Check out the 6th paragraph:

"Lee said production of the consoles was going smoothly and Microsoft remains on track to meet its previously stated goal of shipping between 4.5 million and 5.5 million consoles by June 2006, when the Redmond-based software company's fiscal year ends."

Thoughts? How does hearing this affect your opinion about launch-day shortages?

They're talking 5 million worldwide in 7 months. Doesn't really impact what they're going to have in the next 2 weeks.

3 million worldwide within 90 days isnt too unreasonable. I dont think that changes anything. The time between Launch and Christmas is only about a month.
June 2006 is a long way off, this doesn't really comment on the launch day numbers.
True, and hitting that number by 6/07 is less than 500k units/month.

But here's the thing: this is straight from the horse's mouth. Here is MS' chance to say "they are going to sell out, buy them QUICK" and they don't. Instead, they say "we are on target."

To me, that says MS doesn't believe there will be a shortage.

Like Europe really needs a launch now, with Ghost Recon 3 on the back Burner what will they play?...PGR3

Microsoft would have enough machines for a solid release and steady supply thereafter.
Which translates into, we are really far behind and we don't have enough consoles for launch.
Interesting, but I didn't read it that way.
It could happen with the 3million in 90 days...how many preorders have they sold?
Is 90 days what they are calling their launch 'window'. I think if I was really set on getting one and couldn't for 3 months I would be far less keen.
Interesting, but I didn't read it that way.
It was basically a "no comment" answer to the question. They are going to be short on launch day.

Guys: ask yourself why you think that; who is telling you that they are already sold out?

Read the last few paragraphs, which start:

Dan DeMatteo, vice chairman and chief operating officer for video-game retailer GameStop, said his company has exhausted its supply of PSPs, aside from a few unclaimed preorders.

While I agree that the X360 launch is different in many ways from the PSP launch, look at what Gamestop says vs everyone else. (in short: Gamespot says they've sold out, everyone else says they've got plenty)

I'm not trying to put anyone on the spot; I'm doing this because I despise Gamespot's policy of pushing preorders, and I want gamers (especially CAG's) to be educated consumers.

Gamestop is not the only one saying they are sold out. Where do you get this stuff, educated consumer? Go to any retailer doing pre-orders and ask if you can get an X360 at launch.

(bold emphasis added by me)

Don't take it personally guy, I'm just trying to illustrate a point.

I'm also trying to illustrate a point. That retailers are going to be severely lacking in X360's at launch. Stores are to the point of having to start calling people that have their systems pre-ordered and telling them that they will not be able to pick it up at launch.

There is no conspiracy here, just a shortage of X360s.
Stores are to the point of having to start calling people that have their systems pre-ordered and telling them that they will not be able to pick it up at launch.
(emphasis mine)

I believe that, just like the PS2 launch, the Gamestop's and EB's of the world will all sell out, and many many people who pre-ordered will be left high and dry. At the same time, just like the PS2 launch, your Target's and Best Buy's will have plenty.

I'm trying to show (one of the reasons) why I hate preorders. And that pre-orders only work for a particular company if they can get you to believe there will be short supply.

So I say again: ask yourself (not you Ship, you CAG's) why you believe there will be short supply. Who told you that? (Don't feel you have to answer me, I'm only trying to get people to think about their purchases)

Do you actually think that EB/Gamestop would want to piss off the majority of people that have pre-ordered systems from them? Do you think Microsoft would want to short the #2 seller of video games while providing an ample amount of systems to other retailers? It doesn't add up. Like I said before, there is no conspiracy here.

I'm sorry if I come off as thinking that; I don't.
