Mexican immigrants smarter than MIT students?

Wired has the story of how four students from Carl Hayden Community High School in Phoenix, Arizona beat some of the best schools in the country, including MIT, to win the national underwater robot championship.

The students, who are all undocumented Mexican immigrants, built their robot on the cheap in just three days, using PVC pipe, off-the-shelf electronics and a few tampons.

Called “Stinky”, the bot can record sonar pings and retrieve objects 50 feet below the water’s surface. In addition to the top prize, the bot also ended up winning the design and technical writing awards. The team’s total budget ended up being just $800, compared to $11,000 for the MIT team.

I'm not surprised. Undocumented does not mean uneducated. I know lots of people that have been well educated in Mexico and Cuba. Its great to see a story like this published.

Maybe they can go to Iteso after they're deported.



I only specifically say Iteso because that's where my mother was attending before she moved back to the US, and as such it's the only university in Mexico that comes to mind. :lol:

When Luis lowered Stinky into the water for their run, Lorenzo prayed to the Virgin Mary. He prayed that the tampons would work but then wondered if the Virgin got her period and whether it was appropriate for him to be praying to her about tampons.
