So how do you guys educate yourself on what goes on during a match?

With football, I spent a little time playing Madden and watched a lot of games, and I ended up getting a good grasp of what's going on during a game. With MMA, I don't know what the hell is going when a fight hits the ground.

My friend's been training jiu-jitsu for a while, so when I watch a fight with him, he sees things coming a mile away, and I find myself saying how the hell did you see that? That the sort of thing that probably only comes with first-hand experience?

Guessing I'd appreciate the sport a lot more than I already do if I knew how to know what's going on.
I was confused about grappling at first too. It was hard to tell who had who and what guard was what. Just watching more fights and studying up on a couples moves helps (namely subs). Watching many seasons of TUF also helped me as you can see them train and work on some things. After awhile it just comes together and that's when you really get into it. I still hate 15 minute hugfests but its part of the game.

Well, training Jiu-Jitsu will educate you very quickly, but otherwise just watch MMA fights with a grapple-heavy fighter involved. Watch Demian Maia's older fights when he grappled, Kyle Noke, whatever...then listen to the commentary and work off that to learn the guards/submissions.

What I did was when I was first getting into it I downloaded a huge archive of fights UFC/Pride/Dream from demonoid and just watched everything. And then I watched all the TUFs. Just experience seeing all those different fights and different techniques helped learn what was going on and in the older broadcasts they sometimes had segments explaining how certain things were done - ie triangle chokes, rnc, omoplattas, etc. I wish they still did that but I guess there's only so many times you can go over a submission.

Yeah basicly just keep watching more fights, and you'll keep learning more about it,along with the rules and different positions commentary helps especially for those new to the sport with explaining whats going on.

Dana White confirmed today that former WEC Bantamweight Champion & UFC Bantamweight fighter Miguel Torres was released from the organization after tweeting what is said to a quote from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" referring a "Rape Van" as a "Surprise Van", the original Tweet from Torres was "If a rape van was called a surprise van, more women wouldn't mind going for rides in them. Everyone likes surprises."

Dana White cut Torres saying along the lines that he had "no excuse or defense" for Torres and that if Torres finds that to be a joke, he is sick. White said "I find it disturbing".

Torres may have been an example as he posted this particular tweet a month after Former UFC Light Heavyweight & Ultimate Fighter 1 winner Forrest Griffin made a Rape Joke on twitter and the tweet of Torres came less than 24 hours after another Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans told his opponent from this Saturday in a Fox Press Conference for the event that "He would put his hands on him worse than the Penn State Coach" (This is in reference to the opponent Phil Davis having been a former Penn State Wrestler).

The UFC seems to be having troubles with it's fighters outlandish behavior. With the Fox deal set for 2 years, White has said that this will be the "most important 24 months" for the sport. With the fighters & company both being in a larger main stream spotlight, this is not the best step.

My thoughts personally, Torres is a rough example but was warranted and good to see Dana putting a foot down. With Rashad 'having apologized' for his behavior and saying what he did 'in the heat of the moment', I would expect his #1 Contender fight to push him back a tad. That was much worse than quoting a shows questionable dialogue to me personally.

*Made an actual thread for this earlier but I guess it should have gone here, SORRY ^.^

Damn, I'm not a fan of Torres but that is way too harsh. Not fair that Torres gets shafted here even though Griffin and Evans made similar comments. Rampage has been "attacking" female reporters on camera for years without so much a warning.

It does seem a little harsh and unfair.I suppose its more to set an example down on someone about these rape jokes, sadly I guess Torres just doesn't have the same star power as someone like Griffin,Evans and Rampage.Doesn't look like we'll ever see Faber vs. Torres now.

It just shows how high "Do you draw?" and "Are you cool with Dana?" are on the UFC's flowchart for disciplinary action. Forrest Griffin tweets a rape joke: Has a job 1 month later; Miguel Torres tweets a rape joke: Unemployment line the next day.

Hell even forget Rampage's dry humping on reporters, the dude caused an abortion with his truck and went on a literal rampage running from the police and still got to keep his job.If only Torres made 200k more and Joe Silva actually was considering him in title contention.Sad part is from what I hear,it wasn't even his joke, he was just quoting a joke from It's always sunny in Philadelphia I hear.

Yeah thats what I heard he was just quoting " Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia." This is bullshit! Dana White is so fucking stupid sometimes.

Yeah this is the first time ive been legitimately pissed at dana and his bullshit. fucking rashad the asshole says hes going to do worse than what sandusky did to those other kids at penn state, at a fox presser and he fires miguel? fuck that guy.
Im admittedly a big torres fan so im biased but i find it completely hypocritcal to conduct what he touts as the most valuable sports entity in the world like a high school clique.
Its a goddamned quote from a comedy show.

The other part that really puts it over the top for me is the UFC gives financial incentives for twitter popularity and runs contests. They are directly pushing wild tweets from their fighters. The day before rogan tweets "where was this hooker when i was 13" about the school teacher banging (legally raping) the kid in texas. The guy is THE biggest fuckin hyprocrit in sports.

I love mma, I got my mom to order the ppv for the first ufc when i was in middle school and have been watching since. I wont be purchasing a ppv in 2012.

Yeah it is pretty lame. Pretty fucking stupid of Dana. First he awards Condit a title shot and then takes that way and gives it to Nick Diaz again (which at one point Dana said he really doubts Nick will ever fight in the UFC) I guess this doesn't really matter that much anymore since GSP is out for a while anyway.

Then we got this whole rape shit. Forrest and Rashad do the same exact thing, except on a bigger scale. Nothing is done to them, but he downright FIRES Torres? What the fuck? A SUSPENSION or something of the sort would have been adequate, but to completely give him the boot is absurd. It's pretty ridiculous honestly.

I started watching Torres when he was Champ in WEC. I took even more interest when I found out he actually lives/lived 5 houses down from me. He's got a gym about 10 miles from here but I've never gone to check it out personally since I don't train MMA. Overall, it is pretty disappointing and I am hoping Dana reconsiders this decision. Since Torres barely makes it on the main card these days, it will probably be tough though. D:

remember when rogan proclaimed that machida era? I feel bad for the guy
jones is gonna chase this running asshole into a corner and flying round house kick him

Two great main events and a really good event overall.. And holy crap at these Brazilians rather getting their arms snapped or going to sleep before tapping. They're some tough SOBs.

Damn...that was one of the best UFC's I've seen in a long time! So many finishes tonight! Tito got smashed, Frank Mir showed Big Nog why you tap, and Jon Jones continues to destroy anything in front of him. My favorite part of that fight (in retrospect...at the time, it was making me nervous, lol) was the only reason Machida was even in the fight was because Jones allowed him to be. He could have muscled Machida and taken him down 10 seconds into that fight. Instead, he screwed with him to make him think he had a chance...before finally choking him out like a fucking assassin, lol. The Muhammad Ali of MMA. We're witnessing it now.

Big speculation that Overeem is out of UFC 141. Overeem has supposedly pulled out of his camp.

I try to only post rumors that have a lot of speculation from a lot of credible people. Just made the rounds that, supposedly, Overeem has a meeting with the NSAC on Monday. That's never a good thing.

What the fuck.

So who steps in if that's true? If they want to stick with the "giants" theme...Nelson maybe? Is he still with UFC? Not nearly as imposing as Overeem obviously but that's the best I can think of. A lot of people are saying Mir but...really? On like two week notice, after he just fucking fought tonight and was practically knocked unconscious? I'm all for Brock/Mir 3 eventually but not like this.

Hope that isn't true.

Edit - Dana is denying it, but who knows when it comes to that scumbag. We'll see I guess.

Bloodstain Lane is pretty spot-on with his sources. The only speculation I'd post on here comes from either him or Front Row Brian. We'll see what happens today. I'd put money on Mir-Lesnar 3. It's the UFC's New Year's Eve show and Mir-Lesnar 3 would be a moneymaker.

Hats off to Dana and Lorenzo for helping Dan Miller. And big ups for everyone else who donated. :)
"NSAC asks Overeem: 'You used to fight at 205, now you fight at 255. What's up with that?'"

Shit just got real.
Morons imo.
Morons imo.
Bahahaha... The NSAC is undoubtedly filled with people I question.

But, Japan's testing has been notoriously fraudulent. Lots of PRIDE guys were on PEDs.

And, bam, Overeem pulls a Tebow and is licensed to fight Lesnar at UFC 141.

"@arielhelwani Here's what Overeem is facing: The test within 72 hours, a test when he lands in the U.S. for 141, and then two random tests after 141."

Here's hoping that Overeem passes those tests. In any event, I suspect Overeem gets cut if he loses to Lesnar. We shall see!

Overeem won't fail any of the drug tests, he doesn't fail the tests, he knows how to get around them...of course, horse meat isn't illegal so... (hehehe).

So I'm just a marginal UFC fan, and fast forwarded everything else on the PPV, but the Mir-Nog fight was GRUESOME! I know a tiny bit of BJJ, so to see that technical finish was incredible. The snap I thought was a dislocated shoulder, but apparently they were right, broken arm. I couldn't watch more than one replay on that. Nasty.

The Jones fight was my first time seeing him, and while it started a little slow, again, technical mastery to finish it off. I've never seen a half choke, half standing guillotine like that. Also thoroughly impressed. A couple of great fights that belonged on a PPV.

Well, technically the choke was completely a standing Guillotine, but the way he finished it was somewhat unique. Using his hand to drive up his other, choking arm/hand is a bit different from what I saw, say, Chris Weidman choke out Bongfeldt with.

Hehehe... Horse meat indeed. Where's the picture of Overeem as a minotaur when you need it? ;)

Hey, welcome. :) I'm inclined to recommend watching all of Jon Jones' UFC fights. There aren't many, so it shouldn't take too long. His progress is incredible. His career in 2011 is easily the greatest year for any fighter in the history of MMA.

http://www.sherdog.net/forums/f2/ufc-140-ppv-buys-480k-1929531/

UFC 140 did— Get this— 480,000 buys. In a year of weak PPV buyrates, that number is pretty crazy. I think by the end of 2012, Jones will draw big, St-Pierre-and-Lesnar-type numbers.

A lot of people don't like Jones, but you can't argue with his success and the entertainment of his fights. I think he has the full potential to turn into a GSP/Lesnar-like fighter as well, and even though he will probably dominate guys like A. Silva does at MW, Jones is more exciting in doing it right now.

So Dana a week later after firing Torres for a rape joke, makes a prison rape joke insult himself towards someone through twitter.I guess we can really expect his resignation anytime now......

Either he resigns or rehires Torres with a "No rape jokes" stipulation. This is why you start with the fines and then escalate into terminations.

It will probably fall into the same category of "It was acceptable because of the context" that Forrest's rape joke went to but quoting a TV show inexplicably did not.

..fucking Dana White...

Shaking my head at posters at other boards defending Dana. Somehow the figurehead of the company making a personal attack on another person implying prison rape is less offensive and damaging to the company than a fighter telling a rape joke. Really? REALLY??

Sometimes, it's really difficult to support Dana. Ugh.

Machida has said that if he doesn't beat Jones in a rematch, he'll drop to 185. That's pretty crazy considering how big he is. And, if Silva is still fighting, we definitely won't see Silva-Machida—though I think Machida has a good chance in winning if he counter-strikes and grounds Silva. But, Silva is Silva. Outside of ducking Chael and Jones, he is a tremendous fighter.

Edit: What mysterious illness is keeping Silva out for 9 months? Bursitis.

Hmm...

Silva's not exactly young you know, he's like 36 nearly 37 and has been fighting for a long time. Getting more injury prone it seems.

As far as Machida, he can't make 185, at least not without cutting off an arm. He's too big for that weight, way too big. I think he could still do well at 205 even if he can't be champion. I guess he wants to move down to 185 and beat up a ton of bums there?
Tons of changes to upcoming cards today. gonzaga is back in, replacing rob broughton. Always liked him.
Gonzaga had all the talent but his weak chin and inability to use his great grappling has cost him basically his career. I'm surprised he's getting another shot in the UFC, will have to see who he is fighting.
