Before the PS2 launched i would have to say Bouncer was EXTREMLY hyped & it sucked.
Recently there's been alot of "hype" for Marvel vs. Capcom 2. I've had the DC version for years now & i just don't get how people are paying/trading alot to get this game.
I agree with you on Marvel vs. Capcom 2 not being what it's made out to be. It's not a game that should be taken all that seriously. I think it was the first exposure of the "vs." series for most people, so they were overwhelmed with the flash. It's still a pretty fun game, but there are so many issues and the game is really just a whorefest. They turned it into an unbalanced Fighter's Megamix.
I have a hard time decifering what exactly overrated is these days... for the last few years i've been reading Gamefaqs and other message boards and I find that it's often the most popular games that come under the most scrutiny. So when you say a game like FFX is overrated, I don't know if that game is rated high to begin with (unless we are just referring to the professionals here). I don't really like the Gran Turismo series and neither do any of my friends. If I went into a room, and said "man, Gran Turismo 3 sucks", no one would care... so how could Gran Turismo really be overrated. I think overrated means that both critics and the general gaming public accept the game you dislike as great. An example of this would be Devil May Cry (or Maximo, Disgaea, Rez, etc...). I personally love that game and i'm willing to bet that 95% of the people who've played it, do too. So i'd consider that a more leginimate response to the question.
Anyway, my vote for the most overrated game for not just the PS2, but this whole generation is Beyond Good & Evil. Let me just say right off the bat that there is nothing "wrong" about the game, but I think the people who like this game, simply liked it because they took the time to beat it. I know that sounds strange to some of you, but I know that a lot of people do not take the time to beat most games because it seems like too big of a project and a newer game that just came out now becomes the priority instead. I think people who picked up the game had heard that it was only 8 hours long, so they knew that if they played those couple extra hours, it could be done and they could move on. The game for the most part is average. I've played my fair share of Zelda / Metal Gear type games, so nothing new really stuck out to me. I know that a game doesn't need to be innovative to be a great game (look at the Crash Bandicoot 1-3), but it's not like this game comes across as being highly refined either. The graphics are good, but not the best. The music is fine. The gameplay is fine. The story is drawing enough (slightly dissapointing ending). I'm willing to bet that 2 years from now that this game will never be mentioned again while some of these other games that are being listed as "overrated" will. If a sequel does come out, more people would pick it up this time around, but wether you choose to believe it or not, it would turn out to be another one of those "I played it for 2 hours, now it's sitting in my "to finish later" pile" games.
