Well, after returning the piece of crap ilo mp3 player that says "distrubted by walmart stores" on the back. (also note it was broken when i first opened it)

So, Im still in need of an mp3 player.

I started out looking at the ipods, then Creative's Zen.

Not ragging on the ipod, but saw this

Further I decided to look at a smaller line of players that will be easier to work out with.

The Ipod mini's battery is changable, but u have to take it apart...
With compared to my three other choices, the mini is out of what im looking for.

Im currently looking at"

Iriver H10

Creative Zen Micro

Or wait for the Zen Micro Color?
http://www.creative.com/ces/

As of now Im leaning towards the H10, as it is very similar to the micro (non color) except that it has a color screen, which can support jpgs, and text files. It seems to have a higher learning curve with the controls, but nothing problamatic. Also unable to delete files from within the player.

If the Zen color is the same price as the current model, and is an improvement over the h10, then I guess I will wait.

Any Advice?

I got my Zen Micro about 2 weeks ago and LOVE it. The thing is tiny, and has a replaceable battery with more storage than the Ipod. Here are some pics of mine in a cool little case I made.

Zen Micro with Backlight on

Zen Micro sitting in Altoids case

Case Closed

I cut a hole in the side of it so that I could still plug my headphones in when the case is closed.
Any idea when the micro color will be out/price?
Unfortuately I can't find a street release date...just press releases in Jan saying it should be out early 05.

Looks like its going to be 299 though, and only new feature will be the color screen with photo display and output capablity. It also seems to be able to display album cover pictures with each song. The H10 can not.

H10 Price Shipped 268.00
Micro (Non Color) 219.00
Micro Color 299.00?

I missed out on the Free h10 when 1 year napster subscription...which I believed total 180 :(.

So now, after looking at the txt/display feature at about a 20% increase in price... It looks like it may be Zen Micro non color :p

Funny and innovative idea, I think ill do the same with either player.

Yeah, I was going to order the H10 as well since I wanted to get Napster To Go and then Ebay it, but I was too slow. You can still get $35.00 off any MP3 player if you sign up for a year of Napster To Go. It is a great service, I am i am tempted to try to find how to be able to burn the Napster songs to a CD without paying the $0.99 a song.

I think I read somewhere on this baord that Iriver can be have a program installed in it to play videos!! but it voids your warranty or something...

I want dat zen micro tho! I saw it at Frys it was mad sexy! I would like to actually hold the H10 before I make an opinion about it

This may bring me back to the H10... especiially if the software could be changed back to factory

Anyone have any input on this? I was thinking about getting an ipod shuffle (don't care about no screen and randomness), but if this is true I'll look elsewhere.
Yes, all Ipods do not have a replaceable battery. That is one of the reasons I love my micro. If the battery fails i just spend aboutr $40.00 for a new one instead of $250 for a new player. It is the antI-pod.

Ive have my ipod for almost three years, about a year and a half into its life my friend droped it and the HD got fucked up, I called apple said I didnt know what happened. They sent me a box to ship it in and replaced it for free. Keep in mind this was about a year after the warrenty expired. You just have to get the right customer service rep. I know I kinda scammed em but I felt as if it can break from about a 1 1/2 foot fall on carpet and incased in a sport casing, I shouldnt have to pay.

Try this... Gmini XS200

It fits in the palm of your hand and it has a 20 gb capacity for 200 dollars.

My last two mp3 players have been from archos and I love them. If you have $100 more, I suggest the Gmini 400. It shows pictures and plays video files. I have some Celebrity Jeopardy and Eddie Izzard on mine right now. It is years ahead of the ipod, if only the archos had a scroll wheel then it would totally dominate. Gmini 400

for 300, id buy an iriver h320, plays pictures, and has a 20 gb capacity. Though id go with the zen micro, unless you are a person who losses things a lot

Zen Micro is my personal fave for the flash drive players. Normally I would back the iRiver, but it's too expensive. At that price, you're better off getting the H120.

I Just got my Zen Micro almost a week ago and i love it, its smaller than i thought it would be.

I ordered it from mwave.com and i got the limited edition one with an extra battery so if anything happens to one i got a backup.

http://www.mwave.com/mwave/signupcoupon.asp
Theres a coupon for $10 off
and its only $215 ($205 after coupon) at mwave.

I can recommend anything by Creative Labs.

I own a 30gb Creative Zen. The battery life is great, and the software is very easy to use. Not to mention Creative Labs started in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Which is about 45 min. away from me. Very cool place.

Don't believe the iPod battery story, its crap. I've had an original ipod and the battery is still good, along with an ipod mini and shuffle.

Fact is if your battery does die, the cost to replace the batter is insanely high. That's undeniable...

If you're deadset on a miniplayer, get the H10.

I personally have the I River H340 (40 gig model) and I LOVE IT. It can do just about everything: play music, view pictures, built in radio, built in voice recorder, and PLAY VIDEO! I'm not 100% sure if the H10 will be able to play video, but If its anything like the other Irivers, it should be able to EVENTUALLY (through Firmware upgrades).

So I highly recommend IRiver products, but go with what you think will suit you best.

:(

Well looks like I have another player to choose between.

However, I dont think ill be going with the Micro Photo or the Iriver H10.
The H10 also appears to lack the resources to play video :(.

I have my cell phone to display any pictures that I would want to see at the time. And I can do without the txt feature.

So now its just the Zen Micro at 220 shipped. Or the Archos 400 for an extra 100 shipped.

Guess more reading needs to be done :)

From the looks of it I would go with the Archos 400...I would love to be able to watch video's on the go!

Edit - Think about it this way; would you rather be able to watch movies on the go or have $100 extra dollars?

the newer ipods dont have much of a problem, and you can service the battery yourself for $50, but apple realy doesnt want you to know about it. Also now it costs $100 to replace the battery. Both your choices are great mp3 players though.

As a matter of fact that was just on the news before, it was quick and talked about how apple now chrges $100 to fix them.

Thanks guys, I decided to go with the Creative Micro.

The Carbon and Karma did not have an FM tuner or recorder.

I was very tempted to get the Archos models, especially if the 400 was able to run mame

What held me back was the price difference, in addition I already have a portable dvd player. And to play video with the 400 I would have to encode most of the material that I would want to play.

The comparison to the Archos 200, from reviews and features still favored the Micro for my use.

I actually went to BB and CC today to physically look at all the players. If only the Archos Gmini400 was cheaper :(.

Thanks again for all the information, Im glad I got to look at my options before purchasing another junk mp3 player.

And thanks for the cheap link for the Micro player ;)

Well, thanks for at least checking it out. Most people that I recommend it to are like, "it's not made by apple or creative labs? BLASPEHMY!!!" But yea, I really love it, but I hope you're happy with the creative micro!

Didn't know that the Gmini 400 was as small as it is. If I wasn't looking for a 40gb player now, I would definitely jump on the 400. I've had my Archos Jukebox 20 for a couple years now and have never had a single problem with it, and it works exactly how I wan't it to.

Haha, my last one was the archos recorder 15gb.
