Microsoft bans accounts for downloading CoD4 beta.

There was an exploit (it's been resolved), in the call of duty 4 beta. The public beta had 100k valid participants who qualified and were provided special tokens which allowed them to download the COD4 beta from marketplace.
There was an exploit that enabled valid beta participants to sign in with their accounts on a different machine, use their beta token and download the beta. The beta was then fully functional for any LIVE profile on that 2nd machine (even after the beta participant's account was removed). Approximately 23k consoles were used to take advantage of this exploit to illegitimately access the COD4 beta.

The exploit has been fixed to prevent any additional users from illegitimately accessing the COD4 beta.

The current POR is to issue a 24-hour console lockout that will prevent these 23k users from using their consoles to sign in to LIVE. These users will also receive a message in the dash with an explanation as to why their console has been locked out for 24 hours for violating the LIVE TOU [Terms of Use] and a warning that more severe actions may be taken if they attempt a similar action in the future (console could be banned permanently, etc.). Again, this is not a permanent console ban - it's more of a "slap on the wrist" and a warning to these 23k users who used this exploit

There was no hacking, no complicated work-around to exploit anything, you just fucking loaded your fucking profile and downloaded the item from XBL just like you normally would with ANY other piece of content. fuck the Terms of Service, how about fucking common sense and courtesy? I know it's only one day but this is fucking riddiculous.

Punish your own devoted, paying userbase. Real fucking nice, shitheads.

Bad enough you release shitty hardware, now you're punishing us for your shitty software too?

Umm.. those people violated the "Terms of Service" when they signed up for the beta. I think being banned for only 24 hours is only a slap on the wrist.

I say about time, and they need to start taking it to the next level and using the approach of Insomniac on the PSN and banning people for acting like idiots. It had nothing to do with their code. It's not like some ingame wall glitch or something. It's intentionally sharing account information to download the beta to be played on another account.

I don't understand the reason for such outrage. Some users violated the ToS and were punished. They should have known there could be potential backlash from it.
 
Sounds fine to me. I don't see what the problem is. They're lucky they only got banned for 24 hours. Rei forbid they can't call someone the N-word in Gears for a day.

The same people who would use this type of exploit are the same people who would cheat online. No different in my book. I wish it had been full out 'get a new 360 if you want to play online' ban.

Yeah, it's not like these guys were banned permanently. 24 hours is a perfectly reasonable punishment.

Had I known about this, and known someone that could have helped me out, then I would have been one of those people and I never cheat in any game. The reason i would have done this would have been because I didn't get in on the CoD4 beta:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry: and I'm a huge HUGE fan of the CoD series.:cry::cry::cry:

Oh well, still the game comes out before my birthday so I'll just get it then. It would have been nice had Activision just given out some codes to some of their top players of CoD 2/3. I would have been in on it as i'm in the top 5000 on coD3 and kicked ass on 2.

Oh, and about the XBLA thing. We should be able to transfer xbla games from console to console because we paid for them. Well, it's more like we payed for an extended rental, really.

The terms of use I agree to when downloading a title SPECIFICALLY STATE I have the right to use it on the console I download the item on, and ANY other console I sign onto XBL on with my account.

Major Nelson doesn't say shit, he just says that Infinity Ward's 23 thousand number is wrong (and gives no specifics to back up the claim), and that we should all bow down and praise MS for the glorious bounty they feed us down from heaven.
 
I'm glad they did this. I'm sure they never gave it a thought that people would do that but they chances are did know you could do it. This should have been fixed from the start and wasn't. I still think gamers in other countries should be banned from it till it is made interational. Banning 23k users for one day is a slap on the wrist but what about the 23k or so users that got in with this. Are they going to be locked out or banned also.

Where you specificly given the beta code? No? Then you should have had the common sense to not find a way around it. I don't care how technical you want to be about how you got the beta access. It's like buying a cd player out the back of a truck. It's fine, because you didn't steal it, right? Wrong.

You pretty much have to stab Bill Gates in the neck to get banned from LIVE. Official Xbox Magazine did a test a while back trying to get banned and couldn't. The system is a joke.

Threatening other people - Acceptable

Or it could just be that they'll ban whatever's easily proven. If they banned someone for one report of racism or profanity then the whole service would cease to exist.
