In an interview with Fox News this evening, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Congress would not vote to increase the nation's debt ceiling -- legislation that must pass to avoid a global economic panic -- without "strings." Those strings could be attached to anything, including health care legislation.

So the US will default unless AHCA is repealed.

"The only way to do all these things it is to put someone in the White House who won't veto any of these things," McConnell said in a speech to the conservative Heritage Foundation.

Man, I have to track down this article about capping the debt limit...

On the surface I think a cap is a good thing. AHCA should be able to exist with cuts other places (ie DOD). Gonna try and track down that article...

edit: i think this is the article. http://www.cato-at-liberty.org/its-simple-to-balance-the-budget-without-higher-taxes/ - basically, cap spending or cap the increase in spending and let inflation and tax revenues do the rest. could be rockin' a surplus by the time obama is out of office.

That's an ironic stance, since the whole point of fiscal discipline is to avoid a Greek-like crisis and this would be manufacturing one.

Hey Mitch! Republicans always talk about wanting to run the US like a business. Notice that businesses are raising money like crazy right now at these rates? Just saying.

That that 2nd part has to be pointed out to the party that keeps lecturing us about running a business makes me want to cry. Time value of money was taught on the first day of economics class. Like right after we went over the syllabus and before the prof let us cut out early cause it was the first day.

If by that you mean pissed it away on war going on a decade long and gave the money to not always the lowest bidder for govt contracts in terms of defense and production and such, well sure.
 
I'm not surprised. This is a guy who proposed a deficit commission then voted against it when Obama proposed it. So incredibly partisan it's disgusting.

Anyhoo, this is really an empty threat since not raising the debt ceiling would mean no money for those groovy wars anymore either.

Indiana was already killing the eastern link of the midwest rail system. We were supposed to have high speed rail lines that went from Chicago-South Bend-Toledo (and then on to Cleveland and Detroit) and then a southern Chicago-Indianapolis-Cincinnati (or Columbus) line but "My Man Mitch" killed it. Last I heard, the Chicago-Milwaukee-Madison-Minneapolis and Chicago-Springfield-St. Louis line would be built.

Now that there's a Republican governor in Wisconsin and increased resistance in Missouri, it looks like a great regional rail system will be reduced to Chicago to East St. Louis. Thanks, conservatives.

Messes with what? We've already got a super dense network of highways that are crumbling.

Nah. Better to stick with the mid-20th Century model of transportation.
