My first (potentially) bad transaction on eBay

Well, it was bound to happen I guess. I've been a member since 2003 and I have a perfect feedback rating of over 100. I sold an item on Sunday, February 8, (Prince of Persia for 360) and I get this message today from the buyer:
There is still no validated tracking info for the number provided. It has almost been a week now and you still can not provide shipping info. This is not okay. I want a refund.
I mailed out his game on Wednesday which is only the third possible day after the auction ended. If it didn't arrive today then it will probably get there tomorrow. I also provided him with a DC# immediately after shipping. Is it me or is this guy crazy? I don't really know how to respond other than to tell him to be patient but I'm afraid he's going to leave me a negative for no freaking reason at all. I've waited weeks for things in the past and I'm just happy it show up at all. Jesus Christ.

Even if he filed a claim you should okay as it shouldnt take that long to deliver a game. You might get a neg but try not to worry about it.

This was the message I sent him on Wednesday:

Hey - the DC# is XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX

It should have gone out today (I dropped it off in the mail room at my office) but give it a day or two I guess to get in the USPS system.

Thanks.

Chock it up to impatient buyers. You may get a negative and you'll really have no recourse. I'd send them a response just reminding them the game shipped on Wednesday via 1st class mail which takes 3 to 5 days to be delivered and let him/her know that the delivery window is between Saturday and next Wednesday (due to the holiday on Monday).

I just don't get it. He sent me an angry message less than 5 days after the auction ended. I can't control when the USPS puts their info into the system. Is this guy like 14 years old or something?

Give it 24 hours before responding. Hopefully it shows up in those 24 hours and the person will get over it. If it doesn't show up tomorrow, respond saying that you will contact the USPS and look into what's going on. Give it another day, contact him again saying that the USPS just forgot to scan and they will update the system at the next shipping center. Just do everything in 24 hours steps to drag it out until the item actual arrives there and then things will blow over. And if he asks for a refund, make him go through the trouble of going through a paypal complaint so that they are forced to do all the work... most buyers don't want to go through the effort as long as they actually got what they paid for.

Thanks for the advice. I typed in a bunch of other tracking numbers for things I sold and mailed on the same day and a few of them were showing up. I think they update their system every night around 7pm so hopefully it will be there in a few hours and then I can let him know. He's probably having regrets about paying so much for the game ($31 shipped) and trying to get out of it or something.

If he's being a dick it really doesn't matter what you do. He can leave you a care free negative and you get to smile and take it. It doesn't matter if he got the game or he's an impatient twat.

yeah, I love eBay's new policy of no feedback for the buyer.

P.S. twat is an awesome word.

I always list my own delivery times in my listing. I say "it'll take me about 3 days to ship the package" and "delivery usually takes 5-7 days though it can take longer". If the buyer doesn't like than and emails me about it after paying for the item, I can say the info is in fucking auction retard.

If he leave a neg, big deal man. No body seems to care about feedback these days anyway. PayPal should side with you with his dispute as long as you shipped it using the method you said you would and the DC# shows as the item being delivered.

I'm picturing a grubby little man-child waiting impatiently to get his fingers on a game he can't wait to play. Jeez...some people don't understand the meaning of BUSINESS DAYS. And the tracking numbers are pretty worthless for USPS labels. I've had some say in transit even after I've received the package.

Good luck mang.

People are stupid, pass the beernuts. There are a lot of people who are trying to "game the system" on Ebay anymore. It's all playing into Ebay's desire to move away from individual sellers, and toward storefronts.

Well, now it looks like I can respond. I just checked the USPS site and the package was in there. I'm sending the buyer this:

Hi. I just got your message - I'm not sure what you mean since I just checked the USPS tracking number site (http://www.usps.com/shipping/trackandconfirm.htm) and it says:

Label/Receipt Number: 0308 XXXX 0000 1759 XXXX
Status: Processed

Your item was processed and left our NEW YORK, NY 10199 facility on February 13, 2009. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.

I hope this clears things up. Thanks.

Hopefully this will straighten things out. Jeez.

yea. it takes me long to get stuff i buy off ebay sometime. Most people are lazy with shipping, then choose the cheapest (and slowest) method.

I kinda had what whats happening to this buyer though happen to me... I bought a ps2 game, and the guy notified me with a delivery confirmation. But like 2 weeks later,i still havent gotten the game, and the tracking status from the number he gave me was the same as well. I tried to contact him, but after no response in a week, i finally went through paypal for a chargeback. I won the case, and got my money back by about the 4th week with no game. Wouldnt you know the 5th week, my game comes in the mail, with a note on it from the USPS. Sorry, this package was severely damaged in handling. We apolgize for this and for the long time it took you to recieve. We are sorry for any inconvenience this damage may cause.

It was pretty beat up, the case had a gash in it, and it was dusty as hell. Point is this.

USPS fuckED UP. maybe thats what happened here?

Possibly, but doubtful. The OP shipped on Wednesday. Depending on where the package was going, it could be until next Tuesday before the buyer gets it, per USPS standards (3 - 5 business days).

Well, I got a positive feedback from the guy today with no further communication. The long weekend really slowed things down. I returned the feedback but I was tempted to say something like "impatient buyer" or something but I just added him to my blocked bidder list and moved on. IMO, a successful transaction for a seller is getting a positive feedback - no matter how you get there or what goes on in between. A successful transaction for a buyer is just getting the item as described - no matter how long it takes (within reason like 2-3 weeks).

Whew!
