Hey -- I'm shopping for my first HDTV, and as I investigate, one criterion that strikes me as being important is what they're calling 24p. (In brief: Film is shot at 24 frames per second, and so if the TV's refresh rate is a multiple of 24, it's capable of essentially displaying movies at 24 frames per second by duplicating each frame up to that multiple. So for a 120Hz TV, it pulls down 5 of the same frame. Most LCD screens are 60Hz, which isn't a multiple of 24, but a TV also doesn't have to be 120Hz to pull off 24p -- some TVs, like the Sony Bravias, just have a 24Hz or 48Hz mode they can slip into.)

So I'm trying to determine the best cheapass TV. I understand that plasma TVs have tremendously high refresh rates, so those are on the table, but they're also energy hogs so I'm trying to look more closely at LCD and LED screens.

I've found 40" and 42" Sony, Samsungs and LGs for $650-750 that fit the bill, and I'm wondering what I can find that's cheaper. Willing to buy refurbished, willing to try my Black Friday luck, wiliing to see what CAGs might recommend.

As I've continued my research on this I think I've got it down between a refurbished 40" Sony KDL-40S4100 (from the Sony outlet online) for $650 shipped + tax and a 42" LG LH30 from a local retailer for $700 + tax. This is a hair-pulling process. But I'd still love to hear any opinions.

A plasma TV energy consumption breaks down to costing ~$3/mo more then a LCD TV. If you buy a plasma you get more "bang for your buck" in terms of cost per inch of screen.

Wal-mart BF adscan was up at DVDTalk for a little while before it got pulled. It had a Sony 46" LCD for $897 IIRC.

I know it was Sony, LCD, and 90% certain of the price, 80% certain of the size. (mine is 37", I remember thinking it would be about 10" bigger)

Damn I'm late but walmart was selling 46in sharp for 762.22 (tax included in that) 120Hz 1080P, Great TV. Standard retail in just over $1000 pre-tax

im not a fan of the 4100.

pull the actual power consumption numbers for the displays youre considering.
i was surprised to see a sony lcd using more power than my plasma.

id take the lg you listed over the 4100.

Wow that 46 inch sounds pretty nice^^

Do you have a listing or link?
