I'm looking for movies that you love for whatever reason but the reviews don't really reflect it. Specifically here I'm using IMDB. The number after each title is the score IMDB has it at and then I say what I'd rate it personally. So what other movies are better than their scores?

The Burbs – has a 6.6 but should be more well known and watched. Great movie. 7.5 from me.
Land Of The Lost – 5.3 on imdb. Should be at least a point higher. Dumb yes but I really enjoy it.
Step Brothers - a 6.7. should be half a point higher. Hilarious movie.
Idiocracy – a 6.4 on imdb. This one should be a full point higher.
Lemony Snickets A Series Of Unfortunate Events - has a 6.8 but should be in the mid 7s
Disturbia – has a 6.9 which isn’t bad but this is a classic to me. 8.0
The Last Kiss – 6.6 should be low to mid 7s
Nothing But Trouble – 4.4...should be a couple points higher. Loved it when I was younger.
Dennis The Menace - 5.1 Don't really get why this one is so low. Should be around a 7.

Recently saw the darkest hour which has low ratings. 4.9 imdb.

It was so good. It's a survival alien type of movie which I am a sucker for but it was just nice. After the movie there were some clips that kinda showed a bit more what happens after and it felt so conclusive. Loved it.

Almost all martial arts movies - mainstream critics will bash the story and effects and completely miss the point of the movie

Almost all Adam Sandler / Will Ferrell / plenty of other low brow type humour movies (I'd even include Tyler Perry) - always 2/5 stars and low ratings, always funny as fuck to me. Recent case in point, That's My Boy. Great movie.

Personal favorite of mine, Kung Pow. It gets like, almost universally bashed lol

The problem with reviews is, they are opinion. So unless you agree with the persons opinion a review is a very bad thing to base a movie upon. Only until you've seen the movie yourself can you agree or disagree with a review. I think the system is kinda broken. It only works if you know a reviewer and usually agree or disagree with their reviews, then you have a better idea if you'd like the movie based on that.

I personally loved Sucker Punch last year(was in my top 3 for the year) and it sits at a 6.1 score. Easily an 8-8.5 to me.

I liked The Burbs, too! Bruce Dern makes the movie, even if it isn't that great. It's still fun.

Another movie the critics piled on was Hudson Hawk. It's got some funny moments, and you get Richard E. Grant, Sandra Bernhard, AND James Coburn hamming it up. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously. If you want to call it "so bad it's good," whatever. But it's a fun flick. However, if you want to enjoy it, you have to train yourself to ignore Andie Macdowell (sp?). She's awful.

I think movie reviewers watch films from an entirely different perspective from the general public and their reviews, while important for determining what fluffy art film that no one watched should win awards at the end of the year, aren't really the best way to determine what films you want to watch.

Bad movies can still be fun to watch. I love horror movies, and zombie movies, and Godzilla, and if I cared about what critics thought I'd never get to watch anything.

Observe and Report, off the top of my head. 5.9 on IMDB, 51% on RT. I can understand why some people hated it so vehemently, I'm sure most didn't go into it expecting a (really) dark comedy. I thought it was painfully hilarious and one of Seth Rogen's best roles.

Almost everything Adam Sandler has done over the past 10 years has been complete and utter shit.

Stomp the yard: i tend to hate and avoid "black movies" all the damn cliches and annoying stereotypes and just general bullshit of these movies im supposed to like or enjoy because im black. ive seen a number of them over the years on tv out of curiosity and they all succeed at being complete shit but stomp the yard is actually a good movie one i will watch if it comes on tv. the sequels have been shit though.

I think I understand why Will Ferrell movies are rated lower than their fans think they should be: Because fans forget that not everyone is a Will Ferrell fan, and if you're not a Will Ferrell fan, his act (most notably, the "man boy" and/or "cool southern idiot") isn't funny.

For me, there's approximately 2 or 3 scenes of every Will Ferrell movie that are funny. They run about 10-15 minutes taken together. That leaves me with ~60-80 minutes of movie that is nothing better than any of the other simple, predictable bullshit coming out of Hollywood. I'd imagine it's the same or worse for a lot of other non-fans, so why would his films be rated highly?

Trust me, there's more non-fans of Will Ferrell out there than you think. This goes for the Apatow Club films, too. That bullshit only goes so far.

Do you consider Double Take and Undercover Brother black movies? Or how about Barbershop, I'm Gonna Get You Sucka!, and Don't be a Menace? Or are you just referring to Tyler Perry-like movies that you hate? Not judging, just curious.

One rating I never understand is the original Karate Kid. I am usually pretty accurate in guessing a movie's imdb score, but I was way off with KK. I expected a score in the 7.7-7.9 range and was shocked to see it in the high 6s. Still a personal favorite of mine.

Actually just checked the score, and it seems its moved up to 7.1. Huzzah!

I completely agree with this. The first time I saw Seth Rogen get ready for his date I lost it. The end of that movie is fantastic as well. It really is a shame that movie didn't do better because he owns that character and that movie.

In general I tend to like Rogen's movies. People really shit on The Green Hornet, but I really enjoyed that movie as well. Some of the throw away lines in that movie are gold.

I agree with The Green Hornet. It wasn't just hilarious, but pretty subversive with the whole superhero and sidekick dynamic. There's actually some pretty deep shit in it about the genre itself. It's really too bad that it gets trashed.

I was going to post almost the exact same thing... My favorite flick that is universally bashed is Grandma's Boy.

I enjoyed his work in Everything Must Go and Stranger Than Fiction. I expected to hate Step Brothers but ended up enjoying it, even if the premise was pretty damn retarded.

huh valid question. undercover brother no. im not sure what youd call it but i actually liked that film they dealt with the usual black/white stereotypes but they did it in a very funny way. now compare it to a shit piece like pootie tang and you can understand a bit more of what i mean.

barbershop yeah but it was very well done not so much for the sequel.

im gonna get you sucka no. that , to me, was a comedy made with alot of black actors.kind of a spoof film.

all of tyler perrys movies oh hell yes his are the very definition of black movies and before anyone goes off i have seen a few just out of stupid curiosity and nothing being on tv but they suck.

dont be a menace no its more of a spoof film than anything else ripping on the whole ghetto/hood life explosion of films.

thats a damn shame id have expected its score to be higher now if they last one with hilary swank scored more yeah id cry lol. its such a classic film but its definitely one of those ones they could never make for kids nowdays.

and yes i remember the remkae for it and that thing was very white washed compared to what they did in the 80s. fuck look at gremlins it wouldnt stand a chance in this day either.

Step Brothers definately deserves higher. But Disturbia wtf. That movie was awful, it is no classic. Rear View Window is THE classic that Disturbia ripped off, and poorly. Disturbia was dog shit awful.
Agreed. I'm not sure where all the hate for this one comes from.
Probably because noone paid 12 bucks to see what would happen if Superman got shot in the eye with a bullet.

The Ring - 7.1

7.1 is way too low for a movie that successfully blended Japanese horror with Hitchcock suspense and spun off a cottage industry of Japanese horror Hollywood remakes. Should be 8.5, ideally 9.

This. He's not funny to me, at all. They keep playing that clip of him and Zach Galafinakis (sp) at the ball park on the radio, and I'm starting to get annoyed. I have never seen him in a role I enjoyed. When my old study group talked about movies, 1 out of 7 of us liked Will Ferrell, while 5 of us couldn't stand him at all. I know it's not real numbers, but yea, there are a lot less Will Ferrell fans than people think.

And Adam Sandler... I never liked this movies. His CDs in the 90s were funny, but that was it.

Never been a fan of SNL either.

As for being on-topic,

Gattaca has a 64 rating on metacritic, but I think it's more in the 80-85 range. One of my favorite dystopian movies.

Dark City has a 66 rating, but should be a little higher. The presentation isn't as good as The Matrix, even though the latter borrowed at least a bit from Dark City.

His CDs were pretty good. I remember listening to them with headphones on and cracking up on family vacations, afraid to explain what i was listening to and why it was so funny.

Mars Attacks! - 6.3 on IMDB

I get that the movie is stupid and over the top, but I think a lot of people miss the point that it's supposed to be stupid and over the top. The movie is Tim Burton's tribute to old B-movies from the 50s and 60s, and being someone that likes to watch those movies every so often, I always appreciated how well Burton was able to take the big budget and special effects movie-making of today and approach it in an Ed Wood-ian way. Plus, how can you go wrong with Jack Nicholson as president?
Lots of people hated Cable Guy and I don't know why. I thought it was comedy genius.
I think people were expecting ace ventura or dumb and dumber and got something darker. I really liked it.

Yeah I need to see Rear Window I guess but pretending that didnt exist and you dont hate Shia Lab..whatever his name is, I don't see how that movie (Disturbia) is not awesome.
