Meteorologists UNITE! *OFFICIAL* Forecast Channel thread! OUT NOW!!!

One more wish for closer to my hometown forecast. Closest I can get is the next town over and while it's probably accurate, it's kinda goofy for the channel to say Winston-Salem when I live in Greensboro. And the fact that there are some much much smaller towns than mine on the list is a little irksome too. Still glad to have another channel filled. :D

Yeah, hopefully they add updates to make it even better.

And sure you could go to weather.com, or turn it on the television. But all of that seems like a hassle if you're playing a quick game of bowling, and want to check out what the weather is after exiting out.
blue light freaked me out this morning, thought it was broke or something, glad its just an update
LOL, me too, I woke up in the middle of the night thinking WTF? Why is that light flashing? Did my cat jump on my Wii and break it or something? Then I got on today and saw the message. Way to go big N!

I like how Dallas, Ft Worth, and plano are all pretty much the same exact spot on the map, but they felt the need to give it three different readings. Meanwhile, from the looks of things, if you live in Nevada, you are boned for an accurate reading over 90% of the state.

I generally make motor boat sounds when I do this.
I thought I had saw pictures before of the Wii Channels, and the slot for the Forecast channel had the current temperature and the low for that day?? Am I crazy??
Yeah, I remember seeing this, too. I hope they eventually have updates to do that. It'd be so much neater.

Didn't have a chance to really fiddle with it this morning, as I had to rush off to work. They really need to update more frequently. I left late this morning, but the current temperature was still from last night :\

Whoa... the background music is completely different from what was playing last night.

Its much more upbeat... kinda gives me a feeling of frolicking in a field of flowers or something.

The 3D globe is kind of fun to play with but it's really unnecessary for anybody who's simply looking for local weather. Unfortunately, they need to update with a heck of a lot more cities, so we can actually get local weather forecasts. A zip code input should be requisite. More in-depth information would help, too (e.g. lows, hour-by-hour, etc.). If expansive updates don't happen soon, I don't see this channel surviving much longer once the Opera browser comes out and we're able to go to weather.com.

I suspect that would eat up your system memory.

The forecast channel is pretty snazzy. They didn't have my exact city listed (Greensboro), but they had the next closest one (Chapel Hill) on the list.

I haven't tried spinning the globe yet. I'll try that out later.

Interesting. I used Winston-Salem for Greensboro. I can't believe Greenville and Fayetville are on there but Greensboro's not though...
Yea this is pretty useless. The load time defeats the purpose. It will just be faster to turn on the weather channel.
You must have one of those uber-weather channels that doesn't make you sit through the entire cycle of United States climate zones before they get to the local weather.

More convenient will be my laptop since it's on almost whenever I'm awake, but this will probably be used in the morning to take a minute to check the day's weather.
Yea this is pretty useless. The load time defeats the purpose. It will just be faster to turn on the weather channel.
When you have satellite as your tv provider the closest local weather you get is not that close (on the weather channel and the local news is not always on), so this is really cool (because I get weather from a small city about 10 miles from where I live). Plus I don't need to have a computer running 24/7 for weather, and hey I can check the south pole's weather whenever I feel like.

Rofl. I noticed this last night as well.

It's been stuck at like 90% for like 5 minutes now. Come onnnnnnn...

Edit:

Jesus Christ Nintendo has to do something about this. After 15 minutes of not doing anything (and not erroring out), I hit the home button. It gives me the option to go back to the Wii Menu (which it really shouldn't have), so I say ok. Black screen. No response from anything. At this point, I think I have just bricked my console.

Hold the power button to completely shut it, turn it back on, it's ok. Phew. Now it's having trouble finding my internet. I just got it back, but now it's not downloading anything (not surprising).

It shouldn't be this hard!

Yea, mine just shows the weather, highs/lows, and a 5 day forcast. :bouncy:

Finally updated successfully.

But.

Load times, dear lord. We're talking "Wii Shop" caliber loading when actually getting into the channel. Does it really take this long to connect to the Nintendo servers (even though they're probably busy from being launched today, but still)? Nearly 5 minutes trying to connect to the service, and my wifi signal shows full bars in my options.

Edit:
Although I gotta admit, it's pretty slick!

^Same for me too. I was awake around 4:00 am before the announcement was sent out and noticed on Kotaku that the weather channel was live. I updated in 30 seconds. Seemed fast at the time. I would hate to be updating right now.

It really, really doesn't want to update for me. I thought it was just a huuuuuge update at first and let it go for nearly 2 hours before realizing it wasn't moving anymore. Restarted the wii and tried again. It's been sitting at like 4% for half an hour now, and I'm going to restart once more and try again. If it doesn't work that time, to hell with it, I can wait a week until the traffic's died down.

Yeah, third try ended up doing error 32004, cannot download the update. fuck it.

Set channel to 1 to 11 on your wireless router if you haven't already.

I'm curious if that's the reason it started showing up last night, but I wasn't notified. Perhaps it sends out messages in waves so everyone isn't downloading at once, but everyone has been notified by tomorrow.

Meant to do that a while back but couldn't remember my router's password, just did now though so will try that. Thanks. It was set to 6, apparently.

Drfunk85-- I believe it depends on your router, but for me this was the answer I needed:

And that looks to have fixed it, its downloading super fast now. Rock! Thanks!

Thanks! Its movin a lot faster for me too, hopefully it is able to update it completely this time and not cut out 3/4 of the way through.

Crap...Wii Weather is happening now and I am missing it. Hopefully it will download nice and fast when I get home.

I've started ignoring the blue light because I signed up for those Wii News updates and that keeps my Wii lit up pretty much every day. The novelty is wearing off and the quality of the news is questionable, so I'll probably unsubscribe.

I got no message or blue light. Just went on to download it after seeing the posts here last night.

FWIW, the update took about 2 minutes for me last night and the connection to the Forecast Channel was virtually instantaneous (ie, faster than the Mii Channel even). But I haven't tried it during the day today yet.

The forecast channel is really cool! I like how you can play with the globe and check weather all over the world :)

I don't get why I can access the forecast channel and Mii parade, but NOT the VC store. most frustrating. I don't have a router (connected to a city-wide Wi-fi connection) so I can change the channel.

Nevermind... reason I didn't get the message was because my wireless settings were all screwed up (I updated my router firmware over the weekend and had to redo everything).

Hmm... the loading screen music is almost... FFVI-menu-like.

And wow, this is really pretty nice. As said, the update-interval doesn't really lend itself to up-to-the-minute weather, but for forecasting, this is excellent. Looks like an easy drive for my parents from Detroit to Cleveland this weekend!

209576 mostly and occasionally 051330

I've tried changing the MTU, retried connecting multiple times, nothing works.

I like that it shows the "current" weather on the channel preview menu, so you can get that info without loading anything. I'd really like to have an option for what to display there, as I'd rather have the 5 day forecast at any given moment. But still, a nice feature none the less.

So far my only complaint is that what it offers you worldwide depends on your region. We get a choice of maybe 5 areas in the UK over here, while the people in the UK apparently have several other options there-- I'd imagine they have far less options in the US, though.
I'd like to know how the weather is in Canterbury, England, for example, and the closest option is London, and that's just not close.

At least, a friend over the pond says they have several other options more than I listed, so I assume he's right.

That's a very good point, jezebelseven. The options are pitifully limited at the moment. I'm hoping they continue to evolve it to show more cities all over the world.

Gotta say, the new channel is pretty damn slick. Woke up this morning to a glowing disc slot, downloaded the update in about 4 minutes, and got a look at the weather. :applause: to Nintendo.

I downloaded the channel earlier this morning, but the current conditions seem to be hours behind. It's 11:30 PM right now but it says the conditions are current as of 5:00 PM.
