More EA stupidity in BF 2142 game......
Then I am going to sue every movie studio who ever put a commercial or trailer for a movie I didn't cae about on the beginning of a DVD I bought, and I couldn't skip over it. FALSE ADVERTISING, DAMMIT!
Uh, they're putting spyware on your computer. Don't you realize that?

Wow. Talk about something going over someone's head!

I wasn't much interested in BF before this, and won't be getting it now.

It's kind of stupid you cant play Titan mode vs the bots, I kind of want to get a feel for the different vehicles and weapons before I get owned online but I guess that's too much to ask. Back to playing conquest mode.........
Wow. Talk about something going over someone's head!

Battlefield 2142, without "Spyware": In-game Mountain Dew ads

Battlefield 2142, with "Spyware": In-game ads based on what they think is your favorite drink, like, Coke. Wow, a Coke ad, I'm sure that's gonna destroy your computer, ruin your entire privacy, and open the door for Coke salespeople showing up on your door at 2 in the morning.
Some people from Joystiq started a petition against this spyware. Sign it!

Signing an online petition, expecting it to matter, even when it involves EA.....and people are calling ME an idiot?

I never said it wasn't a bad thing, but I also never said it was the worst possible thing to ever happen in the history of PC games, like many of you are making it out to be.

I think the real thing that gets people is EA is going to get dumbass people to pay full price for a game that is "enhanced" with a interactive advertisement system. I would'nt mind if they showed me a ad for some taco spices or Coke if the game was $19.99 but if I'm paying MSRP $49.99 then it's a waste of my time to pay for the game.

Holy crap thanks OP! I was just about to go pick mine up either today or tomorrow. No way in hell will I be getting this now. Why the hell couldn't they have dropped this bomb earlier. This is waaaay sneaky and messed up.
I can't believe I supported this game and was willing to overlook the bad reviews it got becaue I trusted the franchise so much.
Not going to pick it up till they remove that crap.

It's not the ads I hate. I'm in the minority in thinking that some ads actually add to the realism. Say if your tank runs over a bullet hole riddled billboard for some well known drink. What I find appalling is that they have the balls to charge full price for a game that installs spyware on your comp so they can make money off you AFTER you buy the game and track your surfing habits. You wont know about this until after you buy it and can't return it. I can't think of a better example of big brother in your life then this.
They certainly have large brass ones and I hope they get ripped off painfully in the form of consumer rebellion.

Sounds like you're ashamed of what you're doing on the internet ;)

I think this shit would be funny if EA did it to me, then I can play Battlefield 2142 with ads for "BIG TITTY CUM SUCKERS VOL 7".

ROFL.

My point exactly.

I'd say both are a breach of privacy. They may be different in scale, but both are a breach of privacy.

I dont know about you, but I dont care if its anymous or not. If my personal information is being transmitted somewhere, especially through a game I paid for, then thats when the line is drawn. I dont know why VG is saying a petetion wont matter because petetions cleary do, as customers sign them. I think he might possibly be a troll or is trying to spark controversy for fun... hmm... :whistle2:?

People have petitioned EA for years for them to let 2K make an NFL game. People have been petitioning SEGA for years for translated versions of Shining Force 3 Scenarios 2 and 3. People petition stupid crap all the time, and less than 1% of the time, the people those petitions are aimed at actually cave in. EA looks at sales numbers, and that's it. Sales numbers also speak as a voice for the consumer, and it's HELL of a lot bigger voice than some online petition.

Well, I know one thing...if I go to an actual basketball games, there ARE ads anywhere, I think it's pretty realistic to have ads in the stadiums

I remember NBA JAM just had "NBA JAM" logos where there'd usually be company logos.

As for the email thing..it's kind of creepy..but what can someone really do with your email?

Not much.

LOL, you guys don't get the worst of it.

EA expects that you get rid of WINDOWS SECURITY INSTALLS and get rid of your your firewalls.

Check out the demo readme:

"Players who have the Windows security update KB917422 installed may suffer from an application error when running the Battlefield 2142 demo. This error can be solved by uninstalling the KB917422 update."

This is what Microsoft.com says about update #KB917422 :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en

" A security issue has been identified in the Windows Kernel that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it."

Considering that you must do these things to actually play the game, a good number of the idiots playing the game have probably had their identity, credit cards stolen, and pc hacked into...

To put it bluntly, this is pure out assault on EA'S fanbase. This is WORSE then Sony's rootkits.

Yes, an online site tracks your IP. Want a cookie?

Does a fucking video game of all things need to do that as well?

Furthermore, do online sites DEMAND that you disable windows hotfixes and firewalls, making you suceptable to hackers stealing your identity, credit cards, etc?

There are some points where things go over the line. THis went over the line.

This may sound silly but I have been on the fence about this game and this pushes me firmly over to the don't buy side. It seems to not change too much from bf2 anyways and be the fps version of madden just updating rosters and adding two new elements to the game

Man, leave VG alone. He's totally stoked about blowing shit up in a futuristic world slathered in advertisements for hefty girls' singles sites.

The rest of you can just not buy the game.

I got a eHarmony billboard last night in a game.

Oh, wow. This is getting much worse by the moment......

EA released a patch for Battlefield 2142 today, and I noticed this while looking through its ReadMe:"Players who have the Windows security update KB917422 installed may suffer from an application error when running Battlefield 2142. This error can be solved by uninstalling the KB917422 update."

And what does the Windows security update KB917422 do?

From Microsoft: "A security issue has been identified in the Windows Kernel that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it.

So basically, EA wants the users of BF 2142 to uninstall a vital security update to run their game. The reason? Because a fatal error occurs if the adware is unable to access your computer through the Windows security feature that was put in place to avoid unauthorized access to your computer. Brilliant.

Wow..... just wow... EA has some fucking balls...
All I'm going to say is a quote from Gameinformer lastest issue.

Are you sure it isn't "Battlefield 2142 is a $50 mod?" The sentence you posted doesn't seem to make much sense.

Unless EA finds a way to invade our privacy as well (and trust me, they're looking).
