More tax dollars at work

That was $5 million to educate people about the transition to digital. Like the article said. Not a whole lot of people know about this either in part or in whole. Still, I think they could have used a little bit more money to get the word out.

Oh, LOL.
I sorta thought that...but then I didn't....

I did this and you can get at most 2 of them. They say the boxes will be 50 to 70 bucks so that makes it only 10-30 after cupon. You don't get them till next year though and they only last 90 days.

What only lasts 90 days? It seems like the coupon, but I hope it doesn't come until next year just before the conversion. Maybe I should have waited to apply for the coupon. I don't want to buy the convertor early. And I hope there's a good price on them so I can get them free.

They dont send them till next year and they wont be out till next year. It will last 90 days from when they send it. So you will not get this in the next 4-6 weeks. you will get it in about a year. They said most will cost 50-70 bucks so you get 40 off with this making it 10-30.

so you get this box and it only last for 3 months is what your saying, and then quits working?

My grandparent's won't be happy, lol

they still use an attena to get the channels they want

Converter boxes will be available late February or March of this year (2008). The coupons will be good for up to 90 days after you receive them (or close to it). The converter boxes should last quite some time.

oooooo, I get it now...

LoL don't mind me

Do you need one for each TV though? I'll get the coupons for my grandparents then

Maybe it should be made clear that this only means that you wont be able to use rabbit ears to recieve a picture. If you have cable it wont apply to you.

It seems as if no one is actually reading the article or knows what this is about...

I understand completly what it is, my grandparents don't have cable, but use "rabbit ears" or attena's on the roof to get the local channels they watch

I just need to know if you need this box for each TV
Feb. 2009 is going to be awesome, can't wait.
i dont see what the big deal is. My understanding is everything will be digital, but not hd. What actual difference will I notice?

yes, you will need it for each tv to change channels.

Comcast charges us $60 here for basic cable, which includes many channels no one in my house watches. We were contemplating going back to watching the over the air channels, but not if we have to pay another dime to be able to watch them.

For the $60, we get 7 crappy sports channels, the only one of which I watch is ESPN Classic for the original American Gladiators, among other crap channels no one in my house watches.

It's just stupid to charge people anything to have to convert, when many people(my family included) are more than happy with our picture quality as it is. For what little tv I personally watch, I know I can find most of the shows I watch online via either YouTube or the various major network websites.

It's just ridiculous if you ask me.

Cause even non-HD digital is night and day compared to non-HD analog.

-Edit-

To clarify, with digital there's no snow, fuzz, color distortion, picture quality loss, etc., it just has a 100% perfect broadcasted picture or it doesn't have a picture at all.

Exactly, my analog channels are fuzzy and look damn awful in general. When I had DirectTV everything looked great since those were true digital unlike Cox.

Too bad digital is all choppy and crap.

Maybe by Feb 09 there won't be people above me messing everything up, or I might even live in a neighborhood where I can actually have an outdoor antenna :)

Bumping this because I just got the coupon/gift card for $80. Can I get one for that price (so I don't have to pay anything out of pocket)? Which one is a good one to get? Thanks.

as far as i know you can only use 1 coupon on each box. i just used one today at walmart and it was under $11 with the coupon. im saving the other to buy one somewhere other than wal"crappy electronics"mart. i think i saw one at best buy or circuit city for $60

i do, however, get a kick out of people laughing at those that dont (and wont) know about the digital transition, simply because most people have no ideal that this was originally suppose to take place in 2001
