Meteorologists UNITE! *OFFICIAL* Forecast Channel thread! OUT NOW!!!

I had to take my dad to the airport early this morning. I noticed that my Wii's blue light around the disc drive thingy kept flashing....at first I thought there was something wrong with it, so turned it on and nothing happened. I went to one of the channels and it started updating...haven't had a chance to look at the Forecast Channel yet....does the Wii download and install updates automatially if you leave it in standby mode or does it just download them and waits for you to install them?

Sadly, neither. If Nintendo sends out an e-mail alert, then you'll get a blue light, and right now, that's as good as you can hope for.

All updates at the moment require you to do a system update, where it downloads and installs it all at once. Apparently the firmware isn't able to download it into memory and then install it - it does it as it downloads it, which is one of the things that led to a few people bricking their systems.

I hope it gets changed. Why would you waste the WiiConnect24 feature by not allowing background/idle downloads?

I'm also disappointed in the city selections- I finally changed my location from San Francisco to Sacramento this morning around 8:30 am, only to find that the Sacramento weather info was as of 5:00 pm YESTERDAY.

It's not often that I want the weather from last night. Once we get more cities and (nearly) live data I'll be happier.

nice to see this channel finally active. not sure how much I'll be using it.

I'll add myself the crowd who thinks the city selection should've been better.
Besides more cities, it also needs state/country outlines for easier searching.
Something for a future upgrade would be toggleable (is that a word?) GIS overlays. The state/country outlines would be the most obvious one - but there could be others (rivers, major roads, urban areas beyond the already marked cities, etc). But you should be able to toggle them in the settings, as you might not always want them on.

I'm sitting here in my cubicle in SF and looking out my window, and I see rain. That's not what the 5 day forecast told me two days ago. WTF, Nintendo.

Anyone notice that the stars in globe mode correspond to actual constellations? Ursa Major FTW.
While that was cool, I was disappointed that there was no moon or sun on there, as well.

I wanted the channel thumbnail to show current weather, as the marketing suggested. I also find no use for yesterday's weather shown as "current". This thing needs to update every time I launch it.

As far as I can tell, this thing updates about three times a day. Absolutely pathetic. Everytime I head out to work or school in the morning I get a reading from 5 a.m. and whenever I head out to dinner or a party in the evening I get a reading from 4 p.m. Useless.

Not only that, but the constellations you see coincide with what you'd see from whatever part of the globe you're looking at and change with the seasons. Pretty nifty.

I agree that the infrequency of updates kind of sucks, but I don't think it's "useless," as some people have opined. If I check the Weather Channel at 11:00 PM, I don't expect the forecast will change completely by the time I wake up. Weather systems don't change dramatically over the course of 4-8 hours, unless you're talking about severe thunderstorms, blizzards, etc., in which case you probably shouldn't be relying on your Wii for updates anyway.

Hopefully we'll see more frequent updates in the future.

For me, the Forecast Channel is useless in its current incarnation. At least if the updates were closer to the times when most people leave their houses, I wouldn't have a problem. But if I'm heading out of the house at 8 am, a reading from 5 am is going to be significantly colder. If I'm heading out of the house at 7 pm, a reading from 4 pm is going to be significantly warmer. At this point, I'm better served just looking out the window. Then again, I guess the same could be said of some dedicated weather services, and this is a tertiary feature of the Wii at best.
