Meteos vs Disney Meteos

I think in the Disney Meteos you can move pieces horizontally and vertically, eliminating much of the challenge.

I bought the original Meteos on launch and it is great. Disney Meteos just seems to be relying on the Disney affiliation and good name of the first.

From what I've heard, as long as you can get past the gimmicks, and use of Disney characters, it's actually a pretty solid game. I'm too in love with the original to move onto a Disney liscensed one tho.

I have both. I can't recommend Disney Meteos though. Aside from being nigh impossible on some levels, I don't see the value in it. Plus, turning the DS sideways to play feels awkward.

I have both versions of Meteos and unless you're a huge fan of the gameplay, you probably just want to own one of them.

Is the Disney version easier? No. But if you can't stand Disney, stay far far away. The original has arguably better music, nothing licensed, no Lion King jungle chanting or Lilo and Stitch characters, etc.

Personally I like them both for the fact that despite being essentially the same game, they both offer up completely different experiences.

I have both of them, and personally, aside from all the Disney stuff, I find Disney Meteos to be the better game. Turning the DS on its side to play and the ability to move the pieces horizontally just made this a much more better game than the original, which I was never really too fond of (it's alright, but there are way better puzzle games out there on the DS).

Really though, I wish they would take these improvements, keep the Alien theme from the first game (gosh those little Aliens are so cute!), and add online play. That right there may just be the best puzzle game on the DS.

Exactly. It would make the game quite easier. That's the main reason I don't plan on buying it.

I played the Disney version at Best Buy for about 2 minutes and I felt like I was cheating, there was nothing to it.
I'm sure the difficulty varies, I just wasn't overly impressed.

Just get one. The only reason I own both is because I bought Disney Meteos first (couldn't resist it for $7.50 at TRU and couldn't find Meteos anywhere). A few weeks later, I found Meteos at CC for $8.96. I'll have to admit that I like the Disney version better. I think most people who played Meteos first will not like the Disney version.

Just because you can move the pieces horizontally in no way makes the disney version easier. I can't for the life of me beat any of the "Little Mermaid" levels because of the pieces being weighted down so much. I had no problems with any of the levels on the original Meteos however.

Been wanting to get this for my son but can't find it cheap anywhere.

I only have the disney version and I don't like it much. Aside from the disney themes used (why no aladdin?) The music is just so haooible. It really pulls the game down because of that one thing. And yes I agree those lil Mermaid stages are so hard

I took a pic last night.
How did you pick up Disney Meteos for $7.50 at TRU?
It's a definite mis-tag. ;)

They had several copies and when I bought mine a few weeks ago and did a price-check on another last night, they both rang up for $7.50.

edit: A month ago, Disney was tagged at and rang up for $14.99 (there is a faint 14 underneath the 7 in the pic), but I passed as $15 was still too much for me for this type of game.

Assuming that you're trying to play without cheating (i.e. scribbling), Disney Meteos is so much harder. This will not be apparent if you play it for 5 minutes at Best Buy.

Disney Meteos has level goals for each of the levels. And they set a high mark. I consider myself "pretty good" at regular Meteos, and it took me several tries to get through Normal Mode. Normal Mode. They may look cute, but they can be brutal. Even the cutesy fireworks can quickly spiral out of control. There is stuff flying at you so fast that it really doesn't matter that you can go horizontal. It doesn't help that much. If you're a real stickler, once you get to Hard Mode, you can only move horizontally with power ups.

As for which is better? I have a fondness for regular Meteos that makes me prefer it. I like the little aliens and the music and the design. And the unlockables on regular Meteos blow those in Disney Meteos out of the park.

That said, I like holding the DS on its side, I like the Lion King and NMBC graphics and music (one of the Lion King stages has great African music) and while it's unforgiving, I think I like the goals, challenges, and medals on Disney Meteos.

On the whole though, I think the Disney transplant wasn't as successful as it could have been. The story is weak and the usages of the licenses could have been done much better -- there's very little personality despite having Disney themes. Kingdom Hearts:COM used its characters a thousand times better.

But if you're staying away because you think it'll be too easy, think again.

I now have a follow-up question (though maybe it should get its own thread):

I picked up the original Meteos used at GS for $15. However, when I got home, I noticed it said "Not for Resale" on the game cart. Is there any difference in this version? And wasn't it illegal/wrong for GS to sell it? Any chance I could get my money back but keep the game for free? :)

Store managers get games for free a little before the game comes out. The manager at the GS I sometimes go to waited for Metroid Prime Hunters to come out before trading in his copy. I picked it up the day it released, but the packaging was a little different (no foil/holographic elements) and the cart was also marked not for resale. I doubt you can get anything for your trouble. At most they'll let you return it.

Yep, my receipt even says "NDS Meteos." I could take a pic of that, too, if you'd like.

Is this misprice universal at all TRU's? If so, I'll go pick it up right now. I like Disney and I loved the first Meteos. I even like holding the DS sideways (at least based on my time with Hotel Dusk).
Does the Disney version of the game have Disney music?
Sort of. NMBC uses one theme from the movie ("Making Christmas") but the
rest are kind of "flavor of" the movie. I'm really fond of the Lion King music, though it has nothing to do with the movie.

If you're looking for the tunes you love from the movies, you won't find them. You will find music that would fit in the movie, and a couple of them are almost good enough to trick you into thinking you're listening to actual movie music. The other NMBC track definitely evokes "This is Halloween", and sounds great with symphonic music and chanting, but isn't the actual song.

I don't think so. I was at TRU yesterday, and the shelf tag was 29.99.

Some game reviewers (Game Informer) gave the game a low score simply because of the music. It's not THAT bad. The original Meteos has better music, has a "cooler" theme (etc.), and I'm glad I have both, but the second version is my favorite. Going back to the first, the control just feels too unresponsive, and the little squares are way too tiny.

Those who are saying that Disney Meteos is too easy have simply not played it enough. This game gets TOUGH. Love the sideways orientation, too.

People are right about the unlockables, though - they're mostly just "artwork" and "animation" that you can already see in-game. The original Meteos was better-designed in this respect.
Is this misprice universal at all TRU's? If so, I'll go pick it up right now.
Nope, sorry. I passed by a 2nd TRU after class and it was tagged and scanned as $29.99. But, that 1st TRU still scans it as $7.50, go figure. If it was universal, I would've definitely started a thread about it.

Because I finished FFCC: Ring of Fates yesterday, I went through my game library trying out games I hadn't tried yet, trying to find my next "fix."

I have fond memories of playing Meteos, loving the little aliens, talking about high scores and planets on the old Nintendo forums, loving the differences in gravity. Concepts such as gravity and the weight of the blocks just made sense in Meteos, and while playing Disney Meteos today, I was distracted by the same concept.

Honestly, in my mind, the two concepts don't fit together, Disney and gravity-weighted blocks needing firing back to their source. My mind can't bend around the concept, and while puzzle games need no real story or motivation (look at Puzzle Quest if you need any proof of that; although we all enjoyed the game, the story is still just dressings), I can't help but feel like I'm playing a game which could be quality were it not heavy with Disney trappings.

Do I enjoy seeing the Lion King and Nightmare Before Christmas themes? You bet. But the combination of Disney and Meteos isn't a perfect fit, and the unlockables are a waste of time when compared with the original. Artwork? If I want artwork I'll visit Google Images. Playing the game by holding the DS on its side is a little awkward at first, and I find that the shifting artwork on the left side ends up looking slightly shimmery to me, but it may simply be because I don't have the hinge locked.

It's not a bad game, by any means, but it's hard to love it when the original was so terrific. Sequels always have to work harder to outshine their formers, and while this isn't a true sequel, it's a tribute, and I don't believe it satisfies.
