My girlfriend and EB

My girlfriend recently went into an EB at a mall in Charlotte this week. She's a video game fanatic like everyone around here she plays all kinds of games, mostly Amped 2 and fighters, anyways she went into the store and asked if they had a copy of Marvel Vs Capcom 2. They laughed and said something like "you don't know much about v-games do you". She knew the game was hard to find going into it (I have a copy, but since we don't live near each other for the time being she wanted to find one) but she was curious, and i guess curiosity to game geek store tools is something that you can't have. I guess they were asking like "are you getting it for your boyfriend?" i mean.. do all people assume because its a girl going into a store asking for a game that it automatically assumes its for a boyfriend/husband? I find that a little offensive (not just because it was my girlfriend) but i think it was an insult to all female gamers. Then I guess they had Halo 2 running and she didn't beat the guy but came close and i guess that shut them up.. but anyways She picked up a copy of Midway arcade treasures (the first one) for 5 bucks and a copy of Burnout 3 for 5 bucks (granted it wasn't complete just disc only but still.. )

thoughts? (did i hit the right forum?)

4 things.
most girls dont play video games, its a valid question.
is this "girlfriend" you speak of real?
shut up.
who cares.

I've never had anyone at any gamestore assume that I wanted the games for me, they always figure it's for my husband and while he is a gamer I am much more hardcore than he is. Now the guys at EB know me for the most part so it doesn't happen any more, but at Game Stop where they have new employees it seems every few weeks they still act like I don't know my ass from a hole in the ground... generally other females look down on me for gaming, but what can i say i was four when we got the NES not long after it's release, if you grow up w/ the games your more likley to be addicted :)

I can empathize -

My girlfried (who's a decently avid gamer) refuses to step foot in an eb near me (Southside Richmond) because the guys that work there are such machismo dickheads.

They've made similar remarks to her before and she's gotten really pissed off. However, when you consider the education level and skill requirements for even district manager at eb (no offense to those of you in the retail industry, but face it), it's only natural that the quality of employees is of such consistently terrible quality.

On a side note, I also hate the raging-ness of G4, which has a similar ring to it from our experiences at EB. Anyone know what I mean?

They probably would have had the same attitude no matter who was looking for the game, but yeah, it can be pretty insulting. How did she get Burnout 3 for $5?

you cared enough to reply...

yeah.. but i mean you don't insult a potential customer like that, i've worked retail like that before and i never asked questions like that i usually say "what are you looking for" and then if they said something like "i'm looking for someting for my boyfriend" then i'd say "well what does your boyfriend like".. i mean you never try to assume what the prospective customer is in your store for.

the guy didn't want to box it up (as i guess it was just traded in before she came up to pay)and rang it up for her for five bucks.

lol ditto. way to go nick.

Sexism in any degree sucks. Those store clerks sound like pricks. I can't stand the idiot jackass clerks at my EB, and there's only a couple that I like at Gamestop.
Burnout 3 for 5 bucks, disc only at an EB?

I'm totally calling bullshit.
I second that notion!

If i were a girl, or if i walked into a game store with sexist females, i'd put up with a little heckling for a $5 Burnout 3.
Sounds like they may have been a little rude, but it doesn't sound like they were seriously mean.

A gamer girl is a fairly rare thing....and if what do you do if you have something rare? PUT IT ON EBAY!

I agree. Seriously, belittling someone because they're a women is ridiculous. Maybe a call to EB could get you a gift certificate or something, as well as the manager being spoken to.

Though I don't see what's odd about looking for MvC2, I see it all over the place in the boston area. Not hard to find at all, pricey, but not hard to find.

edit: Rig, I think he was being sarcastic

it really wasn't that big of a deal.. she just dished it back. but if i was a female going into any "guy" store and was just treated like i'm only there because of a "boy" then thats just silly but then again.. >HS level jobs expect as much.. she's very real.. but don't believe me if you want.

I'm a sports gamer... and a couple times I've been asked if games are for my boyfriend. That doesn't really bother me... they're probably trying to be nice, or something.

And once some loser kept poking fun at me that I didn't understand sports games... sarcastically going on about simplistic rules in football. But, that kid was a general idiot who also insulted me numerous times for buying Dreamcast games, and not paying $50 for every PS2 game in the store.

Remember that you're dealing with someone working at EB. They're making peanuts, and are worse off than you.

No offense to the fine EB/Gamestop employees at this board.

I dont see how I am worse off than anybody else? My peanuts do me just fine.

If u ever have gone into a gamestore with a hot chick, all the workers and customers will stop what they are doing, its quite amusing. Its as if they have never seen a good looking girl before.
I dont see how I am worse off than anybody else? My peanuts do me just fine.
I took the peanuts remark just in a really bad way..

2. EB sucks and she should probably have taken action; sort of like doing some MvC maneuvers on their magazine rack

1. sports games suck

I never see the workers doing anything anyway.

Most of the time they're playing some game, or talking on the phone.
Those kind of remarks are just plain ignorant. Shut the fuck up.
I wouldn't even worry about that clown Rig, he has 26 posts since 2003 and none really contributed anything of worth to this site. I have the ignore list in full effect.

I notice most of the people who make stupid comments never post anything of benefit to the site. It's stupid stuff like that that makes women feel like they don't belong here.

I vote that we get Lina and jm2u together.:D

And I agree with alonzo. I see tons of MvC2. And they all sell for $54.99 plus tax, used and incomplete and thrashed. But still, the game exists.

Someone call the ACLU, some EB fanboys are insulting the honor of female video-game players everywhere!!1! :bouncy:

At the very least, you'll get a G4 half-hour show devoted to the incident, complete with cringe-inducing Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb reenactment.

that made my day...

hahahaha. that is seriously one of the funniest things ive ever heard.

anyway, who cares how eb employees treats women. if it doesnt effect you directly, then dont worry about those knuckleheads behind the counter.

If your gf thinks her one day shopping spree for MvsC was rough, man, don't let her work in a game store ^^;

I know I certainly don't speak for everyone, but *my* staff at *my* store, is currenty 50-50...half the staff are female, half are male. (coincedently, half would be considered black, and half would be considered white). This clearly isn't the case everywhere, I just happened to be promoted to a store who's manager appreciates the benefit of a diverse staff as much as I do.

Anyway, I deal with that crap all day, lol.

"So...Do you play games?"

I think I get asked that question about...OOOHhhhh....TWELVE TIMES A WEEK.

Yeah. at least some variant of it once a day sounds about right. My regulars know better, and tend to laugh at other people when they hear them ask me. Some of my old coworkers feign 'ducking' in anticipation of the day where I just snap and throw something.

Other then that, it's okay, I figure I might as well enjoy it while the novelty of it still exists. Also, I get the grateful faces of moms/wives/fiances/girlfriends when they see me and realize they don't have to deal with that "stereotype" of the overweight pimply thirty-year-old-lives-with-mom sales clerk who would laugh in their face and pull the "holier then thou" you know nothing thing...

sideeffect: i have to work with some of those stereotypical guys.

OH! and not to mention the jealous girlfriends!! omg, you talk smack about a game or do your job to talk up a reserve and sometimes you get these girls that just..*freak out*...they start pulling on the guys arm and dragging them out before their finished paying....I can't tell you how awkward it is trying to ring someone up while their girlfriend is biting their ear and humping their leg just to mark their territory or something freaky like that.

*sigh*
OP~ just let her know you appreciate the crap she may have to put up with sharing a hobby that you don't have to deal with cause you're a guy, she's not the first and if I have anything to do with it (and i have nieces, so you know damn well I will) she won't be the last either ;)

~

P.S. Lina your avvie keeps getting prettier and prettier, I like that one. ^_^
If only shopping could go 100% online, we would'nt have all these problems.... :)
aren't there clinically defined terms for people who shop exclusively through their fridge and computer and never leave the house? lol...

Dayom.... it amazes me how some places like EB hire the lowest scum of the earth, and actually tries to pass them off as "knowledgeable friendly sales people." Amazing indeed.

urzishra14, your g/f should of complained to a manager right then and there. That's no way a customer should be treated. Hell, I'd still would have her call and complain. Might not do much, but its better than not doing anything at all.

Sexist game dealers suck... I usually only have to deal with it at the flea market... but there I play it up to get better prices ;)

I'm very lucky to have some damn nice game store employees in my area... actually, the best are at an Eb that just opened outside one of the malls a few months ago. I went for the GC deal a few days ago... not only did they give me the deal before the ad offically started, they went out of their way to dig around for the last copy of Crystal Chronicles in the store so I could get the deal, helped me find the PC titles eligible for the deal, and even doubled-checked to see if the Metroid bundled system would apply to the deal. (It didn't tho'. :whistle2:( ) Very nice guys.

Well, as soon as Corporate finds out that this new store has decent people working there, they'll fire them all and fix the problem.

(jk, katt. ;) )

Azel, district managers don't require much education, but the district manager in my area is a graduate of Northwestern University...they get paid like 95k per year. It's not too bad of a job.

It's a lot of fun working at EB. This one time, I had a customer call on a phone asking about a game and after I told him all I knew about it (from playing it), he was like "Now can I get a GUY on the phone who actually PLAYS GAMES?" I also get a lot of guys who come in who are like "why are you working here? you don't play games!" or when I tell them about games, they assume it's because I heard about it from one of my coworkers. Occassionally, I get the "I bet you suck because you're a girl" people; back when we were allowed to play during our breaks, I enjoyed using that time period to kick some people's butt, lol.

One time, a lady came in with her son and started going off on how gaming was such a "guy thing" and that no "DECENT girl" would ever play games. I was like "well, some girls do play certain games..." because I didn't want to be rude but didn't enjoy being insulted either. She picked up a Halo 2 strategy guide we had by the counter and was like "well, all I know is that any GIRL who plays THIS should be shot!" That was the day after I pulled an all-nighter playing Halo 2 on XBOX Live.

sokay by me, DuelladyS was speaking of some random competition..
heh, j/k.

anyway, some of my favorite moments (in complete sarcasm) include:

people walking into the store and blurting out, "Are You the Only One Here??" or "You're all Alone??"....yes, my friend, that's why I get paid so well, to help your sexist ass purchase a game that I probably know more about then you ever will.

When someone on the phone says 'I want to speak to a manager', and I go. "Okay."....moments of silence go by, "Go ahead...?"
"Oh! You're?..Oh...Okay...um.."

and last but not least, the occasional female non-gamer who will come in and express her exasperation at her boyfriend/husband/whatever for liking video games, which clearly she doesn't approve of, and, "like, oh my god, you must get so sick of it, it's just stupid, $50 for a game?? Ugh, and he never spends that much on me for My Birthday. God I hate guys and video games, don't you?!"...

^^;

YES! You've got to love the parents who come in and say, "I'm looking for a game for a little girl to play"...or even better, "my wife"

and i'm thinking...okay, wtf?

you run out of barbie and nickolodean games after like thirty seconds, and aside from telling them to paint the damn case pink if it makes them feel better, it's impossible to get some people to understand that there really isn't a game that a girl "Can't" play.

lol, if I were you I totally woudlnt' have been able to resist fake-shooting myself and falling on the floor....

I was thinking the same thing. An EB near me (and about as far from Boston as you can get and be in the Northern continental US) has had a copy sitting on the shelf (fairly beat up looking case - never bothered to check the disc) for $54.99. Needless to say it has been there for quite a while. So it is a perfectly valid question to ask the employees, be you male or female! :) I found it new about a month ago (at regional department/grocery store Fred Meyer).
