Microsoft points craigslist rip-off - josh nolan, seattle

amphigorey

CAGiversary!
Ok, I'm done with looking for local videogame deals on craigslist!

This weekend a kid sold me two 4000 point cards that he assured me were legit, a present from his grandmother. I should have known better.

The cards had not been activated at the register - i.e. stolen. So in effect, I paid two white trash teenage kids $50 for stolen goods.

I only hope the name he gave me, Josh Nolan, from Edmonds in Seattle, WA is his actual name and that this thread gets crawled and indexed just so it screws up his future vanity searches. Grumble.

And the bastard is still posting today:

I am currently in possession of several 4000 Microsoft point cards but I have no Xbox 360.
I will sell 1 for $35 or both of them for $55.
Also, if you come to me I will take $5 off of your purchase.
Please email me back with your phone number if you are interested.

I'd go to the local police precinct and file a report so that the cops don't come calling on you for receipt of stolen property. Make sure you bring copies of the original CL ad and all your e-mail/text message correspondence.

I never EVER purchase gift cards from individuals ... it's a pretty common Craigslist scam. If there's a silver lining, at least you didn't get taken for a large amount of money. I've read about scamsters selling stolen airline vouchers and gift cards and fleecing people out of hundreds of dollars the same way.
My latest CL hunts for game deals have ended up with some idiot showing up with copied disks when the pic in the ad was of the originals ... at least your guy was clever.

AMEN.

I'd take my payment in a pile of money or a pound of flesh.

ummm...set up another email address, reply to his ad, use a different name and say you'll come to him. Look at his ad.."come to me" he says...he's just begging to get caught. Bring the cops with you.
How did that happened? You dont activate Microsoft points cards. The card itself is just a piece of carboard with a code.
Well see there was this issue with people stealing MS point cards and other likes from stores... so they decided to change something.. They made it so the stores can use a swipe system, Like for pre payed phone cards.. that way if some guy desires he needs to steal some 360 Codes.. he's stealing 1c hunks of plastic

Create a new email and false name for that email. Email him asking for the cards and if u can meet up at his place. Bring an officer.

Best advice to do in this case.

Depends how far your want to go with it. If you don't go the cop route I'd email him and have him meet a place of your choosing. Lie and offer him 10 bucks to get it to you within a certain time frame so he doesn't really have time to think about it. Make that a spot where you can have a friend come in after him and block his ass in. You can get his plate number this way to.

Had something similar happen when I guy on craigslist sell me counterfeit tickets. The guy text me from a prepaid phone. I know it was prepaid because a friend of mine works for tmobile and looked up the number for me. Anyways I kept responding to other craigslist postings with a google voice number as the contact and informed them to text me if they still had the tickets. Eventually was sent a text from his number again. Arranged a set up at a bank that had closed down. 2 friends boxed his car in. We took his ID from his wallet and took cell pics of it. Took his plate number and took the 60 I paid him back plus interest (another reason I never turned anything into the police).

Didn't involve the cops. Not worth the fee for small claims here and they can't make him give us our money back. He'd probably get community service and a low misdemeanor if that at all. Not worth dealing with.

Sleepy, pretty goddamned hardcore of you.

Hope that everything gets situated. I'd second contacting the kid. Or better yet, if he's a teenager, it may be worth it to get his parents' contact information and contact them directly at work.
How did that happened? You dont activate Microsoft points cards. The card itself is just a piece of carboard with a code.
Actually, you do. The older cards in the plastic shells at retail stores were pre-activated with a live code.

The newer cards that aren't in their plastic shells, backed by FastCard, those do need activation. You pretty much only see the newer cards these days and not the older cards.

^ I'd do this!

Otherwise, something else you can do is contact the police dept. and and explain the situation. Tell them that you would like to act like you are going to buy the cards on CL, and then have a cop there for the transaction. If the kids are still selling them, they need to be dealt with.
