Well frankly you can end facing the same thing with ever system.
The genesis removed it's headphone jack, the PS removed the paralle port and improved it's drive and got 2/3 SMALLER, The PS2 lost the iLink port and gained things like prograssive scan and a built in IO port for the remote, the Gameboy alone has had like 4 or 5 different revisions in it's lifetime!
Technology will always get better the longer you wait for it. Early adopters pay for the privlage of owning a product first with the possible cost of cooler features or improved design later on.
