In August I am moving from Fayetteville, NC to Portales, NM. All in all, it looks like it will be a fun experience....EXCEPT............

I was looking at my high speed internet options, and I found out I have only one option. I will be moving from Road Runner Cable Access with 3.0mb service to Yucca communcations DSL with 640k service. And, lucky me, it will still cost me the same 50 dollars a month. What a fucking rip off.

You have my sympathy. I moved from $40 comcast 3MBPS to $45 1.5Mbps DSL from Quest as my only option. Not having a choice really sucks.

You have no sympathy from me. I lived in an area where 22.6k was the only option except for satilite which would have been $100 a month for 640kbs.

Aww poor baby.
I got 384mbps from sbc yahoo. Thinking about switching to something a little faster though
Holy hell.

Sounds like a typo though.

Portales, a strictly college town. My friend lives there, but lives in dorms so he has a decent connection. I live in Albuquerque, NM by the way. Why are you moving to Portales?

Supply and demand is a bitch, but it all comes down to how bad you want it. Plus I hear NM which I think is New Mexico, is pretty nice so you could spend more time outside. :)

Residential DSL pricing for new customers only:

Qwest DSL 1.5M down/864 up Qwest: $28.00 I-NET: $36.99
I was actually there when they first launched back in '95/'96 and I can tell you they sure as hell didn't have those speeds then.

Hm...

I had to live with 256 KBs DSL from Qwest for 2 years. Yes, I realize I come off as a whiney bitch...but it sucked having broadband that peaked out at 25.6 KB/s. Five times quicker than dial-up sounds good, but it's no where near what I'm at now. (hundreds of KB/s, which isn't insane, but it's a good speed). Anyway, it was like paying for broadband but not getting broadband. Luckily, I didn't pay. I still felt like my dad was getting ripped off, though, and it took me dozens of conversations to convince them to switch.
