Maybe gas is not expensive enough...

The only thing that matters to the auto companies is money.

That new Hybrid Toyota Prius(45+ mpg) is selling like hot-cakes so expect everyone to jump on the bandwagon.

CNN did a report this weekend regarding the new energy plan that just made it through congress. According to the report 40% of our oil is consumed by automobiles. I'd be interested in knowing the source of that 20% figure you quoted.
