mkv file format

anyone with any knowledge of it can you point me in the direction of a player to play it on or a free way to convert it to another file format if thats even possible. any help is appreciated.
 
Download the Matroska pack (I believe it is matroska.org) to play it in windows media player. I also recommend ffdshow to cover all necessary video/audio codecs.
 
Rather than that, I prefer CCCP. I use to go with the old ffdshow and matroska but I find that CCCP includes nearly all the codecs you'll need to be able to play most videos you'll probably run in to. Plus it includes Media Player Classic that will run any files that VLC and WMP will not (Which I use for MKV).

i appreciate the help everyone i ended up getting the cccp pack downloaded and all the files work perfectly. not too thrilled with the volume levels but eh. do any of you know how to put an avi file back together? i downloaded something from somewhere and its in 4 pieces.
