Multiplayer debate

CAGiversary!
I know if in the minority when I say that I don't give a rat's a@@ about multiplayer. Sure it's fun to play another person if the game involves sports or fighting but why all the fuss about other games?

Do games like Splinter Cell, Ratchet and Clank or Resident Evil really need multiplayer? To me nothing tops a good single player game experience.

Are people just not able to amuse themselves these days?

Comments?

Wrong forum. Anyways, I believe that the multiplayer only adds to the experience. Sure, the single player can be good, but why not include both? You're bound to get sick of single player eventually, in which case you can move on to multiplayer. Also, some games are focused entirely on multiplayer. So, to answer your question, Yes, games need multiplayer.

There was a time when I would have agreed with what you're saying. But when the multiplayer for games like SC and R&C is so damn compelling, there's little reason not to play with others. I rarely play single-player games anymore; not when I can be having more fun playing with or against friends online.

Also, moving this to General Gaming.

The older you get the more useless multiplayer becomes. I have no use for it anymore because with a more than full time job the chances of having people over to my house on a regular basis to play video games is slim to none...

Personally, I like a good satisfying single player mode to my games. I play multiplayer from time to time, but well over 90% of my gaming time is single player.

Are people just not able to amuse themselves these days?

I'll assume this was meant in a joking way, but if not

You have a good point. Most people my age aren't throwing a Lan party on a regular basis.

Mods : please move this thread to the XBOX forum if possible.......

Which is why online-enabled multiplayer is perfect for me. I work a full time job from home (telecommute) while all of my friends live in another state. With online multiplayer, I can still play games with them (console and PC) and chat. It's pretty damn convenient.

I've always enjoyed single play much more. I rarely have people over, but when I do I usually end up schooling them for an hour (because we play the games that I own and have already mastered). I've tried Xbox Live, but that's just a haven for tools with an attitude.

For me, Multi is fun for a very short time but then gets old fast. Once the better player is established, it just becomes repetitive.

Resident Evil ABSOLUTELY needs multiplayer. It needs to be on PC, and it needs to be like an MMORPG, set in a city that's double and a half the size of GTA:SA.. banding in groups to take on tons and tons of zombies.. and when everyone on that server has turned into a zombie, maybe it can reset or something and everyone starts out again.

omg

after reading that, I think my wallet opened itself. I would pay so much money for an awesome game like that.

But should Splinter Cell ever had multiplayer? Absolutely not, but no one would have bought it for 49.99 if it hadn't. Should R&C? Absolutely, it's a platformer-ish type game, right? All platformer and platformer-ish games should have an online mode. I'm confused as to why Mercenaries isn't online.

Part joking :) ......... It is a little scary though

You already had it in the Xbox forum, which was the incorrect one. That's why it was moved. You're talking multiplayer in general, which goes in General Gaming.

i personally only play multiplayer games (mostly anyway). the thought of even playing against computer AI bores the hell out of me. the only games ive played single player r those that r just insanely good (imo, mgs series, final fantasy 7, 9, 10, 11 for example).

back in the snes/genesis days, i only used to play games if my bros/friends were sitting with me, ive just never liked the idea of playing alone. even games like starcraft, warcraft 3 and stuff which ive played endlessly online ive never touched the single player. theres only a few games that can hold my attention in single player, most i start and leave off very soon cause it gets boring.

That may work for you but I still disagree (personally). There's just no way I can schedule time to play video games with friends online or otherwise. I just have too much other crap going on. I get home from work around 9 p.m. on an average night. By the time I eat dinner and hang out with the wife it's after 10 and I'm ready to go to sleep.

This leaves the weekends as the only other time to play and with regular chores around the house and a 3-month old daughter that I want to spend every second she is awake with I can sneak in about 2 hours of game playing after everyone is asleep. The chances of one of my friends wanting to play online at that particular time are so slim that it makes my need for multiplayer in any form completely useless.

I do wish there was more time in the day though because multiplayer is a blast but the older I get the more video games take a back seat to other things going on in my life... oh well, maybe when my daughter is old enough multiplayer will be fun again...

certain games, like goldeneye or mario kart 64 were defined by their multiplayer experiences- even tho they had solid single player games. Sometimes multiplayer is thrown in as an afterthought to bulk up the options, sometimes it greatly enhances the game and gives it much longer legs. Not every game needs a multiplayer component, but when it is done well it can be awesome. There is a difference between online multiplayer and splitscreen multiplayer- each having their own advantadges and disadvantadges.

you can drink by yourself and have a good time, but sometimes you want to drink with others

My little bro and sister have a gamecube, and I go over there and we all jam on multiplayer together, and we have a blast. Crystal Chronicles, 4 swords, Mario Tennis, Smash Brothers.

We can all play at once and that makes a big difference. I would otherwise have very little in common with my younger sister (15 year age difference!)

I too like single player games. but Multiplayer is great, and Nintendo is king of multiplayer on one system.

But what Nintendo fails to see is, when I go back to my townhouse, I live alone. At home, to me, online IS multiplayer. I joined a Clan on Halo2's Xbox Live and haven't been happier.

I had a coworker over, and we did split screen Halo 2 coop with his brother and friend who live 8 hours away. that's awesome, and with the right buddies, you just can't beat multiplayer.

Although Xbox live can be a great, untapped source for random assholes! Whew. Some of the people on there are unbelievable. Others are cool, but you get me.

I loved multiplayer in grade school and especially in college, when there were always lots of people around to play with. However, now I moved to TX and I am married and have a full-time job, so I don't really play multi-player at all anymore. So I appreciate better single-player modes now.

This sort of leads up to another rant :D

The obsession with "replay value". Who's spending 20 hours to finish a game and then replaying it?

I don't care if the game is Halo 2 or Kabuki Warriors, once I'm done, I'm done.

That's understandable with the hours you are working and a baby. I'm going to be in the same boat in a while since my wife is pregnant. My coworkers and I have a scheduled Thursday game night and we send emails out if we're going to be online on other nights of the week.

I agree with you now, after being on CAG almost 2 years, and having nearly 100 unplayed games on my shelf. I just want to beat the game I'm on and move onto the next one, to try and lessen the pile.

Back in the day though, I'd only be able to affored 1 new game a month, sometimes 1 every 2 months (and I didn't have a huge collection to fall back on). Replay Value is still important today, as most people out there don't have huge collections to fall back on like we do.

If it's a game like Kabuki Warriors, I can understand buying it and beating it just to be done with it. Most people who buy Halo 2 don't buy it to beat it and be done with it. They do it for the multiplayer.

No, but games like Halo and Socom DO need multiplayer. :D

The only time I play with someone else is my g/f, all the other times, I'm flyin' solo. Although there are a few games I'd play online if they didn't have a fee; games like City of Heros, Rome: Total War, Sims and UT2004. Basically though, I play by myself 98% of the time. I don't really think you NEED multiplayer, but it does add an extra gamming element for certain types of games. I do agree though that most games don't need multiplayer.
