This weekend I watched "Rocky", twice.

I've watched rocky a hundred times as a kid, but I havent watched the movie in 10 years at least. I was blown away, all over again.

This movie is one of the greatest for several reasons, here's a few.

1. He didnt win at the end, it wasnt an overly cheesey "Win All" movie....he just went the distance with the champ. He proved he had what it took to be a contender....he proved he Was somebody.

2. He went the distance and won the girl. He was the "everyman" hero. He was a hero anyone could be...

3. There wasn't cusswords all over the movie, it was a movie that the thug from the street could sit next to a 8 year kid and they would both enjoy it. It was real, no showboating....no catchy slang or sex scenes to lure people in. It was just a great movie, that had a great moral and everyone was entertained... It was a "Classic" in every scense of the word.

4. Rocky wasnt a showboating prick, he wasnt trying to prove he was something by being agressive or thugish...He was a modest everyman, a nobody trying to take his shot.

Not like athletes today... Today, athletes have a government protected monopoly to make money from. That means, the government wont allow other MLBs and NBAs to pop up cause the government protects them. The Govt protects them to be our heroes, to be someone our kids could look up to....

But now, you get all these edgy Lebron James look-a-likes with no talent to back up they're showboating...and these guys arent heroes or someone are kids can look up to anymore. They beat they're wives and do drugs, they start fights with spectators, they close the gap in they're lack of abilities by illegally doing steroids. People say, "its always been like that", but no, no it hasnt. Its been like that for 15 years and we accept it now. I feel that if they're govt protected, the govt should keep they're asses in check. They obviously cant do it for themselves anymore, they're not worth the money we pay them thats for sure. I havent watched a baseball game since they striked...and I probably never will. And dont even get me started on the steroid use. Just $$$$ing rediculous.

5. Rocky wasnt the brightest, and he wasnt the best. But he saw an opportunity to be great and he took the risk. He took it seriously. Thats something that I cant see very many people do these days. It's just sad really.

This movie was a classic in everyway, if you havent seen it....go see it. If you have, take a relaxing sunday afternoon and watch it again. Maybe with your son...and show him what it takes to be a real man.

I miss the fact that it was ever like this, watching something like this almost makes me sick that we're the way we are now. We're all in the greatest country in the world, free to make a change and so many dont. And the people who do, are these weak, sad excuses for a man. Rocky had heart, the will to succeed and decency. I hope that one day, for our kids...that we will show them that you dont have to lower your standards or be less of a real man, to get a chance to be the champ.
Well put.

They sure don't make 'em like they used to.
That's bullshit. I'm not saying Rocky isn't a good movie, but there have been dozens of movies in recent history better than it. Don't fall into that nostalgia bullshit.

Never seen Rocky (please don't shoot), but I agree. I tend to watch older movies than ones that come out today. They rely on special effects in most cases, not great acting.

I don't think steroids is a problems in basketball, it isn't beneficial like it is in baseball. The fans are also becoming more of a problem, more aggressive and more violent. Though to make a blanket assumption that they all do drugs and beat their wives is ridiculous, more get caught because better testing (though cocaine and the like is much less than it used to be) and law enforcement (in terms of abuse). Ron Artest (the guy who charged the stands after a fan threw beer at him) got hit by his wife, his response? He called the police, grabbed his kids, walked outside and waited for the cops to arrive.

Great post, MookyJooky. I couldn't have put it any better. People say Stallone sucks at acting, but he has consistently done a great job in tons of movies, Rocky being his best. Granted he had some terrible ones, but who hasn't.

Whenever any Rocky is on, besides III, I instantly have to sit down and finish it. A couple years ago TBS aired Rocky I-V on Memorial Day straight through, man that sucked.

Rocky is a stellar flick, but I found the original post to be a tad preachy. Was your intent to start a discussion of the quality of the film or the quality of the world? Things change. Deal with it! 30 years from now people will be affectionatly talking about better times back in the beginning of the century. I don't disagree with your points, but I get a little tired of hearing how great the world was "back in the day."

You know, I really hate when people say that old movies are better than new ones.
Well, duh.

Take the collected works of nearly a hundred years, skim only the cream of the crop right off the top, and of course you'll have better movies on the average than those that came out in the last 5 years. Throw nostalgia into that and new movies don't have a chance.

It's not like thier weren't crappy movies back then either... but most of those are just forgotten or lost to time.

It seems a shitload of people missed the point.

I never said Rocky was the best movie ever made, or that it was better than anything out today. I just said that the movie was great.

For nostalga purposes it serves none for me, I was born in 1980.

I just saw some great things that it was able to do that I cant see a movie doing now and being able to not flop.

Rocky is a closet bright person wrapped in the persona of a person bordering retardation. The man is clearly slow...but the way he handled certain things were better than most of the brilliant people I know.

He gets this one in a million chance, and he never becomes the champ... but he goes the distance (which most people dont) and ends up not just the hero, but more along the lines of the "everyman hero".

Then the movie has the ability to capture anyone in the audience, giving everyone something they can relate to. As well as keeping it morally correct without being preachy and gritty without saying a cussword every five minutes. In a time period where I see so many forms of media relying on nothing more than gimmicky, trendy vocal acting and special effects...it was refreshing to see a movie that captured everything it needed to be a classic without needing to sell out to the time period.

And it did all this, while still being PG. Figure that.
