Hey, my GameStop has a new and sealed copy of Metal Gear Solid Essentials Collection, but Metal Gear 2 is flipped upside down! (*note- this is not a resealed copy!, it is factory sealed!) I was wondering if this has any potential in being a collector's item one day?

Rare, probably, will someone pay an arm and a leg for it? I really fucking doubt it. If you do buy it, and then resell it for a profit based on that, I have a copy of season 3 of Superman the animated series with one disc having a season two image on it.
No.. and videogames are a bad investment in general.
Not the people with sealed copies of now rare games. The guys with sealed copies of Chrono Trigger laugh at you

Back then people were not buying games to collect. I mean if you brouight copies of Disgaea to resell at $30 you lose money

Sometimes I see copies of Final Fantasy VII on eBay that claim to have a printing error on the back. It seems to be a selling point at least in the minds of some sellers, I don't know if buyers actually care though.

I think this is correct.

From what I've seen, videogame collectors who care about shrinkwrapped or mint tend to be OCD (the rest of us realize that games are meant to be played, even if that means risking a few light disc scratches ;) )

Actually I take it back - mistakes might be valuable depending on the type of mistake.

If the game had a cover where a sneaky art dev snuck in a naked boob, or a first-run print that contained content that was later removed for legal/political reasons - then that version of the game might be valuable. Likewise if the game allowed a popular exploit (looking at you Lumines...)

For example - sealed copies of first-run GTA:SA with the hot-coffee mod code might be valuable someday (although I doubt it given the massive print run)

It won't be worth more because a game is flipped the wrong way, but it will be worth a lot when it's out of print, which I've heard it's already kind of hard to find several places. I bought mine for $20 when Buy.com still had the $10 off google checkout offer. I actually opened mine and played the games though (OH NOEZ).

they can easily make another shippment. I was able to sell DMC collection for $50 but now it is not as rare.

Also it will decepnd on the error. There was a misprint PS1 MGS with no cover art. You can bet that will worth a bit

I have a Wolverine comic book where they meant to refer to Sabretooth as a "killer" and printed "kike" instead...it was pulled from shelves, reprinted, and now my original issue is worth a whopping $5.00 (if that)!!!

So yeah, things are only valuable if people put a value to them. I'm sure somewhere there is a guy that buys error copies of games and may put a higher value on it, but that would be a unique person indeed.

Then again, maybe Neo-Nazi's will catch on to the misprint comic book I have someday and I will be able to retire at an early age....

most if not all of the Black Label FFVII's I have seen in the wild have that Printing error, It gets about the same price as the normal FFVII.

That isn't the MGS with the solid white front, right? (found it at a pawn shop recently)

One game that confuses me as to why it's not worth at least a bit more than usual is The Guy Game. I mean, it was basically Girls Gone Wild meets trivia game. It was pulled from the shelves after one of the girls in it was found to have been 17 when the game was produced(she lied on the release form and was using a fake ID to get into the bars while on spring break there). Unfortunately, I believe Ebay doesn't even allow it to be sold due to that reason, so where I could even find a market for my copy is beyond me.

This reminds me of when action figure resellers at the flea market would ask an arm and a leg for their "super ultra rare" Star Wars figure "errors" where even the slightest mistake made them "worth a fortune".

Copies sell on eBay all the time... it's blocked only if you use the UPC code to list all that additional details and such. But if you just list it by title and don't use the additional information stuff, there's a lower chance of them catching your auction.

The one thing that does get me about this game is how the price fluctuates...

Right, becuase they bought those knowing Chrono Trigger would get valuable but Donkey Kong Country wouldn't.

Games are a lousy investment becuase you can't tell what's going to be rare vs. what isn't, the number of games that actually sell for more than their original MSRP are miniscule at best, a reprint or lucky find in some wherehouse can destroy value overnight, and if you don't sell timely enough, lack of interest in older systems will eat your 'collectible value' anyway.

Buy to play. If you're trying to fill your kids college fund, get a savings bond or something.

This made me laugh out loud.

Yup, here it is, issue #131

I almost bought a kids Cookie Monster t-shirt that was getting pulled from the racks at K-mart due to an obscene electronic phrase he would say. It was CM on a dump truck, when you pushed the wheel it would say "time to truck", but it didn't sound like he was saying truck...

My sister was working there at the time, and I had to rush over and hear it myself before the soft-recall went into effect. Sure enough it sounded like he was ready to get his groove on, no doubt about it. I ended up passing on it. It's probably not worth anything, but I don't think anyone will ever see one again.

Sabretooth interrupted a Bar Mitzvah? Is he even Jewish? I would pay $6 if it was on the cover.

In collecting a printing, packing, or similar error that only occurs in 1 copy isn't really that highly in demand. Now if this error only occurred in the first 1000 copies printed then you might have something valuable.
