it. The interaction and story are excellent. They easily outweigh the many technical issues plaguing the game.
The best part is that it only gets better from there with ME2. My personal favorite, I find it to be the most balanced and well-rounded of the three. Excellent gameplay, graphics, sound, and now, with fewer bugs/glitches. The story is straightforward, but the real heart of the story lies with your squad.
As for ME3, well...you'll have to form your own opinion (I don't doubt you've heard quite a bit about the ending). Gameplay, graphics, and sound wise, it's quite excellent. Story wise? I'd say it's pretty good (aside from a VERY jarring shift in main antagonist) until the last 15 mins. The final 15 mins will probably piss you off, if you're invested in the story. Also, before playing ME3, download the Extended Cut. Do not play the ending without it.

Edge has it pretty good. My only comments to add are this:
-ME1's gameplay is the closest to RPG of the bunch (but with a good amount of shooter effects), ME2 is more streamlined shooter/RPG, and ME3 plays like COD or Gears. But considering the Mass Effect series is probably my favorite gaming series ever, its definitely worth getting!

Like others, one of my favorite series ever. And definitely my favorite of this generation.
As other's note, it's not really a RPG (especially the 2nd and 3rd). For me that's a plus as I like shooters more than RPG games and find this a great mix of Gears-esque shooter combat with powers mixed in, and a great RPG type story with great dialogue and user control of dialogue options etc.

40 bucks new is a decent price, that's what I paid for it. Dividing it up, 13 and change is slightly better than you're going to get paying for the separate games new, so I'd say go for it.

After failing to get more than an hour or two through the first and second one on about four different occasions over the years (I bought in day one in 2007), I am determined to play through and literally just restarted the first one again last night. All my previous failures were on the 360 but I ended up scoring a PS3 trilogy for next to nothing from a friend, so this time around I'm going that route.

It's well worth the time spent, and yes, there are some issues with the various games, though I think they're the best gaming I've had in the current console cycle.
There's DLC for each title out there, which are usually just side missions, just so you know what to look for:

Cerberus Network - provides access to additional weapons and some side missions, a must buy if not included in the box already
