Most over hyped games

CAGiversary!
I'm just curious which games people feel were praised by magazinesand ads during development only to come out and suck. I'm just curious what your greatest disappointments are.

A couple i can think of are
Blasto (ps1)
The Bouncer
Tomb Raider AOD

i thought the bouncer was fun. as for my greatest diappoinment it would be morrowind i thought it was going to fun because everyone said it is. but i hate it.

Personally I played bouncer and it wasn't horrible, but at the time I was a hardcore PSM reader and they talked up the awesomeness of the game (and according to the magazine, the demo's were awesome) but when the game came out it was nothing like they had described because square took out a lot of stuff

This also remind me of the Dark Cloud cover they had with the headline "ZELDA KILLER"

Hmmmm... maybe Super Mario Sunshine. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, I just didn't really get into it. And it wasn't nearly as good as people bragged about IMO.
disgaea. good game just too deep for its own good imo. la pucelle owns it any day of the week
Too deep? I liked it but if I had to pick one complaint, I'd say it's too shallow compared to FFT or Jagged Alliance or something.

I'll agree with The Bouncer and Soul Calibur II though. The Bouncer was one of the most mediocre beat-em-ups I ever played. I was thinking it would be like a kick ass video game version of roadhouse haha. SC II looked like a dreamcast game and the gameplay was pretty yawn.

There are too many to name. Almost any game that you see commercials for. Its also a matter of opinion. I love halo, but others dont.

i found it too deep but i only played it for 6 hours. it wanted you to learn too much about the game too fast, and i had no intrest in reading hours of tutorials before getting into the gameplay and knowing what i was doing.
Black and White. God I hate that game.
Every time I see this game mentioned people are really tearing into it. I thought it got good reviews when it came out? I haven't heard one good thing about it lately.

The reason I ask is I picked it up several months ago at Walmart for 4.77. Haven't played it yet and I'm getting the impression that I probably shouldn't.

It was Gamespy's most over rated game of all time.

I bet Fable takes that honor after it is released

I know that saying this is like and open invitation to flame, but I cannot get into any of the 3D zelda games including OofT. I played it when it was new on the N64, and again on the collector's disk, and I tried WW as well. They just don't feel like zelda to me, which I suppose, is because they're nothing like the ones I grew up with. I was afraid of Metroid Prime for the same reason, but ended up getting totally immersed in that and my only complaint there is the way free look works.

Not even out yet, but fable clearly is the World's most over hyped game. It could end up being good, but I think it will be a good RPG, but not really ground breaking.

Xbox in general, Halo, and anything created by Rockstar (can't vouch for Red Dead Revolver tho, haven't played it and I'm pretty sure it was originally developed by Capcom).

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Hyped as the big "Square returns to Nintendo" game, ended up being mediocre at best.

Viewtiful Joe was hyped to hell and back by reviewers (and still is), yet I found it pretty average.

Daikatana, no further explanation needed.

The Nintendo 64 system, though not a game, was way over hyped. I remember getting mine on release day along with Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64. Then I bought another game for about 7 months later.

I expect both GTA San Andreas and Scarface to be added to this list when they're released.

Hmm, so many overhyped games....

The Resident Evil series in general. I have yet to have any kind of fun playing a Resident Evil game, and my husband cheerfully gave away his last Resident Evil game to his nephews, it was so horrible. I feel sorry for the poor unsuspecting little kids. I will never spend money on another Resident Evil game again, because for $40 I can find much more interesting paperweights than a useless Resident Evil disc.

Wow so many over-hyped games. Ones that come straight to mind are Enter the Matrix and Halo. Enter the matrix was hyped along with the movies and when it came out it turned into one of the worst games ever developed with all the glitches it had. And to think that that game had so much potential if they hadn't put it out that early and had worked out the kinks of it.

Halo is an over hyped game because at the time that I bought it everyone was like oh it is the funnest FPS ever and it kills Goldeneye, etc. not to mention that to me it was the only o.k. looking game at the time for XBox. when I played it, it turned out to be a very average at best FPS. It was like a used car, shiny and nice looking on the exterior, but in the inside with lacked depth and it was a car without substance. The stroy was an average sci-fi story at best that mimicked many others (and which now other sci-fi FPS's have been mimicking this mimicker), the level design was extremely linear, and the famed cars had some of the worst controls ever. the music was good in it and A.I. was quite challenging on the harder difficulties, but other than that it wasn't that great like everybody proclaimed it was.
Halo. Hyped to be the greatest FPS ever, yet so horribly sub-par.

And I STILL enjoy Black and White.
I concur, I thought Halo was an average FPS at best. I bet Killzone will soon be at the top of this list.

I like Black and Whites premise, I just dont think the pulled it off too well. Maybe B&W 2 will hold my attention longer.

Oh and any Star Wars game. They are always way over-hyped.

I'm going to say any popular game that people like just so I can be a BIG TIME REBEL and look like an idiot.
