Julio Lugo and J.D. Drew have dragged this team down since opening day. Coco Crisp needs to go, too, but at least they probably won't have to pay someone to take him.
But of course, Francona would never play Ellsbury over Coco, as he didn't play Youkilis over Kevin Millar while he was here, and hitting under the Mendoza line for about 6 months.
drew was playing very very well the first month or so...manny and pappi weren't, it was drew carrying the team....
Youkillis at the time was a 3b, so he would have had to play of mueller. Sorry, I wouldn't have done that either. Now John Orleud (in the 05 season) I would have played over millar every day. As for Youk, yes he is crusing the ball in this playoffs, but he hit around .220 from july on. He was horrible. He was batting around .335 or so, and dropped to the high .280's. This is when we needed him to hit as the yanks climbed about 12 games on us in the standings. Boston fans love him, he is good, but no where around the ability boston fans think he is. He doesn't have power, he has limited range at 1b, he doesn't have speed. And oh yeah he doesn't walk much for a guy called the greek god of walks. If they could get a big 1b, I would move his sorry ass as well. He isn't a prototypical 1b or 3b. We complain about not having a true 5 hole guy in the lineup, well it is because 1b or 3b should hit for power and neither do. That is why we are stuck without a true 5 hole hitter. Yes, lowell has done great here this year, but he would look better batting 6th.
Personally I would prefer Drew was traded, and keep cocco. Yes you would pay a large chunk of the salary but you would get more in return. We are paying cocco to hit roughly .280 - .300, steal some bases, and play good defense in cf. We the only thing he didn't due throughout the season is hit the min of .280. He did hit .270, which I am fine with. It is really too bad what has happened to him in Boston. When we picked him up, it was all positive attention on him, and he smoked the ball in spring training, the first 4 or 5 games or so he was ripping the shit out of the ball and sb left and right. He slid into 3b in Balt and broke something in his hand. He has never ever swung the bat with as much authority/power as he did before the injury. Now it seems he has accepted that he is going to be dumped and has already mentally checked out of Boston.
Another thing that has been really quiet lately, is there is 1 year left on Manny's contract, who is to say they don't dump him, and move cocco over to his spot. If I were theo or terry, I would have
en killed manny on 2 plays last night. The first was when he was jogging to 1b early in the game. He could/should have been at 2b, even with his speed. He ended up getting thrown out at the plate (and he should have either slid or tagged the catcher rather then slow down and let the martinez tag you). That cost us a run there, and then his lonest single later on in the game. Yes he puts up big numbers, but come on, he has to piss off team members with the shit he pulls about just playing the game, never mind his rare but usually stupid comments to the press, and his other oddities he has. He cost them a run last night with his laziness early in the game. What if the sox lost by a run? I would dump him, try to sign Arod, dump lugo, and resign lowell. You would still have 2 guys with a lot of speed. Our 3 - 5 batters would be pappi, arod, lowell. Leadoff would be ellsbury, pedroia bats 2nd, pappi, arod, lowell, youk, drew (if we still have him), varitek, cocco.
