multi player/coop shooter recommendation

Casual gamer here so my terminology might be off. Anyway I am having a family get together and want to have mini lan setup ready to entertain the kids (and of course myself). I have two 360's that are both connected to my home network. I do not have gold so I am looking for something that will work locally with the system link. Are there any shooter games that will allow a split screen on two machines connected together so 4 players can play at the same time? I assume most of these types of games pit each player against each other (is this technically called multiplayer?) which is fine, but are there any games that will allow the 4 players to play as a team and complete the missions (is this coop?). Finally, will I need two copies of the the game?

Thanks,

I have to second Vegas. I really enjoyed the coop aspect of that game.

Halo is always a good standby as well as Left 4 Dead (either 1 or 2).

Agree with what everyone else here has said - Left 4 Dead 1/2, Vegas, Halo. All of those are good. And yeah, you're going to need 2 copies of any of these games for system link.

If you really want to save money you can always go to XBLA by getting one of their 4 player games. TMNT comes to mind and you only need to drop 5-10 bucks and have 4 controllers. Im sure there are more, but thats your best bet if you want the cheapest and easiest route, plus if the kids and yourself are casual this might be the best bet. Now dont get me wrong, the above suggestions are good, but might be more of a pain to setup than its worth if its only a once in a while thing. I cant stand tying to keep track of all my controllers much less set up 2 TVs, 2 Xboxes, System Link them and track down 2 copies of each game. Another good option would be to get a group game like Rockband/GH or maybe scene it.

Borderlands is a good one for four people but I am honestly not sure if it lets you get 4 people playing via 2 machines that are linked together or if it even lets you go on XBL with two people on the same console. You would probably have to look into that to see if it supports your setup.

I think your biggest issue won't be finding games for four players but simply finding ones that support the local system link with two people per console. Good luck and let us know what you find that works.

Yeah, but he said it would be set up for kids. And preferred a shooter.

So that rules out zombie games, otherwise I would have mentioned L4D.

If you want to go with a cheap ass route .. grab Aegis Wing for free on XBLA. I think that's Local Multiplayer (up to 4). I'm too lazy to look. TMNT: Turtles in Time would be awesome as well, it definitely has up to 4 players with Local Multiplayer. And then you would only need the 1 xbox set up.
