Because I finished FFCC: Ring of Fates yesterday, I went through my game library trying out games I hadn't tried yet, trying to find my next "fix."
I have fond memories of playing Meteos, loving the little aliens, talking about high scores and planets on the old Nintendo forums, loving the differences in gravity. Concepts such as gravity and the weight of the blocks just made sense in Meteos, and while playing Disney Meteos today, I was distracted by the same concept.
Honestly, in my mind, the two concepts don't fit together, Disney and gravity-weighted blocks needing firing back to their source. My mind can't bend around the concept, and while puzzle games need no real story or motivation (look at Puzzle Quest if you need any proof of that; although we all enjoyed the game, the story is still just dressings), I can't help but feel like I'm playing a game which could be quality were it not heavy with Disney trappings.
Do I enjoy seeing the Lion King and Nightmare Before Christmas themes? You bet. But the combination of Disney and Meteos isn't a perfect fit, and the unlockables are a waste of time when compared with the original. Artwork? If I want artwork I'll visit Google Images. Playing the game by holding the DS on its side is a little awkward at first, and I find that the shifting artwork on the left side ends up looking slightly shimmery to me, but it may simply be because I don't have the hinge locked.
It's not a bad game, by any means, but it's hard to love it when the original was so terrific. Sequels always have to work harder to outshine their formers, and while this isn't a true sequel, it's a tribute, and I don't believe it satisfies.
