I have not played any of this games, but I really enjoy RPGs. If this game does come out on launch day, I may pick it up. I just need to know what type of game is it. Is it more like D&D or Final Fantasy type of RPGs? What should I expect from this game?

come out on Launch Day? Are you talking about The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion or 3: Morrowind?

Anyhow, I would say its more D&D than FF, though its an awkward comparison. You've got stats and skills which you can increase through repeated use.

The Battle system is not Turn Based in the conventional sense, you have to physically swing or cast a spell, although when you do, its like dice rolling behind the scenes to determine its hit. And its awkward if you dont hit, because you'll just swing and the enemy doesnt have any alternate animations to show that it dodged it.

Your Item Management is done with Grids, like Neverwinter Nights or any number of PC RPGS.

Now you got me thinking... I'm not sure... I know there is an rpg coming at launch, and I was pretty sure is was a morrowind game... I'll double check

Morrowind is a subtitle of the 3rd part of the Elder Scrolls series. you're asking about Oblivion, the 4th entry.

If you're asking about Morrowind, buy Morrowind: Game of the Year Edition for the XBox (or PC!)

It's not really at all like Final Fantasy, or Japaneses RPGs. It is the epitomy of Western RPG. The game is wonderful, beautiful game if you appreciate the concept of an open ended RPG that allows you to do damn near anything you want. However, it does have a HUGE amount of scripted missions, stories, etc that you can stick to if open endedness doesn't appeal to you.

I've been playing The Elder Scrolls series since Arena(1994) and into Daggerfall(1996). I cannot recommend them enough. However, it WILL be something VERY new and different if you're use to Japanese RPGs.

But, hell, it's worth a try... you can get the GOTY Edition just about everywhere new for $20.

Thanks for the clarification man! So, is there a strong storyline to follow, or character development during the gameplay? Is it like KOTOR's battle system maybe?

heh, i've never played them, but I think it's real time action, possibly in a first person perspective.

I came in here hoping one of the E3 people could give us a nice description :)

It is nothing like KOTOR.

It's most similar to GTA, you can go anywhere kill anyone and most of the game is comprised of mini-quests for different guilds and factions.

If you are really curious morrowind is very cheap right now, Oblivion will be very similar but the graphics and combat system will be upgraded.

Morrowind= "Are we there yet? How about now? Now? Can I kill something now? I'm sick of walking... Where the fuck is that quest? Am I There YET!?"

When I first started out I thought the game was just amazing. It looked pretty and you could do anything. Then I started questing and it could easily take you an hour to get to where you want to go. Combat starts out clunky and you miss a lot. Eventually you kill a lot of stuf in a few hits and you're grossly over powered. However, thats only when you come to a monster, as they seem to be spread out 1 every 5 miles.

I picked this up a few weeks ago and attempted to play it. I really like RPG's but this one just (for me) offered nothing that was fun.

Its an amazing game once you get into it... A lot of people are put off because it seems like a lot of walking around between places, its really not. You can use the giant cockroach for fast travel. The Mages Guild can transport you between cities. You can get spells that will transport you to the nearest Imperial temple or Almsivi shrine in a city (useful if you can get fast travel to a city near the one you want). You can fly once you have the spell. Later in the game, you can get boots that'll let you run increadibly fast.

If your energy bar is empty or low (probably from running), you will miss a lot in combat, because your character is exhausted. Let your character rest, or cast a spell on yourself to recover, before you fight.

This is why you NEED the strategy guide for this game, not to cheat ahead and ruin the game like most people do, but to learn some of these things. The game doesn't do a great job of training you early on, you just jump right in.

If you're overpowered that fast, you're fighting in the wrong places or you're not advancing in the storyline at all.

I've spent hundreds of hours in this game and I'm very excited about the new Elder Scrolls game coming out for 360. I've beaten the game at least 3 times, got all the interesting items, become Grandmaster of all 3 houses and played with all 3 strongholds (with 3 different characters), become leader of all the guilds, etc. I even brought the semi nude dancers from Suran into my mages tower, on the Xbox version. But since I lost my savefiles, I haven't done the expansions on Xbox, even though I own it. Don't really feel like beating the game again just to play them.

I hope Oblivion has tighter gameplay... much tighter gameplay. Even when Morrowind was brand new I thought it was a little choppy in pretty much all areas -- it was/is still a good game, though. Oblivion's graphics look very nice.

I hope there is some character modifying you can do in Oblivion, as well.

You can get Morrowind Platinum Hits (Xbox) for $9.99 at Best Buy and the GOTY edition (Xbox) for $19.99. I'd suggest the GOTY edition.

I ran it at 800x600 on my computer (3.2 ghz P4, 512 ram, 64mb GForce4-MX 440), and the game still ran choppy as hell. So much that I didn't bother playing it that much. But from what I played, the combat was kinda iffy, but the open ended-ness and concept seemed okay.

Morrowind is elder scrolls 3 on xbox1. oblivion is elder scrolls 4 on xbox360.

anyway, oblivion is much closer to D&D than FF in terms of style. However it has huge sprawling landscapes, massive dungeons, and so much stuff to do you can never 100% complete it really. A cool experience. Pick up Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind for XBOX1 or PC, and see what you think. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion will be similar, but much better likely. Morrowind was one of the best RPGs, if not the best RPG, on consoles this generation, so I'm looking forward to Oblivion.

You are looking at a huge game that will take away well over 100 hours of your life. Its alot of fun, but I suggest getting the guide.

I'd say overall, Morrowind is thoroughly enjoyable. It just depends on what type of game you want to play.

For me, following the quest got old very fast. It was just a big jumble of confusing names and places, and finding out what to do next wasn't easy. So I decided to branch off and become an outlaw, kill a few people, level up, and such. Some 20 hours later I could plunder entire towns and kill everyone in the village, and THAT was fun. Later on, I had at least one house in every city that I'd stash all of my loot in. Then I decided to become a vampire and rape, pillage, and burn the land, and that was immensely fun for a time.

I haven't played in a long time (too many other games came out that caught my attention), but my goal is eventually to kill Vivec, who is some sort of god or something, and thus establish a terrifying reign of world dominiation.

Fun? Yes. Yes it is.

Thanks for all the replies guys, now I have very good idea of what to expect, but I still need to play one of the games before I make a decision. It seems to be an offline MMORPG... I'll try it out soon.

Well, that would just make it an RPG. Which it is.

At any rate, if you have no patience, and don't really like alot of complex detail, you won't like this game. This game amazes me even more than GTA:SA, though for the same reasons, which is the fact that it's so vast. Vast in every aspect. The landscape, the places to go, the amount of dungeons, the amount of spells, the amount of skills, the amount of races and classes, everything. I think it far surpasses any RPG I've ever played, except when you come to the combat system. But that's something I'm willing to deal with to enjoy the rest of the game.
