"IndustryGamers asked about the possibility of a version of Mortal Kombat on the current PSP or the upcoming 3DS, and Himmerick replied:

'We’re not launching day one on all consoles like that. We are looking at them; we have a PSP2 in the house and we’re looking at the engine, like what can it support. Always a big thing for us is the performance. We’re running at 60 fps, what can we do and do we have to build all the art assets over. We’re definitely looking at them. PSP2 looks like it’s a pretty powerful machine. We don’t have a 3DS system in house yet, but we’re looking to get one, and we’ll certainly look at what its power is.'"

Something tells me he wasn't supposed to talk about that. I can't wait to see what the PSP2 can do.

It would be cool if the new games were mini blu ray UMD, and also could play old PSP games, along with downloaded versions. Also give us a 2nd analog nub, and shape the case so it fits our hands better. I had a PSP once and it was hard for me to use the analog nub because it was so close to the bottom my left hand didnt have much to grab a hold of. Also want to be able to play it with a dual shock 3 on my tv when hooked up. I dont really care for touch screens, but i guess that could be a good thing.

mini blu-ray UMD? Please tell me you're joking.
load times. Nobody wants load times on their handheld system.
Yeah, this. While I would love to have a PSP2 that can play all my UMD games in case my current PSP dies, I would understand if they went with a speedier format. After all, by the time the PSP2 is released, a micro-sd card could probably hold 3-4x the data of one UMD, if it can't already.

Other things I personally want:

- 2 analog nubs
- mini-hdmi out
- bluetooth w/dual shock 3 compatability
- trophies
- physical game format, preferably flash memory
- better copy protection

I'm not even sure what I want anymore.
I know I dont want touch screen. getting over loaded on that. I want sticks, and buttons to mash.
But I dont know where I stand on UMD/SDcard type vs. Download. The more Mini's and demos I get, the more I'm on download side. But I would mind being able to play the old games. I guess
Yea I just saw that too. Sony needs to say something this weekend! No question!
With 3 new PSP 3000s releasing in Japan over the holidays, I do not think they want to talk about the PSP2. I think we'll hear something before the 3DS releases in Q1 2011.

I'm pretty excited... I love my PSP. Maybe PSP games will get even cheaper! :bouncy:

Just read about this on Joystiq. Guess the rumors are true that it'll be out sometime in 2011, especially since Devs already have working units.

I really hope they use some kind of flash memory card/cartridge for the games ~ they're small and able to hold different sizes. I for one, do like the digital download concept for an actual 'Portable' device. I don't want to worry about having to carry around numerous games/accessories with me. I also hope the PSP2 is portable and pocket size friendly like the Go.

Dang, my dilemma now...Buy the Go this holiday season, or wait til next year for a cheap Go or full priced PSP2... hmm, o'well I'll probably still buy the Go this holiday and wait a for new slim model of the PSP2 (we all know know they'll be one).

Do not buy a Go.That should not be an option. Buy a 3000 and enjoy all the great games that are available on PSN and UMD.

I know the PSP Go isn't for everyone, but I do like it and will get it eventually. Personally, I don't care about playing most of the games on UMD, PSN Store has most of what I want to play already (even though a bit overpriced).

Anyhow back to topic; I wonder how much Sony is going to fine him for disclosing information about the PSP2.

Lots of talk about the PSP2 in the past 3 days

Now there are reports that Sony has handed PSP2 development kits to a number of key in-house and third-party studios for a "significant launch window line-up." While industry sources weren't named, reports over the last few months have indicated that Sony wants to make a big impact at launch by spreading the PSP2 tech widely across the industry.

Currently little is known about the upcoming handheld. However unlike the PSPgo, the PSP2 will likely feature a UMD optical drive--and not be a download-only device--according to a related statement by PlayStation CEO Kazuo Hirai. A report released back in May also said that the device was "****ing powerful," that it was based on a four-core Cell CPU. There's also talk that it will have two cameras--one forward and one backward facing--and a possible 3G connection.

We were also informed by a developer, asked if when they looked around their studio they could see a PSP2 device of any kind, "I can't tell you. I'll be able to tell you why I can't tell you in six months though."

Looks like we have to wait 6 more months for an official statement about the PSP2

Call me crazy, but the PSP2 at launch may be the price as the 3DS.

3DS barely creeps above PSP in overall specs and it's 250. I'm gonna guess the PSP2 is gonna be 350 and up. Hey, they put out the PS3 for 600 bucks. They aren't afraid of pricing high.

New info from Kotaku

The device was shown to have a touch panel on the back of the system what looked like a mouse trackpad. The PSP2 also had dual analog sticks and a larger display which Sony touted as being "HD." While the device was shown in two form-factors, one that looked like the PSPgo (seen above) and one that looked like the PSP, Sony told attendees that they have not yet settled on the final design for the system.

Since breaking the news earlier this week, a few more details have shaken loose about the device, which our sources have verified.

One of the key ones is that the PSP2 will not have a UMD drive. The UMD (Universal Media Disc) was launched in 2004 for use in the PSP. Initially, the format was used for movies, but slow sales of UMD films lead to studios dropping support for the format.

Sony's PSPgo is UMD-free version of the PSP, and sources tell Kotaku that the PSP2 will follow in the footsteps of that portable. Games will be stored on a Memory Stick, according to one source. Though we've also been told that Sony is still puzzling out what the final non-UMD storage solution will be for the PSP2.

We've also learned that the PSP2 will be a much more powerful gaming device with twice the RAM of the Xbox 360.

While we don't yet know all of the portable's system specifications, we have been told that the PSP2 will feature 1 GB of RAM. That's compared to the 64 MB of RAM the PSPgo and PSP 3000 have. Both of those portables use a MIPS R4000 CPU clocked at up to 333 MHz. By comparison the Xbox 360 has 512 MB of RAM and runs a 3.2 GHZ CPU.

The specs for the yet-to-be-released Nintendo 3DS haven't been officially detailed but we've heard it will be as powerful as the Nintendo Wii which features 64 MB of RAM, and a special processor clocked at 729 MHz.
It's starting to sound like someone at Sony is listening to the murmuring about the Playstation Portable and doing something to fix the issues some have with it. Dual analog sticks. No UMD. A bigger screen. More powerful tech. Touch controls. We're not hearing a single thing we don't like so far.
Dang that is one seriously impressive device...no doubt it'll be an expensive handheld.
