CAGiversary!
My Adventures in Blockbuster Trade-in Promotions - OR - Hobbiteering

So as you all know... Blockbuster Video (even the non-Gamerush branches here in Manhattan) have started the ridculously loophole-laden trade-in promos including...

- at LEAST $8.00 store credit per DVD
- get $5 extra dollars per game when you trade in three or more (thats extra on top of the normal tradein value)

Knowing this... and starting out with about a $50.00 investment including...
- multiple purchases of Blockbuster's own used DVD's for $4.99
- multiple sub 2.99 used DVD's from EBgames (with the GMR card)
- and multiple copies of The Hobbit for PS2 for $4.99 (Columbus Day)

After all of this... I've now legitmately racked up over $500.00 credit at blockbuster... which is good at Blcokbuster.com and even GameRush (but thats a ways off for me...)

Anyway...
I just wanted to share this with everyone.... I'm a pretty busy guy normally... but I've hade some free time this past weekend... and sure, I may have more Blockbuster's in my area than you... but that shouldnt stop you from taking this month's offer to its fullest extent.

I urge you all... look further into this yourself.
Its worth every trip.

I'm out.!

Hey... what dvd's have you been buying from blockbuster for $5... I might just do a little trading (credit for more credit)

Man every blockbuster near me sucks. They don't even take trade in's on used DVD's. The only ones that they offer are the crap that they have rented out already.
Hey... what dvd's have you been buying from blockbuster for $5... I might just do a little trading (credit for more credit)
Look for titles like...

Nobody's Baby (w/ Skeet Ulrich and Gary Oldman)
Landspeed (w/ Billy Zane)
Ressurection Blvd. Series (Sold individually)
Crime Spree (w/ Harvey Keitel)
Ebenezer (w/ Rick Shroeder)
Punch (w/ sonja bennet)

they've all been going for 4.99.... and trading back in for $8.
How much store credit did they give you for hobbit?
The Hobbit for PS2 is currently $12
Xbox version is $10

Then... they add $5 on each when you trade in three games... just dont do more than 2 of the same title at once per day.
500, rotflmao! I must admit I stand in amazement at all the people here who find ways to actually make money.
thanks... though its not really MONEY.....

its credit... just trying to cover all my bases for new releases.... and xmas gifts for the fam.

take advantage... but dont make it a career.
wow is it cash or Block Buster credit? Dam i wish i invested in Cheap crappy dvds early..what a way to make some billz.
credit credit credit credit......

but i suppose you could buy stuff and sell it for cash....
but i dont swing that way.

way too much work.

Thanks for taking the time to list those... I will check it out tommorow at a couple of gamerush/blockbusters...

Well, the real question though, is what is your % of return? How much did you have to spend to get the $500?

I have been getting between a 150-300% return on the FYE trade-ins (pay $8 for Motor Trend Lotus Challenge, trade in for $27, etc.) or I have been trading the GC version of the Hobbit for $25 at BB, paid $10.

Try to stick with items that have a killer margin!

sheer volume also produces good returns
(a $2 profit on 50 things is a $100)

You could just use the credit to buy $100 gift cards and then sell them on eBay. I think they go for $90 or so if you offer free shipping. Somebody on another thread about this said they will let you buy gift cards with the credit.

I can confirm this because i bought a $25 gift card using some of my credit to give my brother for his birthday

:?: I hope your talking cheap items with $2 profits. I only really go for things that would double my money, so $2 profit would have to be on a $2 item.

By the way OP what movies did you get from EB that are $2.99?

i traded in six gc/ps2 games at my blockbuster, and they only offered me an extra 5 dollars. Isnt it supposed to be 5 dollars extra per game? They wouldnt do it no matter how much i pointed to the sign that said it. what do i do?

ask for a supervisor or manager and be reasonable, the deal only is good on ps2, xbx, gc and gba games and you get 3 extra dollars per psone game. if you were trying dreamcast or n64 games it wont work.

well... dont sign for anything... point to the paper in on the counter...

explain... "per game"

not... "after three are traded you will get 5 on top".....

and yes... speak to a manager... but in most cases the managers are just as illiterate as he clueless workers... try as hard as you can... then refuse to trade it in for less... then walk away politely.... call corporate... whatever.

the bottom line is...

BE PERSISTENT! AND SMILE! :D

can you pre-oder a DS at gamerush ? I would try this but there are like no games that I really want. But if I could turn the credit towards a DS I would be all over this.

i'm quite certain you can... problem is....

GameRush's are only in Staten Island.... which... even though its physically like... 15 miles from here in Manhattan... means its like three hours away.

i'd totally love to go out and buy up everything... but looks like i'll have to settle with preordering games from Blockbuster.com.

its a shame too... cuz GR has some great preorder incentives in-store.

Please everyone, do try to be reasonable on this. Rape thier deals enough and you guarentee that Gamerush will treat trade ins exactly like Gamestop and EB do. Since I've been benefiting from the more lenient stance of Gamerush for over six months, I'd rather have them stay the way they are.

Wow it took you 24 posts to get to this one? I was wondering when the MP was gonna sound the siren......

you must have been dozing off sweeny.... ;-)

let me sum this quote up for everyone since sweeny is only humanly capable of speaking down to his "peers"....

JSweeny says: "Wow what a great deal... I can't believe Blockbuster/Gamerush is actually legitimately accepting my crap as a promotion and letting me gain all the benefits... I sure hope no one else takes advantage of this offer more-so than I am.... causing them to reconsider the almost too-good-to-be-true aspects of the promo....

Only one thing to do.... tell EVERYONE ELSE to be... "reasonable" and remind them of how bad things could get.... I'm talkin' Gamestop bad.... yeah... that'll scare them and leave more open arms for MY JUNK. HA AHA AHAHAHAHA!!!!!!"

Well, I could have just told you "already been posted" and direct you to post in the MULTIPLE threads that already deal with Gamerush deals and thier results.

I'm sorry, but it's just amazing how utterly selfish you come off as in these last few posts.

Yeah, I have only racked up about $250 in credit. (although I traded a 13 of my old DVD's I had lying around....plus a few game trades) although, I did buy/pre-order a few also.

I would feel like a tool though buying $5 DVD's from my blockbuster then turning right around and trading them in for $8. Do you leave the store first before you do this?

turf respected. no plans on making it out there...

yeah... if i buy a few for 5.... i either wait overnight to come back... or head to a second store (there are many here)

it doesnt yield as much profit as other means... but... its basically free to do... considering all the 5's are bought with credit anyway... then traded back in for more credit (8 bucks).

Yeah, that sounds like a hassle going to each different blockbuster. Then you have to set up an account at each one.....plus drive to each one. I'll just stick to my one and continue my trading there.

Good for you though....

I love the holiday 5 buck giveaway. Buy 50 in gift cards get 5 dollar gift card free. Then with those gift cards buy 50 in video games and get another 5 bucks in gift cards free. Then go to FYE and trade in those mothers for more credit. MU HA HA HA... HA

Or, just buy a Nintendo DS when it comes out with the credit (assuming you have a GameRush and they carry systems) You could easily sell those for around cost and get REAL money for your credit. I will keep my credit though and buy some games over the next few months.

I walked by the BB sign advertising that yesterday, and I knew it was just waiting to be scammed.

Unfortanutely, I've already got too much credit from e-Rewards at BB

:(

Awesome, you can use BB credit at BB.com? I had no idea... my stores never have any good boxsets, but BB.com does...

Is the 5 dollars extra thing supposed to be at ALL blockbusters? A friend of mine just yesterday told me about one store, also in manhattan, that had a flyer for trade 3 get extra $5 each for games. But I have a feeling most blockbusters have never even heard of the promotion and wouldn't know how to do it. They are usually still clueless about games. Ask most and they won't even know that it's BOGO 50% off all of the time. I had an employee emphatically tell me no over the phone until I got there and saw a sign in the store.

I also didn't realize you could use credit at BB.com. Gift cards?

I thought Id post my results, including the things I actually traded in at the Blockbuster on Meridian St. in Bellingham WA.

(After $5.00 additional trade in credit)

PS2- Gadget Racers - $6.50
PS2- Seek And Destroy - $6.50
PS2- Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 - $12.00
PS2- Sky Gunner - $23.00 (bought for $6.00 at a flea market)
PS2- Bombastic - $15.00 ($5.00 at Fred Meyer)

Xbox- Splinter Cell - $10.00
Xbox- Jet Set Radio Future - $6.50 (Free Packin Version)
Xbox- Dead to Rights - $6.50 (Gamestop special, was free)

DVD- Nightmares - $8.00
DVD- AOD Bootleg Edition - $8.00
DVD- Heat Guy J V1 - $8.00
DVD- In the line of Duty 4 - $8.00 (Walmart $5.50)
DVD- Men Seeking Women - $8.00 (Walmart $5.50)(Will Ferral, aweful)
DVD- Bluebeard - $8.00 ($2.00 Suncoast)
DVD- Southpark v1 - $8.00 (Walmart $5.50)
DVD- DRagon Ball GT v1 - $8.00
DVD- Caddyshack 2pack ed. - $8.00 (Walmart $5.50)

Total: - $176.00

As you can see some of the games traded in for only $1.50 before the $5.00 credit, which kinda sucks..

Also, some of my finds were rejected, leaving me with a few crappy movies.

Martain Lawrence- You So Crazy
Sound and Music Volume 1
Eminem "E"
Legend of the Drunken Tiger

lastly.. If you hear 3 beeps when they are scanning the product, that means its rejected..

That sky gunner deal is great. I a close buy EB has them for 7.99 .. plus the new coupon that I got from the car game on the site and the Edge card. I can get all the new releases for a little over 10 bucks a pop. Can anyone confirm that these prices are universal?

Called the closest BB to me to inquire about the extra $5 per game if you trade in...got some ignorant sounding person who said "No.....I don't know nothin' about that." I can't figure out if this is supposed to be at every store, it probably should be, but I don't think it's worth going there to fight with them. I'll probably stop by the store where my friend saw the flyer tomorrow.

Limit is 10... any combinatrion of ten.

The way I got around it was saying that the person I talked to on the phone didnt say anything about there being a limit.

I traded in 5 games today and got an extra $25 in credit. The deal is going on at the 5 BB's near me. I think you should either try calling again or going down to the store and looking at the used games section, the deal is advertised there too.
