Ms Pacman hits XBLA 400 points. Your thoughts? *OUT NOW*
Funny to see the pathetic 12 year olds in a tizzy about a classic game release.
Funny to see YOU defending fucking Ms. Pac-Man to death. She's a fictional character, and a mutilated circle at that. No reason to get a boner over "her." Give it a rest.

The reason people are in a "tizzy" isn't because it's Ms. Pac-Man, it's because it's the latest in a long line of disappointements.
25 year old crappy arcade game = lame
Noooooo!!!!! While I admit it's lame for an XBLA release especially in light of how Nintendo is posting ROM after ROM game after game for the virtual console but Ms. Pac-man is awesome even to this day and the arcade version is still more fun to play than 95% of everything currently being released.

I am sorry, didn't they release several original content games in a row. If you don't like them, then you really have nothing to complain about, as they have delivered original content. Maybe arcade isn't for you. . I usually agree with a lot you have to say, but to be bitching about 3 off weeks (granted I wanted ms pacman) on arcade right after the holidays. There are plenty of full priced games to be playing. I posted an article from 1up talking about how they probably released ms pac man to coincide with the free maps in gears, as no one would buy a new original arcade game, when you can continue to play your copy of gears with 2 free maps. Don't give me they blew there lead with arcade, as the thing wasn't supposed to be a system seller. Don't tell me how nintendo came in and stole msft thunder, as i own 3 nintendo vc games, and I own/want more titles available on the 360. It comes down to a matter a preferences. Some people want to play ms pac man.

Agreed. Ms. Pac Man is hardly a lame game. Is it lame as the first release on XBLA in two weeks? Sure, but not on its own as a game. Kids these days...

My "good friend" just happened to be up this morning when this game hit. Having 500-and-change points to burn, he instantly downloaded it. He tells me that the default difficulty is almost certainly ratcheted up, but more importantly, that the game keeps disconnecting him from Live, which automaticallly reconnects everytime he returns to the dashboard. An 11 MB game that got delayed a week and they still have a major gaffe like that (patch pending or not). Sad.

I'm glad it was my good friend and not me!!

Maybe for the kids who weren't around when this crap was in arcades, but for me, who has been there and done that, I want something a bit more original. Hell, Novadrome was more fun than this.

We get games like Rally-X, something we got for FREE with Ridge Racer. Whoopee. These "retro' classics aren't something we should be paying full price for, and that's not my main arguement. If you want to release Mrs. Pac-man, great. Have fun. But don't waste a week on it. There are enough games out there were we could have a 'classic' every week (for 200 points) and something new at least every other week. It's pathetic.

And if you're going to release classic games, don't release subsequent sequels seperately. You want to charge 400 (or even 500) for both Pac-Mans? Fine. Go for it.

The fact of the matter is that Xbox Live Arcade is not going to please everyone. If they release a classic arcade game (Ms. Pac-Man, Dig-Dug etc.) then people bitch because it's the same ol' same. If it's a new game (Novadrome, Small Arms etc.) then they bash it because it's not good enough. Bottom line is that people are always going to be bitching about shit. "It's too expensive!" "I already own that game" "Why isn't there a new release this week?" "XBLA is dead".

I can already hear the complaints about Castlevania SotN. "The PS version is way better" "They should have left the audio intact" BLAH BLAH BLAH....Shut the fuck up already and be grateful that we even have an XBL Arcade at all. Microsoft could've perfectly made the 360 without it. Besides, if you don't like it then don't buy them.

Yes the difficulty has definately been cranked up... I used to play this often in the arcade/pizza places back in the day and I could easily get to level 9-11 on one quarter. This morning, i could only get to Level 4... I DID get the Perfect Achievement however, so I huess it wasn't a total loss...

Concerning your friend, I was not disconnected from Live while playing. I used to get constant disconnects from Live until I found out my Router was bad. Make sure his internet connection is working as it should. It has nothing to do with the game.

For me, it was 400 points well spent... Now BRING ON WORMS and Castlevania: SOTN!!!!

Played the demo and I'm shocked at how responsive this game is compared to Pac-Man, I might bite and get it, this is the reason I passed up on Pac-Man but Ms Pac-Man seems like a lot harder game. When you bite the ghosts the return a lot quicker.

BTW: There's a free Pink ghost gamerpic for downloading the trial version.

That's not the point, and you know it.

If everyone and their brother buys Pac-Man 2 and I don't, I don't lose this time. If Microsoft sees this and keeps releasing sequel after sequel of mediocre games, then it does affect me.

As I said, I don't mind classic releases. I don't think they should be 400 points. I also think there needs to be interspersing between old and new releases. I'm sure people wouldn't care to see Space Quest (Vivendi could use the money), Duke 3D or Elevator Action. I would, if they are done correctly. I guess I'm tired of seeing titles I can get in a hundred other places for free.

Well, it's the difficulty and trying to play the game with the controller. Blech!

My "good friend" called me to tell me that whatever the problem with Live and this game was, it's fine now.

Besides, if you don't like it then don't buy them.

This may be THE most parrotted and overly simple-minded phrase on gaming message boards in the last year or so. See, the trick is that most people complaining do like the games that they're bitching about, or at least want to like them, but exorbitant prices and/or microtransactions are really derailing their Love Train for said game. If, for example, Halo 3 is Microtransaction Mania*, you can bet your ass I'm going to bitch--a lot--but you can be even more certain that right now it's a game I'm looking forward to with the sort of verve I usually reserve for huge film franchises...and Radiohead albums.

*--It's going to be pretty bad, I sense, but 'EA' bad? Time will tell.

I disagree. I def see your point, and I understand exactly what you mean. But when did Pac-Man come out? August? It's January. If say Pac-Man came out "2nd week of August" and Ms Pac-Man came out..say "first week of September" then I think your theory would be right. We all know that with XBLA, we are getting arcade games. Classic/Retro arcade games. But we also do get original content, and you have to understand that it's much easier to get a copy of Ms Pac-Man, add some achievements and make it suitable for 360..then making a brand new original game. Those games are going to take longer to develope..so in the meantime we have to deal with these classics. At least they attempt to make every Wednesday the day where a game comes out.

If XBLA was JUST original titles..we would probably get 1 new game once a month or once every other month. At least this keeps the XBLA growing.

Think about it this way. Think about people who may get a 360 THIS Christmas (yes in 12 months from now, LOL). Well, by then there's a potential that the XBLA list will be 30-40+ more games on what it is now. Those people will have the option to say "Ok, I liked Ms Pac-Man better then Pac-Man.. ::purchases::" When you have a 360 and have had it since launch..I can def understand where people are coming from by the weekly releases of disappointments.

Think of it this way: Greg Canessa himself said he only wants one definitive version of a series on Xbox Live Arcade.

So what the fuck is this all about?

Like I said earlier, I only got Pac-Man because I figured the Ms. would never come out because I listened to this douchebag. I'm not mad about Ms. Pac-Man, i'll buy it tonight, I'm mad that I wasted money on Pac-Man though.

If we're getting Ms Pac-Man, there is NO REASON we shouldn't get Mortal Kombat 2 and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. None at all.

I've got a sinking feeling that if they went straight with Ms. Pac-man that there would be a fair amount of complaints of "Where's regular Pac-man? I hate this pink bow shit", despite Ms. Pac-man being the better game.

I would have much rather had that, and MS can stick to its "one definitive version of a series" idea.

Everyone who is anyone knows Ms. Pac-Man is clearly the superior game.

Oh YES to BOTH of those games!! If they both sold well (UMK3, SF2 HF that is) then I wouldn't see why not!

Yeah, as would I. But like I've said for a while, Namco is clearly given carte blache regarding arcade releases. I'm pulling this completely out of my ass, but I'd be willing to bet Midway wanted to release MKII over UMK3. The fan base is obviously behind them, but Canessa, in his infinite lisp-y wisdom, probably told them to piss off and release UMK3 because its not as readily available.

And that's fine. But there is so much other fare out there that could be translated that's not being touched. My main problem with Pac-Man & Mrs. Pac-Man is the fact it's been available on tons of formats. Why pay $5 when I can play a Java version for free? Achievements? Those only go so far. Hell, Rally-X is Pac-Man with a car. Repetition, for 400 points.

My wish list (for true 'arcade' games):

Cruis'n USA
Cruis'n World
Elevator Action
Star Wars Arcade
1942
Bump n' Jump
Die Hard Arcade
Road Rash (w/ original soundtrack)
Hydro Thunder with new levels (I know)
Super Off-Road
OutRun
TMNT
Tiger Heli

Others:
Wasteland
Ecco

Blame Microsoft, not the game. Unless you are a 12 year old don't act like one.

I bought Ms. Pac-Man last night and it's great! Much better and more responsive
than the original, which I did not buy.

I think including both games for the same price would have been fair,
but frankly with Ms. Pac-Man being so much better I don't even care to play Pac-Man.
Yeah, as would I. But like I've said for a while, Namco is clearly given carte blache regarding arcade releases.
If that was true (and if they weren't afraid of a little extra work) I wouldn't mind paying $20 for a special GunCon and, say, 800 to 1200 points for ports of Point Blank, Point Blank 2, Point Blank 3...

Then again, I must still be dreaming. That won't happen.
I don't understand why MS can only launch 1 game a week.
i would assume, that unlike nintendo, who has a huge catalog of older games for their virtual console, msft doesn't has that much to release
I don't understand why MS can only launch 1 game a week.
We have covered this multiple times. To get even an old classic port on XBLA requires at least 6 months.

It requires:

1) A developer willing to do it and fund it themselves (Microsoft doesn't do any in-house)
2) embedding live presence code
3) embedding achievements
4) overhauling any multiplayer code to work with live (often the biggest job and means a large rewrite in some cases)
5) Lots and lots of testing by the developer and Microsofts cert team (takes at least 2 months usually)

So the difference is that Nintendo slaps on a simple emulator for an old console and throws unmodified games at it from their library with little effort. There is NO emulation going on with XBLA, and whether you understand it or not, the turnaround is about six months of dev time for an old classic port and 9 months for an original.

That's no explanation as to why they can only launch 1 per week.

How many devs do you think do the exact same thing in parallel?

I guarantee you there are plenty of developers waiting to launch games on XBLA.

I'll probably get it just for the achievements. I already have the ones from Pac-man. There's just something about getting achievements that make me want to play a game more.
