While at Best Buy today, I noticed Datel's Max Media Dock on the shelf. It supposedly lets you play mp3's and videos through your DS, as well as "homebrew" games and executable files via a Compact Flash card. Question is, anyone own one? Is it worth picking up - and could it play emulators?

I've seen this thing at Walmart and Gamestop also. I'm still wishing there was an official MP3 player for my GBA to come over here in-store like this device! Does anyone know if I could just use a part of this device on my GBA or does it require both the DS's port and GBA port to run applications?

[quote name='itachiitachi']Its available for 19.99 here

They are sneaky as that one does not have the ds cart needed to run it on the ds. You have to buy the Max Media Loader for another $20, which is how it is bundled normally.

Saw it at Best Buy today for $40 so may just get it there as I have GC's and try the gamepro coupon on it. Just have to have a game as well. :)

From what I have read it needs both. Boots from DS port, but storage is in GBA port.

Please let us know your opinion of it... I, for one, am curious... esp about the homebrew aspect. Most flashcarts and such cost more than I care to pay.

Haven't broke down and bought it yet.
Bought memory for my new pc instead.

Still tempting tho.

I've found a view 'programs' that will run off the Dock that would make having it interesting. As far as my old school collection that is ;)

I bought one, but it didn't work. Turns out the Max Media Player software cart is only compatible with older firmware DS and DS Lite's. There's an update on the Datel site, but I couldn't get it to work. I'm selling it and getting an M3.

I have the media dock and used a 1 Gig flash card for the saves. Runs Homebrew,videos,mp3's and legal backups of games not that we can talk about that on these forums as that is prohibited. So yes I am really really hapy with mine plus it cost $10 at Wal-mart in Saint Petersburg Fl. Any questions give me a message and Iw ill see what I can do

Aren't R4s only $30 or thereabouts at dealextreme.com?

Yes. $44 with 1 Gig card.
Last I Checked anyway.

there are produts such as the supercard,m3,r4 that have many of the same functions. some more, some less. one large advantage this product has over others is that its widely available at local shops. Walmart, Circuit city and best buy to name a few.

if anything I mention is out of bounds please feel free to remove that part of post mod. no intentional offense meant.

the max media dock does many nice things.

From what I have read online there is supposed to be many things you can do with it but most will require a little work ( no one click does all progs)

1) you can get a comic book reader program ComicbookDs and read .cbr files on the ds. There are many free .cbr's online as well as iligitimate ones.

2) you can play mp3's with it.

3) you can play videos as well.

(there is a side program you can install called moonshell that created a customizable interface and is supposed to give you better video quality as well as sound.)

4) you are supposed to be able to play homebrews as well as most NES, SNES, GBC, GBA and some Genesis with the right software. The idea of a portable Nes and Snes is quite appealing as they never had full legit hand helds of those. well that I know of.

hope that info helps someone.

Again mods anything out of bounds please remove and again sorry.

For anything other than mp3s and videos I do not recommend this product. It'll work with homebrew, but it's not a fun experience. Only use this product if you need video and mp3 functionality on the cheap.

Video are DS resolution. (One screen, no border)
I compress anime episodes around 50-60MB each using BatchDPG and Reinmoon.

I just tried the ComicBookDS and it's pretty good. But once again it has no support for the MMD. Go to the patcher link and download the the patcher tool and the media dock (Compact Flash) patch. This FAT driver works with the MMD lite, MMD CF and MMD hard drive. The target to patch is ComicBookDS.nds NOT sc.nds or .gba.
