MMA (UFC, Strikeforce, Bellator, Invicta, etc.) Discussion Thread -- Version II

LMAO...finally! Who would have thought that being a cocky piece of shit would eventually catch up with you? I really don't want to hear this G.O.A.T shit anymore. The G.O.A.T doesn't disrespect the sport and make a joke out of everything.

The worst part is Dana has already promised him an immediate rematch...even though this performance clearly doesn't deserve one. He basically got a free pass for this fight.

LOL...so Silva doesn't care about the belt anymore? What the fuck? Yeah, I get people have been hounding him for the superfights with GSP and Johnny Bones, but he's got 7 more fights on his deal outside of those...making almost $1 million per fight. He gets a huge pay raise and now all of a sudden he doesn't care? Can't wait to hear how Dana feels about that.

Definitely a surprise finish but that's what happens when you act like an idiot.

Where is the GSP announcement?

Honestly, the worst part about it is this is the kind of stuff that opens up discussions for fights being "rigged" or fighters throwing fights for betting purposes. Think of the money Silva fucked with by acting like this. I don't care how skilled he is. It's not good for the sport.

I'm kinda mixed. On one hand, glad that Weidman got the win because of Silva's clowning. On the other hand, the same reason Anderson lost kinda cheapens the win; for a title fight, Silva wasn't really "trying"... so the win isn't as impressive as it is...fitting...I guess. With the way Silva has been acting lately, with the fact he's got a shiny new 10 fight contract (can the UFC even terminate it early?) plus the 600k "thanks for showing up" paycheck, he's just phoning it in at this point.

yeah i hope the way he acted doesn't cheapen chris's win. it should solidify it. anderson's bs'ing didn't faze him like anderson's previous victims. people are gonna complain and make up conspiracy theories, but let them whine. anderson silva is still my favorite fighter, but weidman doesn't bs around in the octagon. the new champ deserves all of his success.

Why would the way Silva acted cheapen Weidman's win?  That's how Silva always fights, and it has always worked for him up until now.  People are making WAY too much of this fight.  Weidman scored a huge upset, won the fight, and is now the champ.  Anderson's antics in the ring and motivation going into the fight are irrelevant.  He lost, plain and simple, and his 6+ years of defending his title are over.

I'm disappointed Silva lost, I'm a big fan.  I don't always love his antics in the octogon, but I do love his crafty dodging and ability to finish fights in the most exciting of ways.  His "hands down head dodging" was bound to catch up to him at some point, and tonight it did.  I hope he comes back a little bit more disciplined, but at his age, I think it's possible that Silva's reign is truly over.

Personally I'm not a big fan of instant rematches.  The lightweight division was plagued with them a couple years ago (and the only one that should have been was after the Edgar/Maynard draw) and all it does is clutter up the weight division.  As a Silva fan, I'd be happy for him to get another title shot right away.  But I don't feel like he deserves one.

Link to the end of the main event:

.... Seriously though. That was a joke. IDK if the fix was in or not or Spider just got rocked, but this is really bad PR for the sport.

Let me preface this by saying I am in now way suggesting or believe that Anderson threw the fight. I am just talking about his approach to the fight itself.

His "hands down head dodging" was bound to catch up to him at some point, and tonight it did.
And that's why I feel that it takes away at least a little bit from Weidman's win. The way Anderson fights as of late isn't the way you're supposed to fight and get away with it. It's like he's fighting at 80% effort because he can, and doesn't need to put the other 20% forward, because hey, I'm Anderson fucking Silva.

I do admit that Anderson makes it impressive when he wins by fighting that way, but on the same token, when someone loses because of their antics, it's also fitting. Seeing that fight makes me think of Overeem/Bigfoot; the fight was Overeem's, no question, until his antics got the better of him in the third.

In my mind, I'm processing the result of the fight as Anderson lost the title because of his own actions, rather than Chris winning the fight because he is more skillful. It just leaves a big "what-if" floating out there...if Anderson had fought seriously and without the taunting.

At least I won $5 off my friend betting against Chris Leben.

Also nice to see Frankie in the win column again.  The Barboza finish was cool too.  Except for his unexpected loss to Varner, I think that guy is a major threat at 155.

Yeah, it's kind of weird to hear Dana talk about it at the post fight press conference like he did. The UFC really seemed to take a turn with Anderson after Fedor finally lost, where they 100% started referring to Silva as "the greatest fighter ever". Before that, Dana really got on him about not engaging fighters or not trying his best in the fight. I guess you can argue that the fight with Weidman was different, but that definitely wasn't the best Anderson Silva he can be.

Whether you defend it with "Oh, he does that all the time" or "He's won fights by doing that", last night just went too far. It's one thing to keep your hands down and demoralize your opponent with the fact that he still can't touch you. But to allow him to hit you, act "pretend hurt", fake wobbly legs, etc. crosses a line of treating him like a 5 year old. That's the kind of stuff you do when you're "play fighting" with a kid. Either Anderson was confident enough that he could get away with it, and that Weidman's striking posed no threat to him. Or, he was so apathetic toward the fight, that the possibility of losing really didn't even bother him that much. His comments afterward would seem to indicate the latter, but I don't know...that just seems crazy to me.

The topic of respect also came up numerous times, and I get what Dana was saying of "You're trying to knock your opponent out, you're trying to rip his arm off, etc...but don't disrespect him." But if you're behaving as though your opponent is not a threat, or that it's a joke that he's in there with you, how are people supposed to perceive it? It sure as hell is not going to make you likable. And I do think it casts the sport in a bad light. There are posts all over the internet questioning the legitimacy of the fight...and while that may be a ridiculous accusation, you can't blame people for having doubts about something that looked like a freak show to begin with.

It's pretty obvious that Dana is not happy at all with Anderson losing...but ultimately, Anderson does what Anderson wants to do. In a way, he's almost a Manny Ramirez kind of personality. You never know which Anderson is going to show up. Even the responses he was giving at the press conference didn't answer what was being asked most of the time...which makes his actions look even more odd. I realize the UFC wants to just ride his "greatest fighter ever" image as long as they can...but it might honestly be in their best interest to just let him distance himself for a while, and see if he ever actually regains any hunger to be great again. Because he really made it sound like he's just been going through the motions.

I say this as the most casual of casual fans, but if you're going to go into a championship fight and are considered one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, fighters of all time, you absolutely deserve to get your teeth knocked down your throat if you're going to dance around like an idiot for a round and a half after getting pummeled on the ground 30 seconds in.

I'm almost surprised it wasn't called earlier on Silva not even defending himself. It only makes your challenger look weak and makes the sport look bad. That type of behavior has no place in UFC; I understand that Dana wants to put on a show at the level of pro wrestling, but leave the amateur unprofessional bullshit to bar fights and the Diaz brothers.

I absolutely despise instant rematches.  The ONLY time I'm ok with them is on a no contest or weird DQ type situation.  If Silva gets an immediate rematch it basically makes a mockery of the division and the sport.  Seriously, what the fuck has Anderson done to deserve that???  Wearing clown shoes in the Octagon = Immediate rematch???

Weird.  But he was being super sarcastic for a lot of the interview.  He seems like a weird guy.

Anderson puts on a show and had stated multiple times in the past that Weidman "needs to work on his standup". He never felt threatened and it's stupid to suggest that he was throwing the fight or not putting any effort in. He got caught, as he does sometimes, and just happened to get caught by a decent puncher with a perfect shot. To his credit though, Weidman has improved tenfold since his debut in the UFC and keeps getting better in every fight. Top notch wrestling, elite BJJ, solid punching power and rapidly refined striking; Weidman's going to be a tough guy to beat.

Now, that being said I think Bisping and Belfort give him trouble. Belfort only because he may stomp Weidman quickly with something big (but would probably be taken down and whooped) and Bisping because he can outrun just about everyone in the UFC, but is liable to get knocked out.

TJ Grant out, Pettis in for UFC 164.

Saw this one coming from 100 miles away.  Fight should be good, but the way it all got set up reeks.  Miraculous "recovery" by Pettis there...

Weidman vs Silva II has been confirmed for UFC 168 in December at the MGM Grand. I was kind of hoping Anderson would move up to LHW or something and try something different. If he ends up beating Weidman it will pretty much come down to both of them fighting one fight and then if Weidman wins he will get a title shot yet again. There is no one in 185 that I want to see Anderson fight. Weidman holding the belt opens up the division a lot more. Eh, guess we have to wait and see what happens in December.

More dead: Bellator as a promotion or this thread?

Okay set of fights yesterday. I had been down on both Ellenberger and MacDonald, but, in hindsight, Ellenberger is entirely to blame for that lackluster fight. While not entirely interesting, Rory followed his instructions and embarrassed his opponent. Jake did almost nothing, which is disappointing, as Canadian Zoolander's chin is still suspect after getting hurt with one punch by a mediocre journeyman like Che Mills. However, no matter who he faces, I think Rory Mac is too smart/committed to brawl. A rematch with Condit would be the best bet to see if MacDonald has the tenacity to overcome hard, precise killshots.

As for the rest of the card, DJ's speed and wrestling is outrageous. I want to eventually see a rematch with Dodson, because I think Dodson will improve, and if he does, he has the power, resiliency, and speed to put DJ in trouble. In their first fight, his inexperience got the better of him, but he did legitimately knockdown Johnson a few times. Lineker, a rematch with McCall, and a rematch with Benavidez should be on the horizon if all three of them continue to win. However, outside of these four, the UFC truly needs to sign more flyweights. Only 16 in the entire division with only 4 or 5 as viable title contenders.

Mighty Mouses takedowns were extremely swift and well disguised.  I'm not a huge fan, but I was the most impressed with him last night.

Basically, my thoughts as well. Ellenberger needs to get his shit together and decide if he ever wants to be a contender. He never really brought the fight to Rory, and Rory just coasted to an easy win and moved another rung up the ladder toward being "GSP's successor". If you're billed as "a wrestler", you better bring the damn wrestling. Because if it's all you have, it needs to be insane. Kinda like...

Demetrious Johnson! It almost seemed like the fight might be close until Mighty Mouse remembered "Oh yeah! I'm a ridiculous wrestler, and I can just slam this guy down over and over and over again." The flipside of the wrestling coin...if you cannot stop the takedown, you don't deserve to be standing. Future opponents (including John Dodson), make a mental note.

And just to spice things back up in here...in case anyone hasn't seen this yet.

Ronda's tenacity and intensity are impressive to me.  She comes off like that in every competitive or athletic situation Ive seen her in, shes a beast.

As for DJ's wrestling, he always looks like that, his timing is ridiculous. He rubbed me wrong after the torres fight and I havent cared for him personally since, but he is incredible.  His quickness and timing are a sight. The kid yamamoto fight is where I thought his wrestling really started to shine (I havent seen any of his fights pre-wec).  That division, being so small, is at a rough spot, like its been pointed out, hes beaten the real elite of that division.

Ok...so on one hand, Phil Davis had no business winning that fight. On the other hand, I'm over Lyoto Machida and his pussyfooting "I'm only going to attack if you fuck up" style. THIS is supposed to be the #1 challenger to Jon Jones??? GTFO! If Machida came in the octagon against Jones fighting like that, he'd just get prison choked again. So, even though Davis didn't deserve that win, I say good for him as it at least gives Jones a new opponent to thrash. Just like the Henderson/Evans fight before it, neither one of them did a damn thing that would indicate that they deserve a title shot. "Next up for the champion...an opponent who barely squeaked out a win in his last fight!" Damn, that sounds exciting.

Yeah I had Machida 2-1, my friend gave all 3 rounds to Machida.  The fact that Davis won that fight in Brazil is really surprising to me.  I was cheering for Davis but when Bruce Buffer announced Phil Davis as the winner I was more than a little shocked.

That being said, I agree with you n8.  I was never interested in Machida/Jones 2, I want to see Jones take on every major contender in the weight class before he starts giving guys 2nd chances.  I think Gustafson, Texiera, and now Davis all deserve a shot, though I don't think any of them will actually win.  I don't think Machida would have stood a chance against Jones either.  Like n8, I'm starting to get sick of his style.

I think Phil Davis presents a little bit of a different style for Jones to deal with, and would be interested to see the fight if it ever takes place.  I think a lot of the LHW mainstays are on the way out (Rampage and Griffin are long gone.  I don't think Henderson, Rua, Evans, or Machida are legit threats to Jon Jones.  Jones already proved that with 3 of them.)

As for the main event, it was pretty meh.  Shame that Korean Zombie had his shoulder get dislocated, but he wasn't going to win the fight anyway.  So really it just meant I got home from Buffalo Wild Wings about 10 minutes earlier.  I still wish this fight was Aldo/Pettis.

Rest of the card was already.  Perosh beating Vinny was cool, I always love seeing Brazilians lose at home.  I'm happy Uncle Creepy won.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet (or maybe it goes to show how little anybody cares), but headlining Bellators first PPV event in November will be Rampage vs. Tito Ortiz.

It's ridiculous that idiots are blaming Machida for incompetent judging. Sometimes, MMA fans are the worst.
I don't "blame" Machida, but his fighting style does suck and I like it when he loses. His style definitely leaves things up in the air, that's for sure.

Yeah, I don't blame him either. It's just sad that I don't see the point in awarding him a win that he deserved. Because even if he outpointed Davis, that fight shouldn't earn him a title shot. I just don't look at a fight like that and see "hungry fighter". I see cautious, timid, "Am I ahead?" fighter. And there's no way in hell you beat Jon Jones fighting like that.

Machida can occasionally be boring but so was Muhammad Ali (not a direct comparison, just saying). What Machida does is skillful and masterful, if you don't like it, stop him from doing it like Rua did. Otherwise, he'll keep whooping the asses of people like Phil Davis, who did NOT win that fight.

I have no idea who he is, but he actually changed his name to War Machine? WTF?

Also, he's dating Christy Mack? Double WTF!
War Machine is the King of Social Media

- Heavily suggesting Evan Tanner committed suicide on his MySpace was a factor his release from UFC.

- Posting a comment about hoping somebody would assassinate Obama got him removed from Bellator's tournament before even participating.

- Got himself blackballed from the porn industry for assaulting a few guests at a starlet's party. Posted on twitter basically admitting to it and that he was going to jail if they could catch him (which they did).

- Got invited back to Bellator somehow and goes on to make a tweet heavily implying he just raped his girlfriend. Accuses people of being thin-skinned, taking things out of context, and attempting to demonize him despite spending a good portion of the past three years in jail for various assault and battery convictions.

He's stupid but he attracts attention, and clearly his tweet wasn't meant to mean "rape" in the same sense that most people think of the word. He's a weird guy though, mental with some screws loose. Maybe soon, within 10 years I'm sure, he'll be back in jail for something more serious.

I for one question why you would want your kids to train at his academy?

Dominick Cruz sets to make his return "early next year" He's got his eyes set on Renan Barao. Really? The guy's about to defend the Interim belt for the second time and you "have your eyes set on him"? Had Faber beat Barao and taken the Interim belt I can almost guarantee Cruz would have been stripped and Dana would have marketed Faber as the "undisputed champion" Barao is not a big name in UFC. If he happens to lose to Wineland his shot at Cruz will be lost. Barao has been wanting to keep active and that is definitely champ material IMO.

The running of Cruz is never to be underestimated. He will have been out for a long time when he fights Barao though, and this could be a grand opportunity for Barao to win a fight he may not have been able to if Cruz was fresh

Chael P. Sonnen...son! lol. Shogun is so shot, man. No cardio, no takedown defense, and apparently, his submission defense is on the decline as well. They always bring up how young he still is too. But I'll tell ya, they're not doing him any favors. It was also nice to see Chael remember that he's a wrestler. He had no chance against Jon Jones. But I actually think he could handle a decent number of guys at 205. I think he'd beat Machida...and I think a fight against Dan Henderson would be really interesting. Hendo hasn't wrestled in forever, but Chael would definitely make him find out if he still can.

Loved the prelims and main card. Overeem being owned and Sonnen whooping ass ruled. Him completely ripping off Superstar Graham...again was also amusing.

Some highlights -

Sonnen beats up on Wanderlei, but struggles immensely against Machida due to the slick takedown defense that Machida has. Henderson shouldn't earn a shot at Sonnen considering their stature in the division right now, but if it did happen I'd definitely favor Sonnen to expose Henderson's always questionable takedown defense.

As far as Shogun, he has been seriously faded for years. A shell of his former self, he never had good takedown defense or exceptional grappling. Chael was just the fighter to exploit that.

I have made $$$ with Matt Brown since his fight with Stephen Thompson and I'll ride him until he falls. Give him Condit or Kampmann or MacDonald. Someone in the Top 5. He deserves it. His story surpasses that of the #RallyForMarkHunt hype. It's all about the #MattBrownPride.

Sonnen would beat Wanderlei, but, apparently, he accepted a fight with Belfort, who is much more dangerous. Sonnen will have to TRT up, otherwise he has little chance against the lab project.
