HALO2 Multiplayer Tricks of the Trade Section!

1. Unless you have to, don't use 2 weapons of the same type( 2 unsc or 2 plasma) because the plasma takes down shields faster and unsc tears through flesh faster. a double plasma or double unsc will always lose to a plasma rifle smg combo unless there is a big skill difference.

2. If you are in a large level, try not to go in the middle of the level or stop moving(unless the game type demands this) because there is most definitely a sniper somewhere looking for an easy kill.

3. If you see 3 players from the other team, don't attack because you WILL die. (obvious)

4. The shotgun is unbelievably weak at anything but extreme close range, I you have one change weapons if you go outdoors.

5. If you have to reload in the middle of a fight and you have a dual wieldable combination drop a weapon then reload your smg because a single smg reloads in 2 seconds while a 2x smg reloads in 4.5 seconds. REMEMBER THIS!!

6. Never brandish your sword until you need to use it. all it does is mark you for snipers and other players since you are a one hit kill machine. also, they will back up when you go at them, in halo 2, you run at the same speed backwards than forwards unlike in halo 1. for some reason, players go TOWARDS you when you have plain weapons out. exploit this and take out your sword when it is too late for them to run away.

7. Don’t underestimate the plasma pistol. the rate at which it lowers shields with its power shot is amazing

8. Know the Maps!!!!!! memorize all the weapon locations and good sniping locations are, where the vehicles are, what paths to take on assault, ctf etc...

9. Communication is a must. but don't talk about your objective out in the open. Be wary of recons.

10. Always get a rocket launcher. if you see it take it. unless you have a teammate then tell them to take it. there is no reason not to have it

11. Don't go commando or sacrifice yourself unless this is a strategy you worked out. Keeping the opponents distracted while the rest of the team works around the back.

12. Those who “Stay together, Slay Together”. its better to be in pairs then a lone gunman unless it is a non-team match

13. Do not publicly announce that you have the sword. keep the sword in reserve unless you get close enough to lunge. quickly switch back to your other weapon before people get wise.

14. Learn how to board a warthog when it goes full speed. this will greatly hinder your team if they have to stop mid battle to pick you up. this will help your team in attacking others and it looks damn cool to other people

15. Snipe constantly on coagulation. Alternate between the ramp on the side, the tunnels on the side, the rocks in the middle, and that place you fly the banshee to near the blue base. Works wonders.

16. Also on waterworks, fly the Banshee to the ramp on the big middle structure that goes up to the side. Get out and you can walk up it to the top. Very good sniper position.

17. I don’t see many people do this, but using "Proximity Voice" to your advantage is a HUGE help, especially on team skirmish, this one guy I play with uses it 24/7...

like one time a guy with a shotgun was chasing him up the stairs, and he gets up to (where the rocket launcher is) and he hides in a corner and says "Ah **** I fell off!"... what does the enemy do? he walks to the edge and starts looking down for him on the ground, so he pops out and assassinates him...

18. If you must take the Banshee…Then use it to shoot straight down on Wraiths….NEVER in front of them.

19. Always throw grenades if you are about to die. You never know, the enemy might get hit. Especially if you fighting close to each other. I feel the plasma grenade is one of the best weapons you can have. If you get good at sticking people you will be a force to reckon with. They're also great when someone’s coming directly at you with the sword. They're probably trying to get the one hit kill so they'll lunge in a straight line, if you are looking at them and have a plasma grenade just toss it straight. They may kill you with the strike, but they will die to and lose the sword.

20. On the “Waterworks” Map use the Wraith (or the Warthog but not as effective) to place the "big" blocks in front of the doors which will make it so the enemy can only get in through the top and exit through the top. this is really good for 12-minute rounds of neutral bomb

21. Don't hog the weapons if you aren't any good with them. If you're in a team game and you are a decent sniper you could use it but it should used by the better team sniper.

22. It's okay to run away. I've seen it countless of times. People will attack opponents when they see them, are at a serious disadvantage, and have the chance to run away. Retreat, get a better weapon or a teammate and then go attack.

23. When you are playing 1 flag ctf on Zanzibar and you are on offense, make sure none of your teammates open the gate, then run in, grab the flag, run over to the gate and just drop the flag there. Then have someone else run up to the gate from the outside and pick up the flag through the gate. This gives you a lot of time to get the flag back to your base.
[This is a glitch and may be fixed soon]

24. IF YOU DUCK….THE MOTION DETECTOR CAN’T SEE YOU. I CANT STRESS THIS ENOUGH!!!!

25. The Carbine or Battle Rifle can save you from a sniper in a pinch, if you have a sniper shooting you (and your lucky enough not to be killed by the first shot) zoom in on them and start firing, remember if you hit someone who’s zoomed in it boots them from the zoom, which means all you got to do is hit them every once in awhile so they cant zoom and shoot you, this has saved me numerous times

26. When it comes to sniping I suggest moving a lot when your sniping (especially if your in a game with a lot of people) because people tend to focus on snipers and all it takes is 1 shot to have everyone know where you are. Also un-zoom and check your motion detector every once in awhile so you don’t get whacked in the back of the head.

27. If someone is lucky enough to jack you of your vehicle its extremely easy to stick a plasma grenade to it as they are driving away from you, that’s usually the first thing I do when I get car jacked....or if you got stuck on a wall....and then they jacked you, chances are that they will take a second to get out from the wall...jack them back!

28. If someone is Jacking your car....run it headfirst into the wall (or in a corner is better)....its a pain in the ass to move it back out.

29. If you have a sword and an SMG, walk with the SMG. People will attack you differently than if you have a sword with you. Let them get closer and quickly pop out the sword. Bye, Bye = Enemy. This is very important.

30. If you see someone that has spotted you(if he's at a decent distance), walk around a corner and wait for him to come. He will think you didn’t see him and 9 out of 10 times people would follow you. Grab a sword/shotgun/rocket to sweep him off the ground.

31. You can kill people through the floors of the bases. If you're able to acquire the rocket launcher, you can clear defenders of their base without ever having to go inside it. Get underneath their base (where you can catch the boost up) and fire rockets at the floor of the room with the flag. Through the little glass window in the floor, you'll be able to see the flag, and you may be able to see people defending. If you can see people through the floor and shoot right where they're standing, it'll kill them through the floor. If you don't know where they're at, use all your rockets to shoot various parts of the floor. Even if it doesn't kill them, they'll receive splash damage and that should weaken them enough that you and other players on your team can then go inside and quickly mop up the "Now" weakened defenders.
[This "maybe" a glitch and may be fixed soon]

32. This is specifically for Coagulation. The Rocket Launcher is key. Because this map always has vehicles, it's a good idea to send a guy closest to a Ghost to go dash to the middle, pick up the Rocket Launcher and the spare ammo, and get back to base, NOT STAY OUT IN THE OPEN!

33. Learn how to fight in a Ghost. Especially on levels like Waterworks, Coagulation and Zanzibar. Practice strafing and circling around your enemy while shooting. It's not like the Warthog where the gauss cannon or machine gun shoots fast rounds. The plasma is slow. Also practice this, a Ghost duel. Get a friend in a Ghost, and you get in another Ghost. Practice circling around the Ghost and shooting it. You have to aim in front of your opponent as you strafe and circle their Ghost. I can't tell you how many Ghosts I've destroyed because my opponent hasn't understood the physics of the plasma from the Ghost.

34. The plasma pistol takes out a full shield, even the Over-shield. (Thanks Trakan!)

35. You can drive a Warthog under the base (where the Banshee is) and pull the flag to you from the under the floor, by jumping on top of the hog and looking up....then drop down and get in the hog.... Oh yeah, and backing the hog in, doesn’t work....just turn the camera around 180 and go forward....pressing the Left trigger for the handbrake off and on. It'll make you do a quick 180....take the flag out and go for the score!
[This is a glitch and may be fixed soon]

36. NEVER and I mean NEVER!!1!!11! Take the Hog anywhere near a Wraith...you will never win. Ever. The hog is a defensive/carrier for the flag....don’t expect it to be much more than that....just take the flag and go back to base away from the Wraith. You'll be able to out run any Wraith Plasma shell coming your way. (Unless they lead you really well, of course ;-))

37. Ghost Battling tactics: Things to remember when Ghost Driving.

a. Always keep moving, never stop EVER!

b. Try to run them over with the Boost (Right Trigger) 1st....if you don’t succeed with a kill, keep driving with the boost and swing around. Don’t stop and try to do a 180.

c. If you don’t run them over, on your next go-around, shoot them and sway side to side....never stopping, not even a little....Circling is usually the best tactic, but mix it up so they don’t lead you.

d. Don’t try to fight more than 2 people in a Ghost. You have about a 15% chance of winning that battle. 1 person = 85% chance of winning, 2 people = 45% chance of beating both and deduct 30% for every number of people after that.

e. In COAG going full speed you are almost impossible to kill! Remember that like your digital life depended on it. Cause it does.

f. A ghost is stronger than a Banshee's firepower, and weaker than a Warthog. A lot of people come straight at you with a Banshee, let them... :)

g. Circle Wraiths at close range.(Thanks jlarlee!)

38. What it all means in the clan list.

In Menu - Means the person is in the Xbox Live Halo 2 menu. They are not in a game at all

Pregame Lobby - Means they are in the lobby before a matchmade game. People can join the party while they are in this.

Pregame Lobby(Not Joinable) - Means the person or party is looking for a matchmade game. They still have the opportunity to back out to the pregame lobby to let people in if they notice they are on.

Matchmade Game - There is no way to join at all until the match is over. Just send them a message letting them know to wait in the pregame lobby after the match because you want to join.

Custom Game - They are playing a custom game. Join them. (Thanks Zewone!)

39. When you grab the Over-shield and it's "Charging up".....you are Invincible for that time period. (Thanks Elrod!)

40. When arming a bomb in assault, crouch and look at the floor. This will more than likely prevent the bomb from leaving the arming circle if you are killed When the bomb leaves the arming circle the the arming time starts over. If it stays in the circle the time is cumulative. (Thanks Zewone!)

41. When you are about to pick up a weapon/board a vehicle, press and hold down the button "X" before you get to the item/board, that way you can board/pick up in stride. Nothing like a free kill of someone who is stopping to pick up a shotty. Not only that but you can latch on to a Warthog going full speed making it nice not having to stop. (Thanks Sying!)

42. The ghost is the fastest mode of transportation short of the transporter. In Waterworks/Coagulation you can get to a discrete area first , grab a Sniper Rifle/Rocket Launcher and bring it back to the base as well as being the eyes as a Scout. (Thanks Sying!)

43. What the Logo's mean over peoples head!

The logo is the Player's Custom Sig/Avatar/logo/flag (whatever) it also reacts and changes for certain situations. Another breakdown:

Red Highlight - They are being shot.

Yellow Highlight - They are shooting someone.

Flag/Bomb Next to Their Logo - They have the flag/bomb.

Red X - They were killed. (Thanks Zewone!)

44. Kill people with energy swords! NEW!!
If the Enemy has a energy sword and is fixing to perform the
lunge attack, quickly look at your feet, jump, and throw a grenade (plasma
perferable). If done correctly, they will miss and you will kill them with
a plasma grenade or lower there shields with a frag grenade. This'll take
some practice to get right because you have to be quick about it.

45. Snatchin vehicles with the plasma sword NEW!!
When carrying a plasma sword and you spot some vehicles, you can use a
very cool tactic. Watch as you opponent tries to mow you down, jump (or move sideways), try with the sword to get a lock, lunge, then when you get close enough, hold X. You have just boarded him from about 10 feet. Can save you sometimes in multiplayer.

46. Gettin the 'hog in Headlong on a high place NEW!!
Go to headlong, and get in a hog (i think it might only work with the gauss
one). Drive it up the launch ramp, and make a sharp right turn at the top
so you land on the dangling highway section. Now, turn the hog so that it's
facing the balance beam. Back up until the two back tires are just hanging
over the end, and slam on the gas. The motion forces the platform forward
into the beam. When they collide, the hog will snap forward and, with luck,
it will skid across the beam and onto the agacent tower. Now you can drive
the hog into any spot on either of the two buildings.

47. Vehicle Surfing NEW!!
In maps that use vehicles, its possible to ride on top of them without
entering. This is best accomplished by jumping on and staying
in the middle of the vehicle. The driver should avoid sharp turns as well.
This is really useful for capturing the flag.

48. Vehicle HWP Shot Table NEW!!
Number of shots to destroy a vehicle:

* Ghost - rocket x1, gauss x1, grenade x1, sniper rifle x8
* Spectre - rocket x1, gauss x2, grenade x2, shotgun x6 (close)
* Warthog - rocket x1, gauss x2, grenade x2, shotgun x6 (close)
* Wraith - rocket x2, gauss x3 (front), gauss x2 (back), grenade x13, tank shot x2
* Scorpion - rocket x2, gauss x4 (body/tread), grenade x15, tank shot x2
* Banshee - rocket x1, tank shot x1, shotgun x6, brute shot x4 (impact)

49. Destroy the Ghost NEW!!
Facing the Ghost from behind, to the left, behind the left wing is an alien gas tank shaped like a circle. It's only on the left side. Shoot it 3 times with pistol or 1 time with the shotgun and say good bye to it.

50. Brute-Shot POWAR!! NEW!!
The melee attack is almost as powerful as the energy-sword....now you understand the blade on the but of it??

Thank you for reading and helping me to 50 tips....heres to 50 more.

Weapon Placement Map for Waterworks.

31, 32 will be most useful.

On coagulation you can also park a warthog under the base and grab the flag through the floor. That's if they don't blow up your warthog first.

That's a glitch that really should be fixed.

It is unbelievable how many people don't know the ducking to go off radar trick. even level 16-20 players don't know of it. It is such a valuable tactic to use for defense in 1 Flag CTF or assault.

Id like to add a bit on the ghost strat. When battling peopple always tryt o run them over first and never stop because it makes you a target for grenades also if you are shooting them and they rush you back up the ghost while still shooting at them. But especially in COAG going full speed you are almost impossible to kill.

Even better the second time around, mooky. Even more things to know.

We had that happen to us on Tuesday night. That was fscking ridiculous.

24. IF YOU DUCK….THE MOTION DETECTOR CANT SEE YOU. I CANT STRESS THIS ENOUGH!!!!
Actually, if you just stand still the motion detector won't see you...But you can move without being detected with the crouch-walk.

Nice list BTW.

oh and about the combo of weapons The normal pistol is a deadly ingredient especially in slayer type matches. Two quick shots from the pistol with shields down will kill someone

Fantastic List Mooky.
There is only one thing I would add (and I am not 100% positive that this is true):
It seems that when you first grab an overshield, you are invulnerable while it "powers up" (while the overshield is "growing" - graphicaly speaking). This lasts for a couple of seconds at the most. Not always a huge advantage, but it can mean the diference between life and death.

I don't think you mentioned that number 23 is a glitch. If the gate is closed and the flag is near enough to the outside than someone from the out can grab it. Halo 2 is not very good at knowing when there is a solid object between you and the item you are trying to grab. May I suggest another tatic:

When arming a bomb in assault, crouch and look at the floor. This will more than likely prevent the bomb from leaving the arming circle if you are killed When the bomb leaves the arming circle the the arming time starts over. If it stays in the circle the time is cumulative.

Yes, you are invincible when the overshield is powering up.

Good stuff, but I really wish people didnt do 15 (in bold) It really pisses me off when people camp there for the entire game. Yeah, I'll admit, I have gone up there and sniped a few, but I dont set up base there and for the entire game.

Great point while jumping around like a kangaroo may help you avoid a few shots it isn't worth the risk of the bomb leaving the circle

How about these tips

When you are about to pick up a weapon/board a vehicle, press X before you get to the item, that way you can board/pick up in stride. Nothing like a free kill of someone who is stopping to pick up a shotty.

Also the ghost is the fastest mode of transportation short of the transporter. In waterworks you can get to a discrete area first and be the eyes as a scout. A little Ghost Recon if you will (sorry, I couldn't resist).

That's awesome advice man. Thanks!

Great tips!!! Most of the strategy stuff I already knew, but some of the glitches are awesome... I'm going to have to try some of them out!

My contribution- don't forget the weakspot on the ghost. You can take one out with one shot if you hit it on that box area on the left hand side. I refer to it as the engine.

I think we should make it a point to note that if the bomb/flag is out in the middle of the area don't try to rush in after by yourself because if the other team is in position, they will cut people down one by one in a pretty vicious cycle, make it a point to stop and see if you can shoot somebody at a distance or try to draw one guy away from the area at a time, your no good if your helping provide a slaughter fest

This is some stuff I've learned/noticed:

Learn to circle strafe.

Block necessary teleporters when playing CTF games.

Don't go after the flag/bomb alone. Always have someone there to help you.

While traveling together, (as someone already said), you can jump on your teammate to reach a higher place.

When your friend's icon turns red, go and help him! (everyone should know that.)

Don't just play as one, play as a team and talk to your teammates.

Don't get both the camo and the overshield at the same time. The overshield makes you flashy and will make you visible even if you have the camo.

If you're getting shot at when you have the oddball/flag/bomb, drop it and fight.

If you have a rocket, and you're going to die, blow the oddball away before you die.

Rolling up to the other team's base with the Wraith and clearing out their entrance lobby with it seemed to work on Waterworks when I tried it Friday night. :D

you mean people didn't know this already? IKIK, nice list man. Can't wait till after christmass, then I can make a new XBL account!

I second the idea that the pistol should be mentioned. Most people (especially new players) don't realize how great it is. At short-mid range it, paired with pretty much anything else, is great, especially if you aim up (which the SMG will help you do automatically).

Also, you can grab the flags on Colossus from below. On the blue side just line up with the corner of the hall, jump up and yoink, red side is similar. This is, of course, a glitch that may/may not be fixed. Of note though, Bungie has said using a glitch is NOT cheating. While I don't agree, people need to at least be aware that this tactic is out there.

Lastly, good guide :)

I especially want people to realize how freaking fun it is to use proximity chat. There is NOTHING better than playing mind games with the other team. Yesterday I sat in the bottom of the red base on Beaver Creek for almost 3 minutes while holding the bomb because I kept saying I was somewhere else (roof, teleporter, etc.) It was great.

Ok here a tip I hate to give up.. but I like CAG and its members alot.. Although Ive never played with many of you guys... Im a avid reader of CAG and whatcha call a lurker..

heres my tip..
Remember that you need to be atleast 30 ft. (halo world) near the bomb/flag to contest it. I have helped my team win several games with this fact alone. once the bomb is near the "plant area" and your down to sudden death.. if your within 30 ft of the ball it wont count down.. Think about this... You've all played game where sudden death is taking 4 mins long and the 5 sec never counts down right? Thats cuz someone is hiding near the ball. When the other team is flooding in wave after wave.. your NOT THINKING "I should be checking the parimeter(sp?)"
Ive held a ball contested for several minutes. giving my team ample time to keep trying to arm the bomb or contest a flag so that it doesnt respawn.

In Zanzibar- near the front doors. or 1/2 up the stair case or on the top level.

Coag- if you get the flag on the bottom floor chances are the whole team is down there.. you can get in the base on the main floor and contest till its either taken away or somebody smart enuff comes looking for ya. Or if the bomb is at the plant site and its not (nuetral bomb game) you can hid underneath the base and keep it there...

Burial Grounds-just outside the base underneath the turret gun..

Waterworks.. Outside the base up against the wall.. or in that dark corner on the roof.. where that 2nd hole is..

Headlong- has a lot of good places to hide.. just think about it.

Another tip- this is more of a common sense sorta thing.. When the flag is out or the base but on the floor. I usually dont try to fight the other team too much.. unless, Im sneaking up behind them... My objective is to keep grabbing the flag and moving it closer to my base.. even if I get killed, I know my team is respawning.. when I respawn.. I grab the flag and keep jumping. yea I know I'll die. but if the kill me while Im in the air the flag with fly closer to my base.. just something to think about..

Learn to play with a higher Look Sensitivity. If your look sensitivity is normal, make it faster and you'll eventually get used to it and be a better player.

If you have plasma grandes & regular granades, use the plasma ones first. You can change what type of granade you are going to throw by pressing the black button.

good stuff also if you have the flag and are trying to just move it and know you are going to die, while you are in the air if you hit the left trigger you will throw the flag even further

I'm sure that this is well known, but , since this thread is also for noobs:
If someone throws the flag. You can catch it. Just press and hold "X" and you will snatch it out of the air.

On the fact that you should never slow down in a ghost, I disagree. Especially on a level like Coag. where it is really out in the open, you are an easy shot for a sniper because you are really easy to lead. My thought's are that if you've experienced a really quick and good sniper try stopping and starting your ghost, you become harder to lead.

Anyone who goes slow in a ghost on Coag gets sniped by me :) ...It's a lot harder to hit a person in the ghost while they are moving, so I don't really understand how using a stop-and-go method would be effective.

Stoping burst speed while a sniper is looking at you is stupid. The ghost is almost too fast to lead while you are using the turbo boost. I've learned from getting sniped by Ugamer.
