(CNN) -- Bail was set at $50,000 Friday night for a GOP campaign worker who made up a story about being attacked by a man angered by a John McCain bumper sticker on her car.

Police say Ashley Todd admitted making up the report that she was attacked because of a McCain sticker.

Ashley Todd, 20, of College Station, Texas, has been charged with filing a false police report, a misdemeanor, a police report said.

Woman [McCain supporter] Attacked At ATM, Assailant Carves Letter ["B"] Into Her Face
The Pittsburgh Channel ^| October 23, 2008

PITTSBURGH -- A 20-year-old woman who was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield was also maimed by her attacker, police said.
Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard tells Channel 4 Action News that the victim was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday night outside of a Citizens Bank near Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m.
Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim's car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter "B" into her face, Richard said.
Richard said the woman refused medical treatment after the assault, which happened outside the view of the bank's surveillance cameras. The robber is described as a dark-skinned black man, 6 feet 4 inches tall, 200 pounds with a medium build, short black hair and brown eyes. The man was wearing dark colored jeans, a black undershirt and black shoes.

Update VII: I spoke with two executives at the College Republicans on the record about this story. Charlie Smith, the National Chair, and Ethan Eilon, the Executive Director, both say the photo is legitimate and that it came from Ashley Todd, the victim in this case. The attack began at 8:50 pm ET and Ashley called the police at 9:30 PM ET. Initially, she was robbed, ran away after the robbery, and the robber followed her to her car. At that point, he became enraged at the bumper sticker and began beating her and scratched the ‘B’ into her face. Ashley went to the hospital early this morning after initially refusing medical attention last night, and had an MRI and/or a CAT scan. Doctors believe her cheek will heal fully.

Eilon spoke with her personally today about the incident and confirmed the above with me. He first met Ashley in June, when she came to DC for training with the College Republicans. She works for them as a contract employee. She does not work for the McCain campaign. Both Eilon and Smith expressed revulsion over an attack on a young woman just getting involved in politics, but they consider this the act of a lone lunatic.

Republican HQ Manager's Home Shot Up Over McCain Signs
Loval 6.com, Seminole County, FL ^| 23OCT2008 | Local 6

'Democrats Far More Aggressive in Seminole County,' Victim Says
LONGWOOD, Fla. -- The home of a Central Florida Republican headquarters manager was shot up and damaged over his support of Sen. John McCain, the man told police.
Rog Coverely said several pellets pierced his Longwood home. Coverely showed several spiderwebbed-holes in the front windows of his home.
The Republican manager said he is convinced he was targeted because of new McCain signs he added around his home.
"All I can tell you is this, I have a very good relationship with my neighbors," Coverely said. "I mow my lawn. The only thing that has changed is I have two McCain signs in my front yard."
Coverely said he has taken about 300 calls concerning stolen or vandalized McCain signs in the area.
"It says this campaign is getting vicious," Coverely said.
Coverely said it appears Democrats are becoming more aggressive in the county.
"I wouldn't say slipping, but I would say the Democrats have become far more aggressive in Seminole County because it is such a heavy Republican area," Coverely said.
Meanwhile, McCain was in Florida on Thursday.
The Republican presidential nominee spoke at Allstar Building Materials in Ormond Beach. Later he'll be in Sarasota for a "Joe the Plumber" bus tour rally at Robarts Arena. Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.

True enough, hopefully he can hone his talents in prison.

Booyah?

Hopefully, this won't drive people to vote for McCain. Then again, they are a lot of dumb people out there.
The major media won't report it, and you know it.
O'Reilly just mentioned it on his show... he stated that he didn't think the "B" looked like a knife wound and was skeptical about the story...

The "B" looks like a very superficial scratch... she'll live... I've looked worse after taking elbows in basketball games...

I can't believe people still have bumper stickers. It's the stupidest thing you can do. There are too many crazy people who go nuts...NUTS...nowadays when they see something they don't like. As this story confirms.
Howard Stern has a whole rant about it. Bumper sticker rage.
There was a story about a Bush supporter who saw someone with a Kerry sticker and drove after them aggressively all the way to the persons house.
Here:
http://www.blog.newsweek.com/blogs/labnotes/archive/2008/06/16/bumper-sickers-road-rage.aspx
A scientific study that actually shows Bumper stickers lead to more road rage.

As for the "B" It definitely looks like a superficial scratch like BigT says, not a knife wound.

Agreed, bumper stickers are very tacky and corny... especially, when people have about 15 of them plastered on the back of their '85 Hyundai hatchback...
The "B" looks like a very superficial scratch... she'll live... I've looked worse after taking elbows in basketball games...
My immediate reaction as well. Can you imagine how genteel you'd have to be with a knife to make that light a wound? Moreover, the width of the scratch is quite wide, much moreso than you'd fine is consistent with using a knife.

I don't buy this at all. I'm sure there are ample assholes on both sides of the political fence, but this doesn't hold water, IMO.

EDIT: Also, her eyes are dark but not swollen. I don't buy that either. I'm not a forensic expert, but I know what you look like when you get the shit kicked out of you and attacked with a knife. That is not what you look like.

You know...We humans have a habit of protecting our faces when a knife comes around. That "B" is quite well defined..and it looks more like a fingernail scratch to me.

hoax.

If you read on her blog, she says she's going out to find an ATM machine.. Honestly, who does that? And she actually stops to post an update ON THE WAY to the ATM machine ("Pretty sure I'm on the wrong side of Pittsburg".) Could she be setting up for something? hmm...

You guys are being a bit closed minded about what kind of damage the knife would inflict. Take any knife, turn it 90 degrees, and use it as scratching tool as opposed to a slicing tool, and you can replicate what you see on the woman's face.

As far as credibility goes, take a look at her badly bruised eye. Someone's fist got directly into that socket, and bruised up the skin pretty bad, but her eye looks nearly untouched, no signs of stress in the blood vessels at all. I don't know when the photo was taken, but she should have had a bloodshot eye for a couple of hours at least.

~HotShotX

I don't know the plausability of it, but it is an interesting take you guys have come up with. This would be a damn dirty trick on the McCain campaign if they're behind this.
Either way, someone screwed up in the head is responsible for something bad.

This is from wonkette. When even wonkette is calling mega bullshit this early, you know the story is in trouble.
Never mind the murdered black bear covered in Obama signs, the 78-year-old black Baptist preacher and Army veteran whose Obama sign was replaced with a Confederate flag, the mass tire-slashings of cars parked at Obama rallies, or the “Kill him!” and “Terrorist!” chants at Palin’s klan rallies. What this campaign — meaning, “McCain’s campaign” — so desperately needed is an extremely fishy tale of a brave white woman getting mugged by a Black Man who then carves a symbol into her face. Somebody’s been watching too much Twin Peaks on the Netflix ….

This weird, hysterical story got the MONSTER GIANT THREE-DECK SIREN treatment on Drudge for part of the afternoon, and then it was mysteriously downgraded to a little link on the side. Maybe that’s because the original sensational claim was just a little too perfect (for McCain) to survive scrutiny: That this loyal 20-year-old McCain phone bank volunteer in (of course) Pennsylvania was robbed at an ATM last night because, uh, she had a McCain bumper sticker on her car, parked nearby we guess? So the liberal mugger negro took her sixty bucks and MUTILATED HER WITH A KNIFE.

Oh, and the mutilation was political, because the criminal Obama supporter CARVED A LETTER IN HER FACE!

B!

For “B”arack Obama, of course!

And look here is a picture from a wingnut’s website, as currently seen atop the Drudge Report. Uh, and the MONSTER was so gentle that the gal refused medical treatment, for her mutilation, which is … a backwards “B” kind of indented on her cheek? You know, like if you did this to yourself, in a mirror? Not that we’re implying such a thing! Everybody knows black people can’t write their letters worth a damn, and always go for the tough “B” when they could get away with a much simpler “O.”

The story comes from — wait for it! — Richard Mellon Scaife’s wingnut Pittsburgh daily, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

The attack, of course, “happened outside the view of the bank’s surveillance cameras.” The woman is from College Station, Texas.

The city’s non-wingnut paper, the fine Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, has a far less hysterical article, with this interesting bit from the police:

“This is what she’s telling police,” police spokeswoman Diane Richard said. “We can’t substantiate it at this time.”

Obama’s campaign released this statement: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman for her to make a speedy recovery, and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought to justice.” More like swiftly made the Chief Justice of the new Supreme Abortion Court.

Anyway, this stinks. Happy Willie Horton Day, everyone. We will predict this story will fully unravel in about 48 hours. Weird times.
It's quite the unusual M.O. for someone desperate enough to steal with only a knife to take this kind of personal, self-endangering interest in their random victim. And as myke said, that is some interesting work done on her face. With a blade, or even the back side?

Hmmm. I wonder. I sure she's telling the truth, because the alternative is pretty god awful.

edit: God that's an awful statement. Actually hoping she was telling the truth.

I do not think any liberal pundits espoused pro face carving views.

Unlike any number of cons who actually you know dehumanize and promote violence against so-called anti-Americans.

I give it three days before this is exposed as a hoax.
"Happy Willie Horton Day, everyone."

Wow. That pretty much sums up so very much of my current feelings as well.
Memories of our incompetent campaigner Dukakis... who actually managed to lose California as a Democrat...

BTW, Willie Horton should have been taken out back and shot instead of trying to have been rehabilitated with vacations from prison.

The lack of swelling was the first thing I noticed as well. Then I thought, how in the world do you hold someone down long enough to scratch a B into their face with a knife and not lacerate the skin? Not to mention the B is damn near perfect in shape, something that's pretty hard to do on a wrigling, crying human being. Not that I would know from experience, I'm just postulating...

Maybe I'm all wonked out but the animosity is kinda weird this election.

I live right outside DC and here you can almost always talk politics with anyone without it getting emotional (that goes specially for people working on the hill). It's just some background for this story...

Anyway I was shocked that I finally met someone last night who did take it there - a real grade-A moron. Everyone was going home and started doing the fist bump so I said "terrorist fist jab" for a laugh. Only one moron says
"WHAT DID YOU SAY"
"you know - Fox news and the terrorist fist jab controversy"
"Well I'm a Republican you're talking to"
"OK, good for you"
"I don't think Fox news would say that"
"What can I say man, there's this site called youtube - you might want to check it out"

I was thinking this same thought this morning - around 90% of the country believes we're on "the wrong track," Bush has approval ratings the lowest of any sitting president, and we're economically fucked.

But instead of discussing ideas like reasonable adults, it's the same old mudslinging crap. So I have two thoughts on why that might be:

1) We're culturally severed as a nation in ways that will take over a century to heal/repair
2) This is who we become every 4 years: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4-iYEE9mDE

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/new...-into-her-face-to-undergo-polygraph-test.html

She has to take a polygraph test because the police say her story doesn't tally up.

Also the pic in the OP is mirrored. The B is actually backwards. Like she did it in a mirror to herself and was too dumb to realize it would come out backwards if she did that. Before saying "no ones that dumb!" just remember 1)she supports Mccain 2)she wrote a blog announcing she was going to the ATM.

I'm not saying anything about the forward/backwardness of the "B" since mistakes can be made in hosting images for now.

But I am saying you don't get black eyes that look like that, and you can't possibly make such superficial knife wounds, let alone when a struggle is happening.

Let me put it this way. I'm not kidding at all, either. I'll donate $10 to McCain/Palin if this story proves to be true, or the police at least say it did occur.

no ones that dumb... wait...

but no one is that dumb to actually draw a B backwards the right way...

that's like doing this... d]o.o[b

And someone asking how you did that reverse b.... :wall::dunce:

Edit: For being hit in the eye, the eye looks pretty white to me... even me rubbing it too hard, breaks the eye up in red, my eye would be blood red.....

Let's get this straight ...

Drudge had the picture correct with a backwards "B". I figured Drudge had screwed up.

Yeah, this all makes sense.

A woman drives to the wrong side of town to go to the ATM.

She knows the area is bad and decides to leave the relative safety of her car to go to the ATM.

A man desperate enough to steal money mugs her at knifepoint.

The man proceeds to look away from his victim and marvel at her bumper stickers.

Because he is an avid follower politics (a double threat), he gets enraged and, in a fit of rage, gently carves a reverse "B" on her cheek.

While he is carving, she is compliant instead of running away screaming for her life.

...

Here's a more believable story: Dyslexic Zorro.

I told my father about how this might be a hoax, based on everything said in this thread.

He said she must be an Obama person.

Conspiracy theories, zounds! I'm only going to speculate but from that janky photo there aren't any definable laceration boundaries. I think someone just went nuts with a toothpick on her face.
Because he is an avid follower politics (a double threat), he gets enraged and, in a fit of rage, gently carves a reverse "B" on her cheek.
There's a picture doing the rounds of the scratched B next to her handwriting from a bunch of her posters. Lemme see if I can't find it for ya.
He said she must be an Obama person.
That was probably the only comment I could think of that would add another fantastically insane layer to this story.

Real life is so much more interesting than fiction sometimes.

The allegedly "real" picture if anyone hasn't seen it:

uhh.jpg

hotlinked for her pleasure.

The thing is, she could have single-handedly given McCain the win (I'm not kidding at all) if she took a couple good shots to the face for reals.

And it's Halloween-time. Even Walgreens is stocked to the gills with fake blood n' shit. This is just typical white laziness at its worst.

A few hours after a smackdown, you're still going to have a good swelling to get a black eye like that, even if you're taking an anti inflammatory. 2 or 3 days later you'd probably look like the pic.

And the reverse B is the kicker, I can't give this any credulity whatsoever. At least Tawana Brawley had the sense to make it look real with the garbage bag and feces.

That scratch looks a little less threatening than a fingernail scraping. Maybe a butter knife, but not a weapon with a sharp point or sure. Try doing that with a pokcet knife, it's damn near impossible to do it wthout perforating the skin at least once or twice which would mean we should see some scabbing in a few places. It's just too perfectly shaped to be done by a mugger who commits crimes and relies on speed to keep from being caught.

Why would somebody "scratch" a B into her face? If i were going to do it, i'd actually cut her, wtf is the point of a scratch?

Sounds to me like she was to scared to actually cut herself for this, so she settled on a scratch, probably not even done with a knife.

Really, what kind of mugger scratches someone?

already changing her story.....

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh police say a McCain campaign volunteer who said she was held down by a black man who cut the letter "B" in her face has changed her story.
Police spokeswoman Diane Richard says investigators gave the 20-year-old woman a lie-detector test and are "looking at some inconsistencies" in her story.

The student, Ashley Todd, of College Station, Texas, initially said a black man robbed her at knifepoint Wednesday night and then cut her cheek after seeing a McCain sticker on her car.

Police say bank surveillance footage doesn't show her at an ATM where she says she was attacked.

Todd, who is white, now says she was knocked unconscious and doesn't remember being cut. She now says she only discovered the wound later.

No arrests have been made.
