Not as amazing as the DS, but still wow.

Nintendo sold 350,000 last week, when many stores were closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, compared to 300,000 the previous week. The only time with higher sales was an eight-day period in late November 2006, when the Wii debuted and more than 600,000 units sold.
I wonder how many they will sell this month? I'm going to guess it will be right around one million.
1.8 million would be my guess.
I am so glad I stood in line the first night and got mine. I couldnt imagine a year later and some still cant get one.
I don't know what to tell you. I've actually had opportunities to pick one up, but Nintendo has made me so paranoid I can't get it. Every single time I buy any hardware from them, IMMEDIATELY, I mean a month or less, they upgrade it and screw me over.

NPDs are gonna be fun this month. 1.5 million Wiis sold, confirmed. Heck, PS3 might even hit 300k.. haha!

That could be a possibility, depending on how many Nintendo stockpiled earlier this year.

My 1.8 Million is based on the often quoted number of Wiis being made per month. I dont know when production was supposed to hit that level, but it was before the Hollidays then they have to be release at some point...

Other territories have to get some of those 1.8 million a month.

I don't doubt the Wii numbers will be high, but I'm really interested in those DS numbers. 650k in a week is mind-boggling. Where's the DS Prints Money Gif already?

And for that matter, where's a Wii one?

The sad part is the demand is still not fulfilled for the holiday. I counted over 200+ calls yesterday that I answered myself at Wal-Mart, and that was only in a five hour period.

So the question is: Is Nintendo purposely holding back production to sustain demand over a longer period of time, or are they really unable to meet production demands?

If you think it's the former, then why would Nintendo do this? After all, the profit from a $249.99 Wii today will still be the same as the profit from the same sale next year right?

Holding back production would be foolish because they'd be potentially losing sales to people who don't care to hunt for them continuously.

Let's look at it this way: if they sold consistently through this month what they have the last two weeks (bringing it up to 1.3 million for the month), that would equal the best November for the PS2.

And I believe old hardware continues to work even when a new version is released.

They are not holding back anything that they can produce at the same costs as they are already producing.

Nintendo has factories. They can only produce a limited amount of Wiis in those factories. They've done everything they can to maximize the output of their existing factories, which is somewhere around 1.8 million Wiis a month. Now, building additional factories to increase that figure would cost them MUCH more. You say the profit from a 249.99 Wii will be the same as next year - it won't be if they aren't profiting because they have to build new factories in order to make that new Wii today. Since the demand will eventually die down, those factories are then going to not be used anymore

Lets say each Wii costs Nintendo $150 to make, and they are making $100 profit on each console (I have no idea the real numbers). They would actually rather make that $100 profit today than in a year because money in the present is worth more than the same amount in the future (they could invest that money, etc). So if it was just a matter of spending another $150,000,000 a month to make another million consoles, they would. But they would have to drastically increase their costs to do this by building new factories, and it wouldn't be just the $150,000,000 used for materials, it would be $200,000,000 for all the added costs. So now they are only earning $50 on each additional console, when they could just wait a couple of monthes and make $100.

These numbers are insane. I'm willing to bet hardware actually outsells software since it seems like everyone I know who owns a Wii only bought it because Wii Sports was fun at a party. There are people I know who bought a Wii who have never owned a video game system in their life.

I think some of you guys forget about VC. I've spent almost as much on VC games, as I have for disc based games. The Wii is selling games, and has very healthy market for games.

drfunk85: you rule.

Yeah, numbers are kind of... insane. At this point in time, I have no idea what else is necessary to get a flood of "most awesome shit ever" on the Wii from 3rd parties. Even the arguments about "these are just people buying Wii sports" don't really hold up - the number is so high, that any subset of the user base investing in a product is likely to result in a profit. And when you consider the lower development cost for the Wii...

I hate to say this, but I'm putting my money on that Wii Ware thing. Mark my words, before 2008 is over we'll see something from someone we've never heard of before, that's going to generate a reaction similar to the Zack & Wiki thread. Mark them words.

Not betting, though...

As doubtful as it seems, I would not be terribly surprised if the wii is still difficult to find for Christmas 2008.

I feel, though, that the ps2 was able to put 4 million consoles in american homes, alone, in the two months during their second christmas. Which looks to blow nintendo's figures out of the water from a manufacturing supply sense.

Not betting, though...
I'm with you. Both on the fact that I rule and Wii Ware. I have a few engineer and CS friends who are trying to get into developing Wii Ware games. If they are, I can't imagine the numbers of everyone else.

I bet the problem is that alot of the people that work in nintendo's factories waste all thier time on CAG. GET BACK TO WORK you lazy bastards! Make more Wii's!

As long as it doesnt also sell like Z&W. ZING
As long as it doesnt also sell like Z&W. ZING
Did the numbers really turn out that bad? I had a pretty hard time tracking down a copy around here for a couple weeks.

And you're right Colbert. If I were a betting man, I would take that bet for you.

And vherub, is there a source for Sony "selling" 4 million PS2s in 2 months in the U.S. alone?

Found some U.S. Sales data. Note that since the PS2 came out in 2000, it was their THIRD Christmas. The Wii is currently tracking ahead of it as far as their second Nov. Or at least it would appear
