Miami, Fl, passing law against GTA ?!?!

No, its good. If you read it, you would see that it wasnt for banning the game, but rather "would impose a $250 fine on retailers who sell or rent to a minor, without parental approval, a game in which players kill or cause harm "to a human form."

If they're going to put the ratings on there, there should be a fine for breaking them.

"U.S. Rep. Joe Baca, a California Democrat, has repeatedly tried to get backing for a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives to make it a federal misdemeanor to sell violent games to minors. "

Then, atleast when kids do play violent games, the parents can be blamed for allowing it.

and then maybe the media can get off video game company's backs and point fingers at who really is to blame -- bad parents who dont teach their kids right from wrong.

pointless. inner city school kids see far worse every day. politicians just want to look good in public and on paper and also make them selves rich. they are to busy passing real estate capital gains bills to that save them $500k to give a fuck about the youth. what a gimmick

They see worse but why is it getting worse, that is the question. It's not pointless, it's good. Good for you, me and the gaming industry. Would you rather see a gaming company get sued or a parent/store get sued? I'd much rather see the true irresponsible party get sued, not a gaming company. With these laws in place the gaming industry has a better chance of winning these bogus lawsuits.

blah blah blah. you cant protect kids from this twisted society no matter how many laws you past. Cable channels are turning into soft core porn stations every day by the minute. Prime example E!. Wild on- Howard Stern etc.. And lets not even talk about the music. Americas whole social structure is just some big media advertisement. You cant hide from it. Thats waht I friccin hate about tis schizo ass country. Every body just acts so fake and like they dont wanna accept the fact that Americans are being conditioned to be immoral from birth. What a fvckin GIMMICK. Just give us our video games and shut the fvck up. Poloticians are jokes. Prime example=Governator.

the fvck outta here

Let me guess, anarchy?

It's a joke because everyone wants to blame the wrong person. Blame the parents, that's where it starts. Blame the stores for allowing it. Do not blame the gaming industry for making games for adults. you think that cable channels have no one behind them? Of course they do, and that person learned their ways from whom? His/her parents. My parents taught me morals and good judgement, therefore I don't produce smut. Your parents let the TV decide your morals, therefore you produce smut

yeah I guess. There is a cycle that needs to be broken. I been thinking about joining thje Peace Corps, going to Africa and becoming a no fee surgeon in an under priviliged village or trying to become a Monk or some shit. I was watching Today NBC and they was talking about something called "Volunteer Vacations" were you make a donation and go to a 3rd world country and mentor the children. I really wanna just go to the East and become a monk but I dont know the requirements. I wish that they had a web site. Thatll break it for sure

There has always been a $500 fine for stores selling mature content to teens(at least in miami). When I was younger I use to get carded all the time at best buy and circuit city. At target you need to enter date of birth to purchase mature titles.

I say if your ganna blame someone blame the independent stores and the PARENTS but mostly PARENTS they purchase theses titles for thier kids knowing it has a mature rating right on the fronst cover

All mature content, or just content of types that weren't around when the councilmembers were growing up? Movies? Books?

And what exactly is "mature content"?

Remember that book with all the murder and rape and sodomy and torture? The bible should definitely not be made available to anyone under 18, right? Or at least they should have a cleaned-up version.

FWIW, the game ratings, as far as I recall, are 'voluntary' and not required by any laws. I don't necessarily have a problem with this law, but it's too specific. Okay, prevent them from buying GTA [although many times, if you block kids from buying stuff, they'll find it anyway, the old Eden syndrome.] Also don't let them into R-rated movies. Don't sell them MC Wack Daddy CD's talking about jackin' the *** and whatever else they do.
But ultimately, I do believe, it is the parent's responsibility--either to prevent a child of a certain age/maturity/emotional intelligence from getting/seeing certain product, or in teaching them right from wrong, real from fantasy, etc. Because ultimately, they *will* be exposed to it, unless you keep them in a bubble.
Eldad9--Don't forget, in addition to that violent book, the 6:00 News should be banned. And the newspapers. And any prime-time 'must see tv.' The borders are getting eroded, and it takes more and more to titillate us nowadays. Hard to believe only what, 40 years ago, Lucy and Ricky slept in twin beds. Made it hard to explain Little Ricky.
Oh, didn't they tell you? before Rock'n'Roll corrupted the nation's youth, everybody slept in twin beds.
I knew they never should have allowed the Pelvis or those Beetles on Ed Sullivan!

For some reason, I thought that comment was hillarious

What blows my mind is how video games are singled out. I have yet to see a game in which the protagonist cooks and eats someone's brain (like iin Hannibal) or where someone eats dog shit ( an American Wedding) oor that has half the bad language of a lot of comedies like Clerks. They cracked down on movies a little bit when they made laws about when and where R rated movies could be advertised, that's why we see so much PG-13 rated crap in the last few years. Movie content is far more explicit than anything in games in terms of sex, violence, and language, yet there is no fine, nor any proposed fine that I'm aware of for letting a minor see or buy an R rated film. What everyone forgets is that movie ratings are voluntary too, they've just become a very accepted part of the market place and have created censorship. With games becoming a bigger moneymaker than movies, what will happen? I kids can't buy M rated games by law, than a lot of game publishers will insist on T rated content just like in the movie industry right now. It doesn't matter that the majority of gamers are no longer kids, as kids will always represent a sizable market segment. I agree that kids shouldn't be playing mature rated games, and I would love for there to be a legal way to hold parents accountable, but until you're willing to apply the same controls and penalties to movies, music and all other entertainment, leave games alone.

"Have they ever watched Cartoon Network?" North Miami video store owner Bob Richardson told the Miami Herald newspaper. "It's the most violent network on television."
I just thought that was kind of funny in that article. Yeah and Bugs Bunny was ok. Heck they actually smoked and drank on those cartoons, I remember this one episode where Bugs is being chased underwater by this dog with poofy red hair. At the end the dog shoots himself in the end, and then just says "This shouldn't happen to a dog".
I remember seeing it again in Cartoon Network and it was edited...they cut the shooting part, the screen just goes black and then he says his line. People are so retarded...yeah tv made me kill people. I am just so sick and tired of it all. Stop blaming the damn media and blame the person. I don't care what they say, I grew up on all type of "violent" cartoons and games. I have no need to go out and kill anybody...yeah yeah I know I'm in the military, but I didn't join to kill anyone :p Anyways I just think people take things too seriously.
