FBI: Muslims detained at stadium weren't profiled

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (AP) -- Five Muslim football fans were detained and questioned during a game at Giants Stadium because they were congregating near an air duct on a night former President Bush was in the stadium, the FBI said Wednesday.

Some of the Muslims said they did not know they were in a sensitive area, and they complained that they were subjected to racial profiling while they were praying, as their faith requires five times a day.

"I'm as American as apple pie and I'm sitting there and now I'm made to feel like I'm an outsider, for no reason other than I have a long beard or that I prayed," said Sami Shaban, a 27-year-old Seton Hall Law School student who lives in Piscataway.

At a news conference Wednesday, Shaban said he and four friends had just gotten to the September 19 New York Giants-New Orleans Saints game when they left their seats to pray. Around halftime, 10 security officers and three state troopers approached the men and told them to come with them, Shaban said.

The men were questioned and then were not allowed to return to their seats, but were instead assigned to seats in another section, Shaban said. Three guards stood near them, and escorted them to their cars when they left the stadium, he said.

FBI agent Steven Siegel, a spokesman for the bureau's FBI office, said the men had aroused suspicion because they were congregating near the main air intake duct. Bush was in the stadium that night as part of a fundraising campaign he and former President Clinton were leading for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

"You had 80,000 people there, Bush 41 was there, and you had a group of gentlemen gathering in an area not normally used by the public right near the main air intake duct for the stadium, and a food preparation facility," Siegel said. "It was where they were, not what they were doing."

The site is now fenced off and is no longer accessible to fans.

"We do not profile anyone that comes into our arena, stadium or racetrack on any basis," said George Zoffinger, president of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which operates the stadium. "There was no profiling of our customers. I want to make that clear."

Obviously if it was a bunch of Orthodox Jews praying or Christians the same things would happen. I love how they claim profiling wasnt a factor when it obviously was.

waitafuckinminute...Giants stadium is in JERSEY!?!

Well, I forsee your post turning into a thread smarmily arguing the reasons for and against profiling, since it's clear that these dudes were profiled.

Congrats myke, I think you're officially the first human being to use the words "dudes" and "smarmily" in the same sentence....
Perhaps the infinite scream was the knowledge that one day his painting of the event would become such a smarmily iconic shorthand for angst that it would lose its power; its hard to feel dread when the screaming dude is on some VP of Advertising's tie. More's the pity.
I should try that when i'm out to a football game one night and see what happens hahaha. I am pretty sure people might look at me like i'm a looney or something.

Muslims are being a direct target tho, so i aint shocked about what happen, its sad tho.
The very *fact* that you know that...
Well I'll be damned... That was just a playful remark, but now I feel like an ass. I just thought it was funny because when you read it aloud it sounds so awkward, like something Spock would have said in an odd attempt at humor on a Star Trek movie. oh well, not the first time I've been wrong... On with the discussion about the topic.

Ya, I know, but I was bored so I just typed both words into Google and scanned down to see if any were in the same sentence, and sure enough about 6 or 7 down, there it was

Yeah Giants stadium is in Jersey. As for the Muslims...hell yeah if I seen these guys in a corner doing some shit I would be all over it. I guarantee that ANY of you would run for cover and turn pale white if you saw these guys. For those that don't live near any muslim populations you have no idea how upsetting it is to see a young group of muslims together with bags. I been in that position MANY times and normally I just get away (i.e. get off the damn train). It's damn annoying. Racial profiling...yeah whatever that's the politcal correct crap to say. I prefer calling it common sense.

I lived in toronto, which has the highest percentage of muslims of any city in north america. My university was loaded with hijabs, religious dress etc. Muslims were everywhere. Muslims in malls, classrooms, studen organizations, music clubs, sports, busses, subways etc. When I walked into an apartment building once I saw only about 2 non muslims, the rest muslims. Including about 5, all dressed in religious attire and with beards, walking off an elevator. Believe me, if I was scared by muslims I would have run screaming back across the border.

If you lived in Oklahoma City, would you be skedaddling from groups of white people?

EDIT: Let me get this straight: by "it's damn annoying," do you mean "It's damn annoying that these poor people are being treated this way by authorities, the government, and a large portion of American society," or "It's damn annoying that I'm such a fucking racist asshole that I have to inconvenience my perfectly unimportant life for a minute because I'm such a racist asshole I can't feel comfortable around people with BAGS"?

Because if it's the former, kudos. ;)

Evidently you have never known people who are Muslim. Get to know some Muslims and I guarantee you'll find out that they're just like you or me, just that they follow a different religion. It's sad that you fear and loathe people you don't know or seem to understand.

And what should have been done? Let them go, and if something did happen then what?

I guarentee people would be screaming the administration dropped the ball. All this money being put into tighter security is being wasted.

It's better to be safe than sorry.
They should stop black people who drive nice cars.
I've read articles quoting police who say that practice is widespread in their department. Though add "blacks in nice neighborhoods" to that as well.

I wish cops would profile people that drive around at night that play music with their subwoofers turned up really really loud. I'm tired of hearing every jerk who drives slowly down my road, or parks in front of my building with their music thumping.
