Movies I need to/should see...

Great, thanks to this thread, I now have 244 DVDs in queue. I already had about 175, but man...

Anyways, the movie I'll recommend is on the list in OP, but I really recommend seeing High Fidelity. It was written by Nick Hornby, a guy who really understands love and all that you go through (as a guy). Really well done, John Cusack is great in it, as is Jack Black. Great movie, definitely in my all time top 5...

And for those who say Citizen Kane isn't a very good movie, you have to look at it from a different perspective. It's more of a movie that other movies live up to. There are things in Citizen Kane (characters, the tradgedy of the story) that are incredibly well done. The story is great and it is a classic that I think everybody must see.

Anyways, that's that...

[EDIT]: I forgot to mention Band of Brothers, while not a movie, it's like a ten hour WWII movie that feels incredibly real and tells an amazing story.

High Fidelity is one of my favorite movies of all time too. It's definately one of those rewatchable comedies, that you just love watching over and over again; it's smart comedy and really well written.

Band of Brothers is like crack. It's so well done you won't even notice it's 10 hrs.
Yep. The Emperor's New Groove (2000).

I've never seen Lilo & Stitch. Something about it just screamed "awful" so I've avoided it. Given disney's recent track record I didn't think I was missing out.
That's the same reason why I didn't watch The Emperor's New Groove.;) Oh yeah, same reason for Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear...and probably a couple more. Lilo and Stitch is great, although it has that neo-Disney feel.
I tried to watch Scarface once, but got distracted and missed most of it. .
You're not missing much. It is one of the most overrated movies of all time and it really isn't a good movie in my opinion. I can understand it's cult status, and its gangster appeal, but other than that... it's not some "awesome" movie you're missing in my opinion. But it's one of those that you have to watch so phonies don't go "Om4G?!1! you didn't watch teh scarface!!one1!" It's one of those you see just to say you watched it. Godfather is 100x better.

Oh yeah as for animated movies, watch all Disney :whistle2:D, and anime has a long history as well...so I'd say shorten it Miyazaki films, and Grave of the Fireflies which will make you cry like a bitch.

I'll make some recommendation of older movies I like:

(Hitchcock movies)
Vertigo
Rear Window
Rebecca
Notorious

(classic Western)
High Noon
Shane
The Searcher
Who Shot Liberty Valance

(classic noir)
Maltese Falcon
Laura
The Big Sleep
The Postman Always Ring Twice (Lana Turner version)

(Foreign)
Seven Samurai
Wild Strawberries
Rashomon

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, as I've updated the OP with all of the movies so far. Keep the suggestions coming. I'm sure there are plenty more good movies that I should watch.

EDIT: I noticed Platoon is on AMC tonight, so that should be the first movie to be crossed off the list.
Can't Hardly Wait - best teen movie ever
Get the fuck out of here

Say Anything, Mallrats, and pretty much all of the John Hughes movies are ALL better.

I totally disagree. Say Anything and all those John Hughes movies are cheesey as hell (although they are still good movies, I guess). Mallrats isn't really what I'd classify as a teen movie but it's still not as good.

"I gave her my heart, she gave me a pen." pales in comparison to "I'll kick everyone's ass in this room!" :D

a few i would reccomend that i didn't see anyone suggest:

the rocky horror picture show
the breakfast club

tombstone - i don't really like westerns either but these two i enjoyed
unforgiven

cape fear - i haven't seen the older version but the circa 1990 one with robert deniro is good

duck soup
animal crackers -very old marx bros. movies, very good

thats all i can think of off the top of my head.

You're saying that Can't Hardly Wait isn't cheesy? I just can't believe what I'm reading.

ok, i just ctrl+f'd the few pages in this thread and i didn't see these mentioned, but if i am reposting i apologize.

anyways, i won't over do it, but here's four off the top of my head:

-city of god

I second City of God. Also, have you seen any of the Dead movies, ala Dawn of the Dead or Day or the Dead? Add those if you haven't.

chungking express (1994)

i know you said you don't like dramas and romantic comedies, and i normally don't either, but i highly recommend this film. it has so much going for it. one thing that surprises me about it is how they were able to capture the energy and feeling of an action film in so many scenes when it really isn't an action flick.

your list is already pretty large and i hate making suggestions that have already been made. for great films check out anything criterion except for the rock and armageddon. how those got the criterion treatment is beyond me. if you dig asian cinema i can probably make a few more recommendations that others may not have thought or heard of.

as for the citizen kane thing...i still need and want to see this film. i'm embarassed to admit that i'm going to be a filmmaker in the near future and still haven't seen this film. from what i have seen of it, citizen kane is incredible.

that said, there is a difference between films and movies. films are an artform, movies are purely entertainment. occasionally they are both, but most of what is made today, especially from mainstream hollywood, is movies. you'll never convince someone who only likes movies that citizen kane is any good, just as you'll never convince someone who only likes films that clerks is any good.

I know. It is totally cheesy but I still love it. :D

I've added a bunch of the recent suggestions to the list to add nearly 20 more titles. The list is now over 250 total titles, and I've seen 25 on the list. I've been busy lately with school, but I've got quite a few titles queued to be seen. Also, I've created a blog to replace the need for this thread. So if you feel like suggesting titles, seeing what's been recently seen, etc. then check it out. I've only got the initial post up right now, but I'm going to make an update post soon. Thanks for the suggestions.

No, I haven't seen the Dead movies, but I don't care for horror movies, so they're not going on the list.

If you feel the need to bump this up, please don't and instead, go to the blog linked in my sig.

Natural City. It's often described as the "Korean version of Blade Runner."

Edit: Hmm... you haven't seen Blade Runner. Well, watch Blade Runner first, then watch Natural City.

I haven't seen a lot of the classics myself, but some movies I thought were cool:

Jackie Brown
Small Time Crooks
Freddy Got Fingered (I'm sorry, I love this film)
Triplets of Belville
Fargo (I hear it's amazing)
