I'm working on an end of the year project for school. I am developing a market plan for a new product to be introduced into an existing market. With all the PSP hype, I'm gonna base my plan on Microsoft releasing a handheld. I know its gonna incorporate a lot of the features of the PSP, but it is also gonna interact with the xbox is some manner.

Throw out your ideas about what you think this "new" Mircrosoft handheld device should do, what it should look like, media formats to use, online capabilities, pc and xbox networking capabilities, launch titles, etc... All ideas are welcomed including the ones poking fun at such a device and negatives about the idea. I have to discuss the current market, competition, pricing and other "marketing" issues.

Thanks and btw I'll be taking credit for all original thought discussed in this thread.

i figured i'd better. don't want people coming to this thread with high hopes only to be let down. doesn't actually encourage participation.

Well, I thought I had read that Microsoft is looking to create more of a Home entertainment device with XBox 2, as opposed to a strictly gaming platform, so you could incoporate a similar strategy into the handheld.

For instance, my phone can be programmed as a TV remote, garage door opener, and a bunch of other crap. The Microsoft handheld could incorporate similar types of functions.

The lovely N-Gage does lots of functions.

For your project, do whatever the N-Gage isn't. Winner is you.

Think of all the things you would want out of a portable device. Such as:
-WiFi
-PDA like functionality (being able to receive email and surf the web)
-MP3 player
-The ability to play/send movies to it
-The ability to interact and be aware of all your entertainment devices (TV remote, the ability to stream video files etc)
-A bigger LCD screen than the psp
-Analog sticks so you can play halo and other fps games the way they are meant to be played

That's all I can think of as of right now but you catch my drift.

have it be the same size and weight as an xbox, but with a tiny screen where the green xbox jewel is on top(yep, circular screen) and some buttons right near it.

I would emphasize on it's online capabilities. Which, it being a Microsoft gaming product, should be far superior to the PSP's.

It would have to leverage Microsoft's existing strength in the PDA market but in a way that doesn't anger its licensees or drive the price too high. Being able to add a hard drive to use it as a Portable Media Player (PMP) would also be a must. The best bet might be to work out a platform license that allows companies like Dell and Creative to make their own licensed models with a certification of compatibility. The big issue is how you allow PocketPC apps to run while maintaining a market for games manufactured exclusively through Microsoft to enable the royalty revenue stream that is the primary reason for producing a console style product in the first place.

The name cannot be Minix. That is taken.
