My sad ps3 Christmas Story/Warning

I would've posted this awhile back, but that just wasn't possible:

My mom decided to get my youngest brother (14) a ps3 for Christmas. She was very excited about this, as this was probably the biggest Christmas gift either I or my two brothers had ever received. Mind you the gift was specifically for the youngest, and my mom was worried that this would cause my other brother (21) or me (24) to be jealous. I assured her it would not as both of us make a good salary working and could buy a ps3 if we wanted to, heck my brother just bought a house! She wouldn't listen to me and on Christmas morning insisted that my brother open the ps3 first, before my other brother arrived, tragedy and hilarity ensue...

My brother gets the large box, comments on how heavy it is, and absolutely has no idea what he is getting. He may have expected a Wii, but definitely not a ps3. He pulled back the wrapping paper and was just stunned. He gleefully hugged the box like a toddler would a teddy bear, and sat there in a state of elation and pleasant surprise. That would not be the end of his surprise, unfortunately the story goes downhill from here.

I can remember getting the Nintendo, The Super Nintendo, The Nintendo 64, and the Playstation for Christmas during various years, with the exception of the Nintendo 64, I don't remember ever immediately pulling the system out of the box to check it out. Well, my mom wanted him to open the box right away for some reason, and here's where the story gets interesting.

He opened the box carefully, as we all watched in anticipation of the ps3. I later got a pocket camcorder, an absolute shame that I didn't get to open that first so I could film this all. Anyhow, he opened up the first box, and pulled out a slim ps2 box. My heart sank as I immediately realized something was dreadfully wrong. I glanced over at my mom who still seemed exhilerated and filled with anticipation for the big unboxing, maybe she saw Cheapy's video on youtube. I, on the other hand, knew that this wasn't right, because my mom had specifically forbidden me from altering the contents of the box as a good joke. I wanted to wake up a few minutes prior to my brother and replace the ps3 with the cat, figuring that'd be really funny. Anyhow, I knew something was wrong, as a slim ps2 box has no place in a ps3 box and my mom had no desire to play a practical joke that morning, yet for some reason I was the only one who had already figured out what was going on.

The rest of the "box opening" was almost surreal, I already knew there was going to be no ps3 that morning, and as my brother opened the slim ps2 box, he found yet another box. I finally said something, and everyone else got on the same page as me realizing that something was definitely not right. The second interior box was a blank USPS shipping box, and inside it was a weight carefully wrapped in a cloth. The ps3 had been stolen.

The thief was kind enough to leave behind Talladega Nights though, pretty much a slap in the face. The morning was pretty much ruined for my mom, as she was extremely hurt and heart-broken over the whole ordeal. She refrained from breaking down, and my little brother laughed off the whole ordeal. I'm not sure if he genuinely saw humor in such an unfortunate event, or if he just tried to react positively to keep my mom from losing it.

The theme for the rest of the day was certainly a fairly somber one for my mom and brother, as they were the ones that were truly hurt by this event. I wasn't hurt, but was definitely disturbed to know that an individual could be so sick, and villianous to swap a ps3 out of the box and put in a weight, knowing that the item he returned to the store would likely end up under some kid's Christmas tree. I was also very disturbed because the ps3 was purchased from the Target that my college roommate of 2 years is a manager (ETL) at. I would like to know how anyone on Target's staff could have been so careless as to let someone return a ps3 and not check the contents of the box before accepting the return. I know there are untrained seasonal employees at Target this time of year, but such blatent disregard for an item that is such a hot commodity at the moment, seems unfathomable to me.

Well, the next day my mom contacted Target over the phone and spoke with a few managers, and they apologized and agreed to give her a ps3 as soon as they got them in stock. Additionally, Target refunded her 20% of the $600 purchase price, $120 for those who hate math. Target's corporate office was less willing to make ammends though, as they only offered a $20 gift card, which my mom declined to accept, feeling that was more of an insult on Target HQ's behalf.

The whole ordeal prompted me to do some research about this matter. While I didn't find any ps3 stories, I did find several other stories about people who had purchased items only to find that they weren't in the box. The practice is far more common than I had imagined, and most stores simply don't acknowledge this is going on. In some cases the items were replaced with weights, in others with objects of equal weight, and in some cases with older models of the same object. After reading those stories, I was very thankful that my mom didn't buy the ps3 from Best Buy. I'm sure this will come as a surprise to no one, but Best Buy generally won't take the customer's side, and will treat them like criminals instead of the victims that they are.

So, the lesson to be learned from all of this is: Buyer beware! You would do well to check the contents of the box of any expensive item you purchase before you leave the store. I know if I ever find a Wii in stock, I'll be opening that box right up to make sure that everything is there before I pay for it.

shitty. at my store weve had problems like this before, but only with games being replaced by music cds or other things to add weight, and then resealed. after this happened at a couple of stores we had to make it mandatory to open all returns, even if they are sealed, which is really frustrating because its only a couple of people doing it, and now we have to scrutinize all returns, even from old ladies.

Why is it things like this never happen to people like....the N64 kid?

Hilarity would ensue.

Glad to hear Target took care of you, though. Class act on their part, especially when everyone else would probably just laugh at you and escort you out of their establishment.

When my mom called Target the manager she actually spoke to was my friend from college, who of course did not recognize her voice. I talked to his girlfriend later that day, and she told me about the story and that they didn't believe it, and then I told her it was my mom who called, and all doubt vanished. I think Target would've replaced the ps3 anyway though, as they didn't want the story to go to the news and generate bad PR for them.

Most of the family has managed to find humor in the situation, mainly since my little brother just shrugged it off. Not that anyone doesn't think that the person who stole the ps3 is a very sick individual, but a few songs have been written, and many jokes have been made. I'm sure my dad will do something as a joke on Groundhog Day, which is when he celebrates Christmas.

When I asked my brother why he wasn't upset that he didn't get his ps3 Christmas morning and why he didn't shed a tear for us, he just told me that it didn't matter to him because there weren't any games to play on it yet anyway. I got him Dragon Quest VIII, La Pucelle & X-Men Legends II, so he should have plenty of games to play until the ps3 does get a must-have title.

Yeah, at least Target rectified the situation arguably the best they could at the time. And also your brother wasn't crushed-- terrible for your mom to buy such a great present and find that it wasn't there after all. She must of felt terrible...

A good trio of games. Definitely will keep him entertained for quite a while.

I'm not sure about the whole "till the ps3 gets a must-have title", though. You may need to buy him a few more games before that happens. ;)

In the defense of Target employee's, they can't just open a new item to check the contents inside. Some people know of devious ways to open the security seals on items and tamper with it. The people working at Target aren't detectives, as you said, so it's not really their fault.

Also, I found this line to be funny as hell...

After reading those stories, I was very thankful that my mom didn't buy the ps3 from Best Buy. I'm sure this will come as a surprise to no one, but Best Buy generally won't take the customer's side, and will treat them like criminals instead of the victims that they are.

Surprise? Buddy, we all know Best Buy would send us all to jail if they could. I owned them twice though... they're not gonna make a bitch out of me.

That's odd. Wasn't there a serial code to scan or something? Target usually has that done with all big electronic purchases. At least your family took it in stride and weren't too upset about it and laugh it off.

It depends who's working Guest Services really. Sometimes you'll get the ass who checks everything like you're a criminal, sometimes you'll get the extremely trustworthy old lady. Looks like this Target had the old lady.

I remember reading someone who had gone to pick up a PSP at Wal-Mart I think. The guy working there said "hey here is one still in the plastic" and picked up the only one sealed but... They don't come in plastic.

When he got home, he opened the box, and it had something like a steel pipe and some wooden eggs in it! If I remember correctly they let him exchange after some hassling.

Really glad that story had a happy ending. Made me a little sick reading it at first, because I thought your mom had gotten screwed via Ebay... Props to your Mom, props to your brother, and props to Tar-jay for giving you the new PS3/a nice discount.

If i remember correctly, in the past certain game consoles would leave their SN exposed to be scanned by the store. This should become common practice anymore with all of the thefts and such. Not sure if the benefit outweighs the cost to incorporate something like this, but it would stop a lot of this sort of thing from happening.

Zenethian, you are a very good writer. Reading your post was like reading a good short story. My smiles quickly turned into sadness lol.

If it were me, I'd probably have Target check the serial number of the PS3 to see if the person paid for it via credit card. If they have the guy's personal info, they can nail him.

Well if the return people did their jobs they should be able to figure out who returned this. The serial is tracked after all.

Yeah I returned my 360 I got for Christmas from my wife (purchased at target) so that I could buy one at BB for the free game and gift card. We sat around for like 10 minutes waiting for someone to verify it which was still sealed because I knew I could get a better deal than full retail. I'm glad they did some sort of check it seems that stores would have some sort of way to verify the system is in the box.

No one should accept a PS3 return at Christmas time... that just doesn't make sense.

Replacing the PS3 with a cat, probably would have been hilarious. A shame what happened, but Target seems to be taking the right approach.

this is why you open up items to make sure they are in there. Your lucky target belived you. Few years back i got a game off best buy and opened it for xmas and there wasn nothing in there. Took it back the next day and they said there was no way to proove i didnt take the game out and trying to return an empty box.

This year my cousins kids got some gba games and they were able to open up the boxes just enough to get the games out but keep the plastic mostly sealed. If you didnt know what you was looking for you would think the games were brand new sealed. Boy did they get their asses hit for that (dont know if they were planning on returning empty boxes or what). My cousin then ripped all the plastic off the boxes and put a little tear in the cardboard box to make sure they cant take them back.

i cant belive xmas is 10 days gone, it just seems like it was yesterday : (

You were never the best at counting, were you? Including today, it's 9 days.

I had similar experience few years back at best buy. I bought Shenmue for DC and after I checked at home, it only come with one disc and the dic was the second disc. I brought it back the same day to the store and good thing I didn't need to argue with them.

The ol' "brick in the box reutrn", a common thief technique that unfortunately still dupes some employees. Fraudulent like this and others run rampant and are pretty common place both just before and just after christmas.

Ironically your story is about the PS3 though. I actually had to go up to the front and instruct all the news Customer Service people at our store how to properly check PS3s for returns because we had to fraudlent returns just after xmas this year and nobody even noticed til they gave them to me to put out on the floor to sell again. Luckily niether was a "brick in the box", but they had been fraudulently resealed and returned as new, only one was very dusty while the other was missing the TN freebie disc and the compisite cables. Needless to say I informed them that we couldn't sell either as new and went through how to properly check. As for the serial numbers thing, IIRC they are just a sticker on the outside for the PS3 and PSP, not a window to the actual system like on the PS2 or 360. Unfortunately that makes fraudulent returns and especially the "birck in the box" trick that much easier to pull off.

reminded me of when i got a new PSOne and it turn out to be a returned system missing some of the accessories. Good thing i got the system a week before FFVII came out, and I was able to get it exchanged. I would be really upset if I got FFVII but not able to play it.

we celerbrate christmas on xmas eve so that is why i said 10 days

hell I couldve jacked tons of people with my craigslist transactions. NONE of the checked the contents before leaving. It wouldve been easy for me to stick a brick in there and walk off with 900-1200 bucks and a ps3

It's good that target decided to give you another one. I guess they didn't check the internals on the return because the person probably resealed it real well (Sony should have done a better job sealing the ps3) and they didn't want to have it as an open box item to sell as a discount.

Happened to me at Walmart with a Video Card. I tried to return it but they said they wouldn't take it back, So I told them exactly what I was going to do, go to electronics put their bull shit empty box on the shelf and walk out with a new one. They said they would call the cops but I left before they could do anything. I got my shit.

If I ever found someone stealing a PS3 like that, especially at christmas and especially to a friend or family member, I would smash their face open with a lead pipe and sell his or her body to necrophiliacs.

You realize that by doing that and putting it back on the shelf, you possibly just burned someone else the in nearly same way you got burned.

If I told the Walmart manager what I was going to do and they watched me and didn't remove the box after I threw it on the shelf then that's their problem.

I had a similar situation happen at a CompUSA. I bought what I thought was a factory-sealed copy of Tribes for the PC... but when I got home the box contained instructions for a Weider Home gym from the 1960's and an empty jewel case.

Needless to say I called them about it right away. I guess the employees were able to "try" the game or something? The package was sealed in shrinkwrap... so I had no idea it would otherwise have been tampered with... Funny thing was, there was one on the shelf without the shrinkwrap that had clearly been opened by someone... odd. ;)

I know most will say, "He traded a paper weight for another paper weight"

But I feel so bad for your mom. That was a sad story. I hope she gets a new console in return!

Ugh, if your going to steal. Dont leave behind a box to be purchased by another.

I've said it once I'll say it again, it happens all the time. The people that do the returns at the store don't care they aren't going thru the trouble of opening every box and checking the contents. My bet is somebody threw a brick with a newspaper in the box carried back to target and got a free 600 dollar ps3. I've seen this happen endless times at walmart with televisions where the returns ppl didn't want to pick up or even touch a large television. Consider yourself lucky thou that Target bought your story, it would be really easy for them to disbelieve that story.

This kinda shocked me too because up until now I was sure that Target (and other retailers) check serial codes. Or at least they did when I had to bring back my busted DS Lite (one broken speaker out of the box). I'm glad everything worked out for your family. I wonder if they can catch the guy using those forms that people fill out when they return stuff.

It just comes down to lazy customer service reps who take returns all day and decide to not do there job on all of them. i.e verify the contents of the box.

Best buys use to get lots of "bricks in the box" returns even after several meetings about checking box contents.... Its just lazy employees.
But also i wouldnt count out employees who are working returns have there friends come in and do these scam returns as well.

Im wondering what would happen if/when an employee discovers bricks instead of a ps2/ps3 at the counter before the return is complete.
i guess they just say nice try and let the criminal walk out of the store?

You essentially have to, you can't detain anyone over it, actually due to lack of proof I'd imagine the store has no legal recourse other than outright refusing the return and probably banning that person from shopping there. You even have to give them the box and the weights back as it's technically their property.

Smashing someone in the face with a lead pipe is NOT okay.

Actually that's felonious assualt with a deadly weapon but you can call it whatever you want dude.

Update: Apparently Target just doesn't care enough to attempt to catch the guy (or girl). Their policy is to simply replace the item and move on. So, you can expect this sort of thing to continue happening until these stores admit to what is going on and take preventative measures against it's continuation.

I doubt here's not much they can do to catch them though. Even if somebody was dumb enough to give out real info and pay with a credit card, then return it, (if that's even what hapened) the item has changed hands so much it would be next to impossible to find any real evidence of when and how the actual theft took place, which you'd need to actually prove anything. I doubt even the police would investigate too much into it because they'd probably hit the same wall. It's a really crappy situaiton, but just because they don't investigate into your incident doesn't mean that store won't implement somehting to help prevent it from happening again.
