memory makes a diff?

CAGiversary!
i got 2gb ddr2 memory (1gb x 2) in my computer right now and i was just wondering if i added 2 more sticks (1gb x 4) to make it 4gb memory would there be a big difference??

It probably depends on how many applications you have running at once. Unless you have a ton of them running at the same time I don't think you'll notice a huge difference if you upgrade to 4 GB. Even if you play a good bit of games 2 GB of ram should be more than enough at this point (in the future, who knows).

If you tell us what you do on your PC (video editing, serious gaming, or just routine web surfing/word processing) we'd be able to help you a bit more.

Wow 4GB would be overkill unless you're a big video editor or something.

2GB should be just great for games, moderate/heavy internet, and most programs.

32-bit Windows XP can only see 3GB of ram... so adding another 2GB would be worthless. The 64-bit version can handle up to 8GB or 12GB.

Also, as others have said, it depends on what you do. I found that I would have done just fine with only 1GB of memory... I can run 12 of my most common programs and not go over 1GB. I can play any game and I don't go over 1GB either.

yea thats what i thought.. i play games like css and bf2, and sometimes get programs up like my tv tuner/itunes/and a couple websites goin but no biggy.. I was just wondering cause i noticed a difference from a 512 to a 1gb, and just wanted to know if it was worth goin from a 2 to a 4..

if you plan on upgrading to Windows Vista then yes.

acutally i am.. got a free vista upgrade with my desktop when it becomes available..

Vista should ear your ram like a fat man eats McDonalds. Make sure to get memory that's the same speed and specs as your current kind.

Vista is much better at taking advantage of large memory sizes but there is always an issue of diminishing returns. Although 4GB is the hardware's upper limited for a single flat memory range, a variety of issues make it such that only 3GB is really usable. Tests indicate that Vista likes having that 3GB, so it can be worth while if you don't mind having a gig go to waste until 64-bit Vista becomes a more viable alternative for mainstream use.
