Good luck with that, as a population we want things as quick as possible and as cutting edge as possible. Want a TV or machine that will last? Then make it simple (look at the old tube TVs and Atari 2600s). Again, extended warranty. As a consumer, you can either take the warranty that is given, get an extended warranty, or not make the purchase. For me personally, I feel very confident that my PS3 will last me many years; and since I have a 60GB model I'll GLADLY pay the $150 not to have another device (PS2) attached to my TV.
I didn't want the damn thing to be 'cutting edge', I wanted a

in' gaming machine. Mind you, I have used some of the other functions of the PS3, but I doubt I'll ever use them enough for them to be worthwhile.
I'll NEVER use it as a movie player, I'll never use it as a CD player(even though it functions as a PS1 which played CD's), I'll never use it as my MAIN internet browsing machine and so on.
This is why I wish Sony would make a stripped down version for $199-299, though $300 is even too much for my liking. It was a struggle to wrest the money from my hands the day I bought mine.
I had resolved after having video issues with my PS2 last gen that I paid $299 for to NEVER buy a console for more than $150-200 again. But there were games I wanted to play, so I guess I'm stupid and went back on my own word with buying this thing.
Do I regret it? A bit at times, but as long as my PS3 remains as reliable as I've seen the bulk of them being, I'll keep it.
