The Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance (MSDNAA) is something that most universities and colleges are a part of. Through this, students in participating schools in eligible programs (usually Computer Science, Engineering, etc but sometimes Business and stuff as well) can get software for free or reduced prices.

You can have a LEGAL OS. The Vista edition that the schools have is Business.

How it works for each school is different. Most offer ISO downloads or can ship you a CD for a fee. My school makes us go and burn our own copy from a certain room on campus.

Many might know about this, but I know a lot of people don't. Use the link above to search for your school. Doesn't hurt to try.

When searching, put the city the campus is in located in. Not the major city the campus is near. For example, Burnaby and not Vancouver for Simon Fraser University (in BC). If your university/college has a satellite campus that you go to, you can search the city that the satellite campus is located in (so using SFU again, Surrey not Burnaby).

Getting user IDs and stuff is different for each school. Follow the link and figure it out is the best I can say =/

Thanks OP. I've heard of programs like this and will be taking advantage of it now that I'm in the CSCI program at my school.

Awesome, my school offers this in the library apparently. And to own a CD/DVD version is only $13.00 bucks. ;)It looks like they have other useful software available as well.

Oh man... no Vista for my school.:whistle2:(

The CS school has it but you need a CS login and password to get it. All my school has is XP SP1 (no SP2).

Oh well, thanks OP.

Your school needs to pay microsoft to recieve the software to use. Plus I might add you get a 1 time use install key if you use the key again it won't work, though while you're still in school you can simply ask the person who runs the MSDNAA stuff to give you another key.

Of course there is a Bios Emulation work around for vista nowadays anyway.

And Visio is a program that lets you easily design flow charts, ERDs, process models.

Oh nice find!
I'm going into the Business school at Northern Colorado next year, and they offer Vista Business as a download :)

Just a note since I haven't seen too much detail in the previous posts.. but if your school is listed under the MSDNAA program on the site, they have the software at the school. Usually, they have a teacher's assistant or something maintain the site and licenses. However, the school of business and/or your IS department will have the software and distribute the keys. They can literally burn you copies and give a key on the spot. I was given a copy of all versions of Vista w/key, just haven't installed it yet. I've also gotten Visio Pro, Access, SQL Server 05, and Visual Studio. I really like the MSDNAA program; without it, classes would be even more expensive by having to buy the software.

Basically, if you don't see it on the site.. you can almost certainly get it at your school of business. Hell, if you're a freshman and plan on getting into database systems or programming, I recommend it. Go buy a couple of beginners books and screw around with it, so you'll go into classes with a good edge up on things. Also, if you plan on going into management, you'll need Visio for charts/diagrams as well.
