I agree, and the inenvitable over-confidence that comes with being so successful for so long. It's the type of thing that makes me wonder if maybe 0-6 Miami might beat New England this Sunday. I doubt it, but you never know.
What why I think the one loss to New York and the (at least) one loss to Boston is good for Cleveland. It keeps them honest and reminds them that they're not just the be-all, end-all of baseball and have some weaknesses they need to be mindful of.
I must say, I love that it looks to be that the 3rd lowest payroll and the 7th lowest payroll in baseball will be going head to head in the world series. Can anyone enlighten me as to how that works exactly? How does one team get to spend on average of 7+ million on each player, and another team can only spend 14+ million on the whole team? Is each team just a for-profit company that can generate extra money for players via tickets, merchandise, etc.?
It depends on the owner and whether they want to put much money into the team or just not care about the salary cap. Cleveland, Colorado, Florida, and many others refuse to put a lot into the team, so they have to develop their talent instead of buying it. If you're over the salary cap, all that happens is that you get a fine, which is why New York and Boston (I think they're over the cap) can just pay and can just afford to keep those expensive players happy.
